As many funds are being raised by the electronic music scene for military and refugee support, which of course are vital, we also are thinking about a vulnerable group that is often forgotten, animals in shelters.

The artist formerly known as Lady Blacktronika is on a new mission as Femanyst, set to drop an EP of ruthless techno on Paula Temple’s label, Noise Manifesto on May 25. Femanyst, a darker and more aggressive direction, is the newest iteration of Miss Akua Grant’s unrelenting musical imagination. With her newly debuted moniker, she has traded in the lush deep house sounds that kick started her career as a producer for a dive into the deep end of captivating techno, acid and hardcore. Grant grew up in California, seeking out the electronic, house and disco sounds that elevated her creativity out of the hardships of her early life. Music production initially served Grant as a much needed catharsis, but in the last few years has garnered her acclaim as tenaciously inventive head for grooves and beats, and has lead her to be selected by Paula Temple for her curated program at Lyon’s Nuits Sonores this May 12th. Her forthcoming release for Noise Manifesto is tribute some of her musical first-loves, namely “90s rave weirdness.”

The four track EP is a churning, machine-driven tour de force. Femanyst’s intensely metallic and concrete sound palate reaches nearly boiling temperatures under ferocious drum machine patterns. “Bat Shit” sets up a perfect nightmare flashback to the warehouse raves you were always too afraid to go to, and then mauls the listener with a sound that can only be described as massive. Much of Femanyst’s sublime appeal derives from the effect of one’s remembering to breath as breakneck snare triplets and razor sharp hi-hats give way to subtly embedded grooves. With innate cool, Femanyst subverts the EP’s dominant hard-edged rigidity with the head-bobbing funk prowess of Lady Blacktronika.  In carving out new corners of what techno is capable of, Femanyst joins Noise Manifesto’s young and promising tradition.

Returning to Paula Temple’s Noise Manifesto is the Danish composer, performer and sound artist SØS Gunver Ryberg. She appeared on the second chapter of the Noise Manifesto Decon/Recon series together with Aïsha Devi, Rrose, and Paula Temple herself.

She now delivers ‘SOLFALD’ her own solo EP for the label including six original tracks, some of which have evolved from her captivating live performances. The opening track, ‘Kredsløb,’ was created from sounds of the electromagnetic fields in the Opera House of Copenhagen, while ‘Another State_Eurydike’ and ‘Dead Space_Eurydike’ are from the AR art installation/music theater/real life game production ‘Eurydike’ by director Evelyn Hribersek and was nominated at Deutches Computerspielpreis 2018.

SØS Gunver Ryberg creates genre-defying electronic music, sound installations and stage performances. Her characteristic style is recognized for challenging your state of consciousness by transformative music experiences with insistent rhythms, combined with a meticulous exploration of textures and timbres. Raw sounds created from synthesis and processed field recordings are framed by symphonic forms and create a unique expressivity.

Since appearing on Objekt’s Boiler Room in 2014, she’s become known for delivering music of uncompromising intensity. Touring all over the world to perform at festivals, clubs, museums, galleries, cinemas and churches to more unconventional contexts like an underwater reservoir, a running metro train, a planetarium or an old industrial ship allows SØS to expand on her abstract interpretations of the relationship between rhythm and space, with the bodies inside being fortunate enough to experience this transformative physical power of her sound.

Recent highlights for SØS Gunver Ryberg have include appearances at Berghain, Tresor, Nuit Sonores, Atonal, Roskilde Festival, CTM Festival, Flow Festival, Corsica Sudios, Rewire Festival, EKKO Festival, TodaysArt.

She has been awarded several times for her music, significantly a BAFTA nomination for her work on the multi award winning video game INSIDE. Lately she created the immersive quadrophonic installation ‘WHITE SUN’ 2018 and composed all music and sound textures for the Danish film ‘Cutterhead’ by director Rasmus Kloster Bro coming in the autumn of 2018.
