'We Know How To Boogie' is a joyful romp through the finest forgotten dance-floor disco and soul from the 70's and 80's. Compiled by Italian brothers Gino and Federico Grasso. Bona fide 'disco dons', collecting music for over 30 years and supplying the likes Dimitri From Paris, Sadar Bahar and Volcov with obscure gems. Gino is a familiar face behind the decks in his hometown of Bologna and across Italy, while Federico's DJing outings are more occasional. Music, passion and knowledge has seen Gino play underground clubs the world over, including Le Souk in NYC and the Bussey Building and Brilliant Corners in London. Many of the tracks included on 'We Know How To Boogie' have become 'signature tunes' for DJs such as Phil Asher, Sadar Bahar, Joe Davis, Ltj X- perience and Daniele Baldelli, rarely if ever leaving their record boxes. Containing several exclusive edits from G&D, 'We Know How To Boogie' is simply filled with sure-fire hits for the discerning dance-floor. Lesser known tracks remastered from eye-wateringly expensive original vinyl releases by William Barlak, Living Colour & Carol Meriwether rub shoulders with the truly obscure and utterly wonderful French-Canadian disco outfit Black Sun in what can only be described as a musical celebration like you've never heard before. To commemorate the passing of the great jazz trumpeter Donald Byrd today, I'd like to share my edit, originally released on the Editions Disco label, of one of my favorite songs of his - the jazz-funk and breakbeat classic "Think Twice".  Produced by the incomparable Mizell Brothers, it was sampled (and provided the basis) for three straight-up classic records: A Tribe Called Quest's "Footprints", Main Source's "Looking At The Front Door", and Armand Van Helden's house masterpiece "Flowers".

Byrd's records were a gateway for many of us who got into the nascent jazz-funk, rare groove and breakbeat scenes of the 1990s as DJs and collectors.  But his 1970s albums for Blue Note like Street Lady, Places & Spaces, as well as those of his protégés the Blackbyrds, were not just a rich trove of hip-hop samples for the eager beat-digger - they contained great songs that helped us to appreciate jazz as a popular art-form that was still engaged with contemporary soul, funk and R&B music, and encouraged investigating its infinite musical dimensions further.  He was, and is, tremendously important to my development as a DJ and lover of music.  We've lost a giant today.  RIP.
