Icelandic teenage wunderkind Samaris’ first UK release comes in the shape of an eponymously-titled album on 29th July. Samaris compiles their two Icelandic-released EPs, Hljóma Þú (2011) and Stofnar falla (recorded at Sigur Rós’ Sundlaugin studio with Gunnar Tynes of múm, 2012.

Combining disparate elements of electronics (Þórður Kári Steinþórsson), clarinet (Áslaug Rún Magnúsdóttir) and Jófríður Ákadóttir’s haunting voice, Samaris mix glacial electronica and bold, percussive beats with haunting chant-like vocals - the lyrics culled from nineteenth century Icelandic poems. Viltu Vitrast for example retells an Icelandic folk tale about villages who ask for help from a supernal being, but worry it will choose not to manifest its power on Earth. The effect is simultaneously ancient and modern – an ethereal sound filled with dark spaces and alien atmosphere. 

Formed in 2011 in Reykjavik, within months Samaris had won both the Icelandic Músíktilraunir (past winners include the likes of Of Monsters and Men) and Kraumur Award. The band’s show at Iceland Airwaves in 2012, attracted the attention of Line Of Best Fit, Drowned In Sound and NPR amongst many others. Singer Jófríður also performs with her sister Ásthildur in the more folk-inclined Pascal Pinion.

The original version of the track was recorded in Marfa, TX, before the band commenced official tracking for 'Shields' in Cape Cod and New York, and was released earlier this month on 'Shields Expanded' and 'Shields B-Sides.' The collections build on their acclaimed 2012 iTunes Album of the Year with exclusive b-sides, demos, and remixes.

'Shields' was released to some of 2012's best reviews, with Pitchfork calling it "magnificently epic" and the NY Times hailing it as "enthralling." The band performed tracks from the album on Colbert, Fallon, Letterman, Leno, Austin City Limits, and Ellen, and played their biggest headlining and international festival shows to date.

1)     Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.

I’ve started collecting records fifteen years ago and, with the passing years, as my addiction to buying records grew, my collection got bigger, counting now about 1500 singles/LPs and somewhere between 500 and 1000  45/7's. Although in the beginning I bought only hip-hop albums and singles and a few funk and jazz records for the breaks, now I collect old (and newly made) organic music from different parts of the world; I suppose it’s my way of discovering various cultures. 
 
2) 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format.

Of course. I like it because it’s very DJ friendly: eighty 12’’ records weigh a lot more than the same amount of 45/7 records. Plus, these records usually have one song per side which makes them very easy to sort through.
 
3) One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?

Well, all I can say is that I threw in mostly old rhythm & blues songs, infused with an exotic/latin twist, together with some classic northern soul tunes, but also a few fresh tracks in the beginning. I like to let the songs create the story of the mix.

4) Where can people catch you / listen to your music? 

You can find me spinning records at different venues mainly in Bucharest and around the country. Together with my friends I started Vinyl, Rum, Tapas & Wine – a series of parties with the main objective to bring back vinyl as the main ingredient for social gatherings.
