Andrius Arutiunian’s new work, The Irresistible Powers of Silent Talking (2021), investigates automated deception recognition systems, and their worrying use in border surveillance. In this artwork, a system is recreated in a virtual environment, and put under its own duress - brought to life through a voiceless, remodelled iBorderCtrl avatar.

Larissa Sansour & Søren Lind - As If No Misfortune Had Occurred in the Night, 2022

My Garden, My Sanctuary presents a collection of new, immersive artworks by Yaloo and Sian Fan - two artists using creative technology to tell stories of ancestry and self-discovery in a hyperconnected world.

In this exhibition, the artists submerge us in watery worlds from which they reclaim their cultural identities and remake their coming-of-age stories.

Yaloo and Sian Fan present a series of large-scale animated installations and interactive gaming environments using commodified symbols of East-Asian culture that have become commonplace globally. These symbols include K-pop dance routines, the use of seaweed in food and beauty products, hypersexualised female avatars and spiritual icons stripped of their religious significance. Yaloo and Sian Fan take these symbols and remix them to build playful new worlds.

Curated by Carrie Chan, our 2022 Curator-in-Residence, the exhibition challenges the conventional ways we define our backgrounds to embrace identities that are more fluid.

Introduction to My Garden, My Sanctuary

For our winter season, the worlds of artists Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley and Josèfa Ntjam collide in a free immersive exhibition. Working across archives, maps and video games, the artists consider how acts of resistance, rebuilding and reimagining can lead to transformative new worlds.

Both Danielle and Josèfa’s worlds play with time to shift our view on how the past impacts our present. If conflicting versions of history can exist, so can alternative possibilities for our future. Through their careful observations of archives and understanding of needs, they show us how acts of resistance, rebuilding and reimagining can lead to transformative new worlds.

LuYang Arcade Liverpool transforms the gallery into a retro-futuristic arcade composed of games, avatars and environments inspired by anime, sci-fi, Buddhism and neuroscience. Motorcycle racing simulators, Space Invader joy-con towers and dance mat stations transport you to entertaining and thought-provoking worlds.
