On Wednesday, October 5th, Windsor, Ontario participated in SoundCloud's Global Meetup Day by grabbing field recordings from the Ambassador Bridge, which is the busiest international border crossing in North America. 

Our definition of the meaning of sound considers the significance of sounds that people might not notice or that they might overlook as background noise. The term "cross-border" is used often around here and we wanted to apply that to the concept of sound itself, making transgressive or extreme sounds the focus of our contributions. 

NOTE: these sounds are best experienced either through headphones or just played very, very loud! ;)

The first part of Windsor's contribution to the SoundCloud Global Meetup Day took us to Ambassador Bridge where we recorded the loud, continuous stream of 10,000 commercial vehicles that use the bridge daily. 

The second part of the Windsor meetup, however, approached "the meaning of sound" from an even more extreme perspective: that of touring grindcore heavyweights, Napalm Death! We asked Napalm's vocalist Barney some questions about what sound means to him and we uploaded some of the highlights to share with the SoundCloud community. Enjoy!

An excerpt from Bedlam Maternity as read by author Morgan Gallagher, recorded live via Skype. 

In this passage, a new maternity unit is just about to be opened in the east end of London by a minor royal. In the ward, a young devout Muslim woman who has simply stated her name as "Shafia" has been attending antenatal appointments in secret. She has just birthed and having whispered the name of God into the baby's ear, has given him up for adoption. She plans to leave the hospital within an hour or so of birth to go back to her family, with them having no idea what has occurred.
