Here we are with the first Curle of 2014, after a lengthy but refreshing hibernation. First up is our now Berlin based compatriot Peter Van Hoesen, who has been a good friend since more than 10 years. He already did a remix for us (Curle028), a split EP together with Donato Dozzy (Curle024) and a mix (Curle025CD), but this is Peter’s first full EP on the label. We’re absolutely sure you’re going to love both tracks!

Took a bit of a break from demos and releases after extending the family with a cute little boy, but now we’re back with some of the best deep techno and house lined up for you! But first, something completely different.
Michele Mininni hails from the south of Italy and counts everything from post- and krautrock over new wave, house and disco amongst his influences. He’s been a DJ for years, but only recently released his debut EP on Optimo Trax in Glasgow. He immediately found himself on the playlists of Beats In Space and Rinse FM. We were literally blown away when he sent us his music and didn’t hesitate to release it although it’s not what you’re used to hear from us. It’s hard to describe ‘Endless Ceremony’. Epic, but not as you know it. Cosmic, definitely.
For the remix we thought of Rocketnumbernine. Two brothers with releases on Soul Jazz, Four Tet’s Text label and more recently an album on Smalltown Supersound. Currently touring with James Holden and  Neneh Cherry. Their remix could be described as almost dreamy electronica/idm.
We think this is a really special release. The following people already agree: Gavin Russom, Âme, Ripperton, A Made Up Sound, James Holden, Optimo, Deadbeat, Tim Sweeney, Locked Groove… First pressing on coloured vinyl!

It's been a while since we did something on our subdivision Petite. You know, this is where we like to re-release those forgotten pearls, with a new remix on the flip.
This time we chose Kinda Kickin' by DJ Boom, which is in fact a collaboration between Matthew Herbert and Charles Webster. The original vinyl goes for over 110eur on Discogs and is a longtime favourite of ours. We heard Move D play it at a festival this summer, but strangely enough not too many other people seem to know about this house gem.
On remix duties this time someone very close to the label (and our hearts) since the first collaboration in 2007 for ‘Acid Bells’. Efdemin recently delivered what is maybe his best album to date and also this remix for Kinda Kickin’ is absolutely superb. Enjoy.

The releases on Curle roughly go anywhere between deep house and solid techno, but Hiver’s deep techno sound is probably what I appreciate most myself if I had to choose. Melodic, floating and based on traditions but without sounding like something you already heard too often, that’s about how I would describe the Italian duo’s second Curle EP. Their first one got played by Sven Väth and Efdemin just to name a few. Hiver hold a residency at Milan’s Dude Club, but in the meantime have played everywhere from Dimensions festival to Panorama Bar.

Efdemin has been one of the key artists on Curle since his 2007 debut for the Belgian label, with big releases such as ‘Acid Bells’, ‘America/The Pulse’, remixes from Martyn, John Beltran &amp; Matt O’Brien, and of course the mix-cd ‘Carry On, Pretend We’re Not In The Room’. The long-awaited follow-up ‘Please’ includes two tracks from around the 10 minute mark; ‘Farnsworth House’ and ‘Blount’. Almost two years ago we reissued DJ Boom ‘Kinda Kickin’ with an extra Efdemin remix on CURLE-P06D. Because y’all loved it so much, we decided to reissue some more Matthew Herbert deep house goodies. First up is ‘See You On Monday’ from the iconic “Part One” EP – 20 years old but still timeless, and now available digitally for the first time! On remix duties is Linkwood, who released his brilliant “Expressions” album on Firecracker last year. He for one knows how to keep the groove whilst diving deep. The 12" includes limited silk screen artwork - first 300 on transparent vinyl.

11th November sees dynamic duo Hiver return to cherished Belgium imprint, Curle Recordings, with their latest EP, entitled ‘Soundescence’.   
 
This excellent four-track offering is the Italian pairing’s third EP on Curle, following on from ‘Blue Aconite’ in 2013 and ‘Same Mistake Twice’ last year, which garnered them support from techno heavyweights such as Sven Väth, Laurent Garnier and Efdemin.
 
Curle, who recently celebrated their 10th anniversary, have fast become one of the most exciting and respected underground labels in the game. Past releases by the likes of Hiver, as well as prolific DJ/producer, Matthew Herbert, whose timeless track ‘See You On Monday’ was recently reissued by them, has contributed towards this success.
 
Kicking off the release is the title-named track, ‘Soundescence’, displaying the melodic, psychedelic sound Hiver has been praised for previously. Delicate synth patterns perfectly bled with the understated drums and percussive elements. This ethereal approach to Techno continues on the following deep-groover, ‘One More Snooze’.
 
The B-side opener, ‘Phonotis’, immediately breaks the silence with a steady 4/4 rhythm, seeing a squelchy synth bassline, warm pads and floating atmospheric textures scattered throughout the six-minute number.
 
Closing the EP is ‘Floor Diving’, which once again showcase Hiver’s sleek and seductive style of dance music that is made for the dark, underground clubs of Europe and beyond.

It had been since the DJ Qu remix of Walt J that we did something on our subdivision Petite. You know, this is where we like to re-release those forgotten pearls, with a new remix on the flip. This time we chose for "On And On" by Italian-living-in-Scandinavia Raiders Of The Lost ARP. In 2003 "On And On" appeared as the D2 track on his album "4". But we thought this track is so great, it deserved a full A-side. On remix duties this time someone we've been wanting to work with since a long time, Patrice Scott. We've been following his Sistrum label since the very first release, and he just never disappoints. Neither does he this time. Check it out!

Thomas Neyens first left his mark on the dance scene under his alias Kiani & His Legion, with two releases on Red D's We Play House Recordings in 2013 and more recently on Something Happening Somewhere, quickly demonstrating his accomplished production flair. This led the Belgian establishing his own imprint, Tanzbar Records, where he dropped two EPs under his Far Out Radio Systems moniker – bringing a more 'dancefloor focused' sound. Now after a two year hiatus, Neyens returns to his Far Out Systems alias for this EP, his first offering for a label outside of Tanzbar Records.

'Spheres' kicks off the release, with its soft bassline perfectly complimenting the hazy synths, syncopated drums and the mesmerising nuances from the hang drum that feature later in the track. The slow burning style continues on 'Jane Goodall', with the track's atmospheric textures gradually overpowered by a steady selection of drums, percussion and off-kilter effects. 'Vaquita' sees Far Out Radio Systems up the tempo whilst still sonically retaining the melancholic, hypnotic sound of the EP, as the snare-led rhythm gradually gains in momentum over its seven minute duration. Closing this excellent four track EP is 'On A Quest', a pulsating number that combines soaring, ethereal synths with a club ready groove that is perfect for the shadowy dancefloors the Belgian DJ/producer performs to.

Since the release of the latter mentioned EP, Hiver have been busy behind the booth, performing in the UK, China, Germany, Holland and, of course, in Italy, where they still hold a residency at DUDE Club. 

Kicking off the EP is ‘Elipse’, a stunning four-minute track that nods to avant-garde artists such as Wolfgang Voigt’s GAS alias or Brian Eno, as the pair gradually weaves several layers of shining, atmospheric tones before slowly fading into the background.

Title-named track ‘Air Castles’ follows, with the tight selection of drums combined with the ebb and flow of soaring synths creating a melodic style of techno that has become synonymous with their name.

Next is ‘Aleutine’, a song that similarly blends Hiver’s characteristically ethereal, hazy synths alongside more vibrant analogue bleeps to great effect. These delicate synths are later given the chance to gleam as the track comes to a close. 

Closing this excellent four-track EP is deep-groover ‘Leisure’, seeing Hiver up the tempo through their clever use of percussive elements, sharp synths and headstrong drums.

Back in 2008 it ended up on the first place in the Groove chart, but for some reason we never had it remixed. We’ve always been a fan of Pablo Bolivar’s sound. He already did a track on Curle018 and we’re glad to have him back on board for a double EP this time. In the meantime he released an album (as Pulshar) &amp; EP on Loco Dice’s Desolat label, did remixes for Audision, Mikkel Metal &amp; SCSI-9, and continued to run his own AvantRoots imprint.

No need to introduce Jonas Kopp anymore. The Argentinian made his Curle debut in 2008 and has been a regular guest with releases and remixes ever since. 'Desire' will be his third full EP on the label. Next to that Jonas Kopp already released on Spectral Sound, Ostgut Ton, Stroboscopic Artefacts and DJ Deep's Deeply Rooted House label. And of course on his own Traut and Manzel imprints.

Move D is a true legend in deep, house music. We own A LOT of his records. When we found the track 'Wanna Do' on the 50th Groove magazine cd full of exclusive tracks, we contacted him to ask if he would be interested in a vinyl release. Hiver's demo reached me shortly after I had bought their debut release on Vidab. Since that's a label I tend to buy blindly, I hadn't heard it yet, so I found myself listening to both the demo and the 12" on the same night. I immediately fell in love with the analogue sounding deep techno of the Italian duo and asked one of my favourite producers - there is nobody with a better sound, period - to have a go at one of the tracks. Tobias. (Freund) totally nailed it, again. A very atmospheric piece that fans of Convextion/E.R.P. should definitely check out.
