"For Juneteenth I wanted to make the mix as black as possible. I know this is technically a day of celebration for African-Americans but any people whose ancestors were a part of the transatlantic slave trade can see how much this day means to many. So I chose to include black music globally. This mix is very me as I love genre-switching, but the theme of highlighting black artists and producers is very present. The power of sound in a strange land when our enslaved ancestors were tragically and violently stolen from their homes was undeniably a survival tactic and very therapeutic. I could even feel the change in my mood before and after recording." - @mistervacation

☼ Sunrise Set ☼

This mix I made at the end of 2022. I felt like this was something that really summarized the last year of loving and appreciating myself. Really understanding my needs and prioritizing what I consider self nourishment to be. Self-restoration is needed to restore and love others. I incorporated some of my favorite tracks from 2022 along with some blends that got me through the year.  The mix is full of energy throughout its entirety  with variations of genres that evoke the body to move. When you take a listen, you’re gonna feel strong, sexy, groovy, and sensual to say the least.  I chose one of my favorite portraits taken at the beginning of last year by none other than Julian Camilo

Fact Mix 912: LYZZA (Jun '23)

Ashland Mines, AKA Total Freedom, AKA Big Gay Idiot DJ, AKA Bobby Beethoven, is one of the best and most influential DJs of the 21st century. Starting out at pioneering parties like Mustache Mondays and Wildness (which he cofounded with Wu Tsang)—and a regular at GHE20G0TH1K—Mines helped to define the style that would become known, however cringe-inducingly, as experimental club or deconstructed club, directly inspiring fellow visionaries like Arca. 

Like some of the best DJs before him, Mines uses the CDJs as an instrument, but that doesn't mean just fancy tricks and looping. Instead, he artfully throws together clashing sounds—effects, samples, monologues, pop and R&B acapellas, and beats that run the gamut from dancehall to kuduro to breaks and techno. He's not afraid of the grotesquerie of human life and movement (just check out the monologue at the beginning of this mix), and he likes to push buttons. Once he put on a party where dancing wasn't allowed. Some of his sets are intentionally anxiety-inducing, evoking horror movies and modern classical composers like Penderecki, while others are bouncy and ebullient, weaving between genres and tempos like an old-school platformer. The best are both.

On Mines's RA Podcast—a milestone 900th in the series—he shows off this inimitable style, sharpened and reinforced over a decade-and-a-half of playing some of the world's best parties, fashion shows, you name it. He's the kind of DJ who creates his own music as he goes along. He makes you hear old tracks—especially pop music and R&B—in a whole new way. Titled "Cursed Piercing," this is a near-hour of controlled chaos that'll confound you at one moment and deeply move you the next.

Composer of the soundtrack for 'The show is over,' the main installation for Wu Tsang's exhibition, ASMARA (aka Asma Maroof) is an electronic musician, DJ and producer. She is also known as NGUZUNGUZU, a duo formed with Daniel Pineda in Los Angeles that explores dystopian sound atmospheres.

For the "visionary company" exhibition, she offers us an evocative tracklist mix, blending avant-garde jazz accents with vaporous electronic layers.
