Stagdale is a graphic short story and flexi disc/download
EP from Clay Pipe founder Frances Castle and her
musical alter ego The Hardy Tree.
It’s the summer of 1975 and despite the addition of a
new housing estate the ancient village of Stagdale
remains an insular place, suspicious of change. Nestled
into the chalk-scared valley lies Stagdale Manor, home to
Lord Ethelbert, a self-proclaimed descendant of a Saxon
King. Once grand, the estate is slowly slipping into a
state of dilapidation.
Hoping to find a new life for themselves, 12-year-old
Kathy and her recently divorced mother rent an old damp
cottage from Lord Ethelbert on the outskirts of the
village. It’s not long before Kathy befriends local boy Joe
who enjoys telling her stories about village life, both past
and present. He takes her to the museum and shows her
the empty glass case where the Stag Jewel, a Saxon
gold amulet in the shape of a deer’s head, used to be
displayed. The jewel was thought to have once brought
Stagdale prosperity and luck, but according to local
legend it was stolen by a German boy who lived in
Kathy’s house during World War Two.

Jon Brook’s ‘How to Get to Spring’ is his fourth record on Clay Pipe. Stepping into new sonic territory with a gentle nod to his more recent Advisory Circle work, he has produced a beautiful new record that moves us gently from the winter into the spring.
“It’s when we realise that even the most seemingly inextricable connections are but, a flicker. Despite devices put in place, to the contrary, every connection is, ultimately, a temporary one.
She considered the landscape; how it looked, how it sounded, how it felt. The landscape cannot hide in Winter; everything is laid open to examination and interpretation, whether it wants to be, or not. It also adapts and evolves; very few situations and elements stay in stasis for long, through elemental or societal influence. Prevailing winds, for example, over time, shape the appearance and structure. Other forces have similar effects. “Some of them have been here, for over a thousand years”, she thought to herself. It became even more important to harness the connections with them, when it became apparent that sometimes, they would appear; at other times, not; despite the search.
The physical and temporal connection probably lasted a minute, at most. The relationship was formed, based on how it looked, how it sounded and most importantly, how it felt. The effects of that connection, however, lasted much longer.
We may consider ourselves mirrors, when we form connections. That reflected image may be delusive, but occasionally, it is quite the opposite.
She looked at the branch, as it reached towards her hand. “Well then” it seemed to say.
“Well then”, she said.”
