Gaia Theory 1

The atmospheric composition remains fairly constant, providing the conditions that contemporary life has adapted to. All the atmospheric gases other than noble gases present in the atmosphere are either made by organisms or processed by them. The Gaia theory states that the Earth's atmospheric composition is kept at a dynamically steady state by the presence of life.

The stability of the atmosphere in Earth is not a consequence of chemical equilibrium as it is in planets without life. Oxygen is the second most reactive electro-negative element after fluorine, and should combine with gases and minerals of the Earth's atmosphere and crust. Traces of methane (at an amount of 100,000 tonnes produced per annum)  should not exist, as methane is combustible in an oxygen atmosphere.

Dry air in the atmosphere of Earth contains roughly (by volume) 78.09% nitrogen, 20.95% oxygen, 0.93% argon, 0.039% carbon dioxide, and small amounts of other gases including methane. Lovelock originally speculated that concentrations of oxygen above about 25% would increase the frequency of wildfires and conflagration of forests. Recent work on the findings of fire-caused charcoal in Carboniferous and Cretaceous coal measures, in geologic periods when O2 did exceed 25%, has supported Lovelock's contention

Gaia Theory 2

And what might constitute a life cycle for such a being- might it be as strange as that of the slime mold ? What stage would Gaia be in now? Is our species part of her maturity or an incubation period ? Is Gaia herself somehow part of a larger living being, perhaps on a galactic scale ? If so how do the cells of this larger being remain in communication? Will we eventually be able to experience something of the awareness which Gaia has ?

Fresnel 
For mange som jobber innenfor teater, konsert og lysbransjen så er fresnel en sentral gjenstad. Det er nemlig en type lampe som brukes til scenebelysning. Men denne lampen inneholder en  spesiell optisk linse. Det er nemlig på grunn av denne linsen som sitter i lampen som har gjort at lampen heter fresnel. Men scenen var egentlig ikke linsens startsted. 
Vi skal helt tilbake til 1800-tallet, hvor den franske fysikeren Augustin-Jean Fresnel oppfant det vi i dag kaller for «fresnel-linse». Linsen var spesielt laget for fyrtårn. Nå kunne nemlig fyrtårnene lyse opp lenger enn noen gang før. Det gjorde det enklere for båter å finne land. Linsen var også tynnere enn noen gang før og det var dermed enklere å lage linsene enn de gamle. Man trengte heller ikke like mye matriale som før, dermed sparta man en del kostnader. Den aller første ble montert i 1823 i et Franskt fyrtårn (Cordouan-tårnet). Lysstrålen var mer konsentrert og kunne bli opptil 32 kilometer lang på den tiden. Senere har vi fått nyere utstyr som kan gjøre at lyset når enda lenger. Men fra dette tidspunkt og fremover i tid ble fresnel-linser bruk. Vi bruker det til og med i dag. Trafikklys har som oftest fresnel-linse, prosjektorer og «overheads» bruker også en form for fresnel-linse til å projeksjere, vi bruker det også innenfor scenesammenhenger og det finnes også noen fyrtårn som fortsat bruker den teknologien. Men , dessverre har fyrtårnene gått mere over til å bruke vanlige lamper. For disse har blitt kraftigere i løpet av årene og dermed har Fresnel-linsene sklidd mer og mer ut, på grunn av dette. Men det lyser fortsatt inn i noen fresnel-linser fortsatt der ute.
