Cantos From the New Pantheon Volume 1

The Awakening of Exalted Spring

When I first met her I had my initial impression, which is not always to be trusted. When I saw her a second time there was a different impression. More of a feeling. So the words came to mind, glowing faintly until one day, I saw a story in it's entirety. Not necessarily a beginning and an end, mind you, but as one opening a book in the middle of a fascinating account told by the author of a simple moment.
Here is the moment I happened upon.

I wrote this song to include as many Hendrix song titles as possible while telling a story.

As a kid I'd stare at a picture of Hendrix with his sultry face and cigarette smoke swirling around. Cigarettes were bad! His posture was riveting! Somehow that rebel look of his along with the cigarette smoke became associated in  my mind with the public and private image of my parents and their relationship.
As the story goes, my mom, with her Black Power T-shirt and hot pants met my dad at a grocery store where he worked. We were told he chased her down the aisles. I never doubted this because they did the same at home when I was little. 
My dad would bring home fruit with stickers that read "Ripe!" I'd look on in suspense as he'd stick one to her rear end without her noticing. She'd walk around for hours with it. I giggled at them a lot. Of course, I remember difficult times too. Their relationship was a mystery to me. How can 2 people endure so much hardship while retaining so much joy?
And while most at that time thought it almost impossible for a black man and a white woman to survive courtship and marriage in the deep south, I'm living proof you can do what you want if it's really what you want.

7 months ago we set out to begin work on a project, but were unable to continue due to individual circumstances. In our original recording
the lyrics were completed quickly while the vocal mix came together in just a few days.
With all that is happening in the world today, particularly with governments and sensationalized media, it shouldn't surprise that this song is about the relationship between government and the people it "serves".

I started singing this song while walking and taking photos of trees. Had to hurry home to write it! All music is made with GarageBand presets and lots of reverb to get a nostalgic feel. (Fuzzy vocals give me this vibe)

A message from Phil McWalter:
I wanted to cover this song out of respect (David Bowie died 10th Jan last year)and also because I felt it can be listened to as another epitaph in the same manner as BlackStar; the parallels between the spaceman (1969's Major Tom)trying to get back to Earth from this 1980's "heaven's high" and the 2016 "Look up here, I'm in heaven" from 'Lazarus' resonated with me. Well, RIP David and don't break an axe on the ice old bean... it's probably not worth coming back to pick up your dropped cell phone, nice thought though that is, but thanks for everything, always.

It was rather daunting doing all the vocals on a landmark Bowie song! I can't imagine why I set out to try, other than foolhardiness. My six layered backing vocals (on 'I'm happy...' and 'My Momma said...') were enriched by @MarkJBennett in Scotland, The Irate Pirate @gibson-j-4-5 in Stockton, England and Lisa West @Faerytale in Texas [who also features solo in the middle eight - so beautifully]. The fab drums were played by Rick Medlock @Rick-4-1 in Coventry. A very big and heartfelt thank you for helping me out my valuable friends. I did the Other Stuff in London, god bless the internet! The 12-string harmonised guitar was a tip of the hat to Space Oddity... there are other references too: DB sings "and may God's love be with you..." after Lisa "sings My Momma said" in the middle eight and it is DB singing "Far above the world" over the outro, well I guess he is now, bless him. His Ma probably told him not to do a lot of other things too ;-)

He asked in the Tweet, "Do I pray?" The way he sang his words sounded like a prayer to me. Being lonely can feel like you're being eaten, slowly. It wears away and you are bare to the bones. It also helps you see from a different perspective, if you're looking for one. I have always thought that healing, understanding, compassion and empathy are cultivated in the darkness. Loneliness is just before going to bed. It is lying on a rock or pillow, hell and dirt, just before your hollow being falls asleep. It is an emptiness created to fill you with some strange love, unexpected and unseen. 
Thank you, Bradley, for being honest in your words and music. This song helped me understand myself a little bit better!

The Sea WIP

I was driving and suddenly began singing, 'Head Like A Hole'. Why? No idea. I couldn't even remember all of the lyrics, just the chorus. I was also listening to, 'Adagio For Strings' a lot, too in other than 440 frequency to see if I'd feel different. I did. That's another story.
Though I'm a little sad the fantastic synth intro is missing, I'm pleased with my overall attempt at this mashup. I hope you think it's fun, too!
The next time someone tells you that money talks, ask yourself if you've ever heard it. I almost did once. Then I remembered how creepy graven images can look, especially when you're not looking at them!
