I (Slick) would also like to address the question of the name: the out-of-universe explanation is that the word "TURBOCHESS" appeared to be me in a dream and I knew I had to use it for something special. It would either be a poem, a game, a song...something. It stuck with me, so I figured now was as good a time as any to use it. The irony is that I am comically bad at chess, and am practically incapable of winning a single game.

This song. Good lord this song.
I've been working on this [[little nipper]] for upwards of around a month now, but faced adversity due to going on vacation + subsequent weeks of busywork and general demotivation. I did NOT like how my initial outline for this cover sounded, and couldn't push past the second leitmotif section even though I'd been itching to cover this track since it came out.
I finally cracked and reeeaally drilled into this song two days ago, and because of that brief stint of inspiration, it's finally ready! Didn't really mix it after exporting but I'm so done with working on this song and wanna get more projects out of the way, haha. Who knew all it would take was a little... creative freedom?? ;DD ;DDDD ;;;DDDDD ;;;dDDDDdDDD


I tried to make the lead instruments near the beginning and end sound "kiddy," but there's still a bit of sassy grunge retained from the first version of the song, such as the heavy snare. Still, I tried to spin things in a more emotionally-driven direction to better suit new Camellia. This is also my second time making a really "electric" song (first was FOLLOWED), so I'm glad I got the practice in... I really want to make more original music like this.

I sampled a lot of audio for this one, but chief among them (to me, anyway) is "Plash, Plop, Gurgle" from MadRatDead! I misspelled the game's name in this description for 2 months before I noticed! Kill me! What better way to capture the essence of Camellia, by using music... composed by a different Camellia!

This song, in case you're not familiar, was written by Medeski, Martin, and Wood with guitarist John Scofield, and performed by them on an album eponymously named A Go Go. Josh has always been a huge fan of both MMW and J.S., and has always wanted to play more of their music, as he used to cover a couple of their songs in one of his main old bands. 

  Josh laid down the bass and after going back an forth a couple of times with Ken and his thrilling drums, they established the rhythm section. Soon after, Josh added his jazzy guitar, as well. We needed someone to play John Medeski's part, too, of course. So, we asked JJ if he'd do the honors, which he did in grand fashion. He also added some triangle hits you can listen for, that add a little bit more pizzaz to the whole thing. 

  Once it was all laid down, we needed a good mix, and no one is gooder than Stephen, so we asked him to mix it for us, which he did in his always pro manner. 

  This was a lot of fun to record, and we hope that comes through. This is a stripped down Eclectic Collective collab, where most of what we're all doing is improv. We hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed making it.

Kristian started this particular Trousle a year ago, and I helped to finish it up today. Really proud of how this turned out! In spite of some slightly rocky areas, Kristian had a fantastic start on it, and it mostly needed just minor composition fixes.
