[disquiet0482] Through The Gate

Disquiet Junto Project 0482: Exactly That Gap. The Assignment: Make a musical haiku following instructions from Marcus Fischer.

I started with planning a formal 5-7-5 haiku grid. Then I searched for appropriate samples. As (mostly) all my samples represent memories, it was intended as a haiku on particular meta moments of (my) life. Syllables should consist of up to two parallel sounds. Breathing was part of the concept. 

The first result where nice to have but I somehow missed universal significance. Reading some thoughts on haikus and that meaning is not a necessary ingredient reassured me somewhat. I rebuild it anyway and spent a lot of time with the the back and forth of the breathing positions. Now I'm happy with it's deeper meaning (which is optional to perceive) and I love the gap.

Another visit to the absent detective for Disquiet Junto 

This weeks instructions were to use a recording of typing as the rhythmic basis of a track. For some reason despite not having taken part for sometime this grabbed my imagination.

Most of the track apart from the solo is a supercollider program. Using machine listening to derive the timing from my typing. Despite my original intentions being very different the combination of typing and the patterns somehow got me in a blade runner/noir kind of mood and I leaned right into that. Indulgent but sod it 

If you are wondering what I'm typing it is this nonsense - I didn't want to have too big gaps between lines so I just kept typing. I think we can all agree it is complete bollocks: 

"The door swung open. It hadn’t been locked

I cautiously went in. The place was in disarray, chairs tipped over, rubbish everywhere. One window slightly open.

I surveyed the scene - was the occupant just a very messy person or had the place been turned over. I was never to find out. 

I heard a noise outside and before I had chance to react a woman came bursting through the door. 

“Ah there you are” she started 

She was kind of out of place, well dressed, a nice dress, furs. Classy - not like this dive 

“Look I’ve been phoning all week. I simply must know how you are getting one” 

“I’m not who you think I am” I said 

She stopped and looked at me

“And who do I think you are?” 

“well…” 

“God man - focus. Now look about the case - I need to see some progress. Not you dithering about here in this office. Get out there. Get some work done. I’m paying you enough” 

And with that she left "

"I had just purchased a new audio plug-in -- Drip, and wished to try it out. I did not want to test it on any former projects' tracks of mine, so I opted to open a new file on my DAW. Then, I saw Marc's email detailing this week's disquiet junto project.

I downloaded and imported the audio file authored by Chris Kallmyer, and listened to it three times, choosing what portion to edit out and use as a soundbed. I cut a chosen section out, and edited it down to a usable musical measure; the tempo approximated 70.56 beats-per-minute.

I copied and pasted seventeen repetitions of it side by side, and I then effected it with a Blue Cat chorus, SoundToys' MicroShift, and a lush and lovely reverb called Oril River. I automated the reverb to venture from 100% dry to 100% wet over the course of the seventeen bars to give the idea that the chime-bed was fading far-off into the distance over the course of the tune.

I then accidentally found some scraps of audio on my DAW workbench and took them to be happy accidents. I used them, editing out singular tones and rather brief passages. I placed them at the beginning, middle, and end of the soundbed, merely following instinct as I went, eventually forming a coherent composition, which reminded me of clock-chiming; thus, the name of the work.

Funny thing is, I forgot to test and utilize my new Drip plug-in. LOL!"

My second Naviar Haiku challenge (https://www.naviarrecords.com/about/naviar-haiku/). It's based on this haiku that was created with the aid of artificial intelligence:

moonbeams
like fishes –
swim over the river

I hope the allusions are self-evident and although at its core it's based on Chopin's Waltz No 9 in Ab (Op. 69 No. 1), I thought it had elements of early 20th-century impressionist music so I've invented the tag "electro-impressionism" to describe it :)

Disquiet Junto Project 0467: Toolbox Show & Tell. The Assignment: Share a tip for making music that you learned during the pandemic.

80% of my music started on a cheap android DAW app called "Caustic". The sound is not perfect, but I like the workflow. Anyway, since 1 year or so I try to switch to Ableton Live. Because of the lockdown I had a lot of time to flatten the learning curve with this DAW.

My tip is about "Follow Action", to bee seen in the Clip Editor. Follow Action allows a clip to trigger other clips by probability, in the screen example of the track cover there is "play again" with prob 1, "play any other" with prob 2. The clip is one of of many clips which only contains some note on a scale or a chord.

Normally I somehow reject pure generative music, although I place a lot of value on chance in my own. It always seemed dishonorable to me to let a software (that I didn't write myself) generate music and claim this music to be "mine".

However, with "Follow Action" I have the possibility to achieve an (in my opinion) honorable mix of probabilities and composition.

In this case, there are different tracks with different signatures and different Gongs in A minor. I even added "empty" clips to get some "silence" into it. The probabilty for the different tracks differs, one could for example use one track to establish sequencial clip triggers, to include motives that are bigger than inside a bar.

(And please consider "honorable" a way to big word here…)

Courtly Waltz (remix / collab)

I remixed/remangled/reimagined a previous ice-originated piece, one that had already been through numerous incarnations, all based on my original ice recording in 2013 (I think).

Interestingly, you can still hear moments of tinkling iciness buried in the noise…

During the early 1990s I studied Mathematics and Computer Science. The world wide web was still largely text-based and mostly empty. Today things are obviously different, though I still thoroughly enjoy art, design, cinema and music in all its forms. I have traveled all over the world for nearly two decades, visiting just over 140 countries. Japan is my favorite. All of this I attempt to incorporate into my music and art.
