In October of 1986, Roberto Mandalay and Kyle Van Landingham, two music majors at Lewis & Clark College in Oregon, set out to experience the natural rhythms and good vibes of the US West Coast. Traveling in a borrowed Buick, the duo spent their days bathing in sound along the salt sprayed and tree framed coastal highways. Night time brought cheap hotel rooms and hours spent huddled around an 8-track TASCAM, guitars in hand, an old synth buzzing as the two tried to capture not just the sound, but the feel of that day’s travels. After a heated argument on the final day of the trip, at an I-5 rest stop somewhere between Eugene and Salem, Roberto dropped off Kyle along with the hours of music they had recorded. The two would never see or speak to each other again.

Discovered in a garage in 2021, these newly digitized tapes are available to the public for the first time.
