Possibly my favorite mix I’ve ever made. This one is a soundtrack to an imaginary film based on the Brotherhood of Eternal Love’s time in Maui in the late 60s early 70s. My movie idea comes from the non-fictional book about the group “Orange Sunshine” [2010] by Nicholas Schou, as well as the wacky and terrible 1971 film “Rainbow Bridge”, which stars some of the members of the Brotherhood and captures the strangeness of that time and place.
Some background: The Brotherhood of Eternal Love was an underground fraternity formed by a group of hippie surfers from Southern California who through extensive hash and marijuana smuggling operations almost singlehandedly funded the spread and dissemination of LSD across the country. 
The Brotherhood had distributed- largely for free- tens of millions of hits of their signature acid Orange Sunshine, with the goal of turning on all of America’s young people and igniting a utopian, psychedelic revolution.
However, bad vibes on the mainland brought about by mounting law enforcement pressure and a disastrous association with Timothy Leary led a faction of the more idealistic founding members seek refuge on the shores of Maui. 
Utopia had been there all along. After successfully completing some of the largest smuggling scores in history, the Brothers settled into actualizing the hippie dream in paradise. With a near infinite supply of cash and drugs, they spent their days surfing, tripping on acid, smoking hash, and getting further into drug crazed new-age spirituality. 
Needless to say, things got weird! There were constant UFO sightings by the brothers and they believed that these “Space Brothers” were trying to impart unto them universal knowledge and that with the right dosage of LSD, they could tap into the alien frequency.
 “Rainbow Bridge”- a semi-documentary, semi-improvised fiction that was filmed in Maui in 1970- captures much of the aforementioned vibe, as the main character encounters “various devotees of surfing, clairvoyance, zen, yoga, meditation, Tai-Chi and the odd ufoloist”. Made by an associate of Andy Warhol, the film features Jimi Hendrix in addition to some of the Brothers. The film is known for its footage of a Hendrix performance on Maui, some of the last ever taken as Jimi died mere weeks after filming. Jimi and the Brothers had dropped acid together and had bonded over course of the shoot. 
My movie would open with the arrival from Mexico of a Brotherhood ship carrying a cargo of marijuana which would eventually become known as “Maui Wowie” (true story) and follow the descent of the commune from its early nirvana into its drug-induced wildness, the UFO phenomenon and impending the arrival of Hendrix. The Brothers hypothesize that the music of Hendrix and a large enough gathering of tripped out believers will summon the Space Brothers and higher consciousness will be imparted, or better yet, the trippers will be able to leave the Earth. Haven’t quite worked out a conclusion yet but it won’t end well for our hippie protagonists!
As for the music, this mix features bittersweet sunshine pop, private press psychedelia, new age ambient, eastern mystic jams, and bummed out post hippie vibes. Several of the songs were recorded by artists living in Hawaii. Enjoy!
