We’re really happy to share with you another live episode (number 36) from our very own Bside team member: Lucy Lennox. 

This time, marks a special occasion as we record the episode at one of Peckham’s hottest venues: Jumbi. A listening bar founded by Rhythm Section boss and local legend Bradley Zero.

Lucy has been in London for almost two years now, representing some of the industry’s best house, disco and afrohouse artists at Defected’s in-house booking agency, Colluded. Her Bside selections reflect the sweet soulful sound she’s been soaking up amongst the very best in the business. 

With a superb sound system and a gorgeously sunny Sunday as her backdrop, you can feel the good vibes radiating throughout the episode! Jumbi has a set up after our own hearts, a single turntable that puts the focus on song selection, allowing Lucy to bounce between genres in true Bside style. Expect soul, disco and upbeat house; beautiful female vocalists and happy vibes.

Bside Live: Lulah Francs

For show number #182 we were treated to a live recording with Lulah Francs in one of London's hottest record shops/bars/venues - Next Door Records (big shout out to past guest Thom Parris for making this work!)

Lulah Francs is a multifaceted artist wearing the hats of DJ, vocalist, songwriter, and is now combining all of these to produce her own music. Raised between the vibrant musical scenes of Ibiza and London, Lulah's roots run deep in the beats of House music. Over the past four years, Lulah's bustling schedule in the DJing has seen her play in renowned venues such as Printworks, Glastonbury Festival, Hï Ibiza, Badaboum (Paris), The O2 Brixton, Sisyphos (Berlin), and Pikes Ibiza, just to name a few.

Beyond the DJ booth, Lulah is actively engaged in collaborative projects with producers, showcasing her vocal prowess and contributing to a diverse discography. Her debut track landed on the vinyl-only label, Semi Delicious, followed swiftly by a release on Edible, Eats Everything's label.

Not confined to recorded tracks, Lulah experiments by infusing vocals into her live DJ sets, exploring uncharted territory with plans to delve even deeper. Her creation, 'sub:terra,' a club night and radio show, reintroduces the distinctive Acid House sound of the UK and East Coast, captivating a new generation of clubbers. With successful stints at venues like The Cause in London, the legendary Malanga Ibiza, and the non-binary/all-female festival Risen, sub:terra has garnered acclaim from Resident Advisor. Fold and Fabric are next on Lulah's sub:terra hit list, alongside intimate underground spaces that resonate with the authentic essence of her craft.

Lulah's summer of 2023 saw her conquering major festivals across the UK, including Gottwood, El Dorado, Secret Garden Party, and Noisily. Her high-voltage energy radiates in vinyl-only sets at iconic clubs like Village Underground, E1, Fabric, and beyond.

Grazie a @anaisldc che alla festa Nul ha portato un registratore digitale.. Finalmente, dopo un’attesa biblica, eccoVi un nuovo #mix registrato “live” di ben due ore! Non è sempre facile cominciare da zero una serata, soprattutto quando fai da intro ad un concerto/performace, ma devo dire che me la son cavata bene! Questo #sound mi è molto rappresentativo: una esperienza unica, un viaggio elettronico, acid, deep e funk.. #Vinili vecchi, della #tradizione & vinili nuovi. Niente #discomusic, però: non era il vibe giusto per la serata… Penso che ultimamente la disco sia un po’ troppo inflazionata, quasi il genere preferito degli influencer/dj di Instagram. FarVi ballare con queste sonorità, è stato bellissimo e profondo: inoltre, ho conosciuto nuovi amici @annasusam Tel Aviv, @gamolkoart Bielorussia e ricevuto un sacco di complimenti. Ho fatto parte di Crispy, crew che dal 2009 ha organizzato party molto interessanti tra Padova e Venezia.

Crispy era il ritrovo per il clubber esigente, per chi non si accontentava, probabilmente l’unica situazione veneta che si avvicinava ai party underground europei più originali, estremi, non commerciali! L’atmosfera era unica, gli artisti invitati e i “local heroes” hanno dato valore aggiunto al progetto! Le grafiche accattivanti, il design mai scontato ed innovativo, la filosofia che c’era dietro mi hanno fatto entusiasmare nel corso degli anni a questa realtà.

Ricordo ancora certi dischi che sono riuscito a proporre alle serate che mi han visto protagonista: solo a Crispy potevi “osare” e potevi proporre certo sound; a Crispy si dava molta importanza a chi suonava con il vinile, inoltre si valorizzavano le etichette indipendenti locali, nazionali e straniere; Crispy mi ha dato la possibilità di farmi conoscere nella scena italiana e di confrontarmi con dj e artisti del calibro di: Danny Krivit, Dj Sotofett, Mike Huckaby solo per citarne alcuni.

Il mondo della notte è sempre in rapida evoluzione, cambiamento: dieci anni sono volati e sono sicuro che per molti Crispy ha lasciato un segno indelebile; hanno provato anche ad imitarlo, ma essendo unico, non è stato ancora possibile e mai lo sarà! Qualità, passione, dedizione, cultura.
