The Golden Walnuts (2014)

Based on the poem "The Paint" written by Alekos Panagoulis while imprisoned by Greek dictatorship (1967-1974). I am grateful to Andrew Hill for narrating the poem in English. 

The Pain(t)

Olympic Games is a sonic journey through the values of Olympism with the objective to create a recorded story based on the idea of praising and promoting the values of the Olympic Movement, setting out from the finest epitome and most popular expression of it, the Olympic Games. Among the main questions addressed through the work is how different agents of narration (taken from different historical audio recordings from different times and years) could be utilised and become a homogenous form. 
My artistic aim is the representation of values that are—or should be—related to everyday experience. The aim of the piece is to transmit a message based on the three main values of the Olympic Movement: Excellence, Friendship and Respect, as well as to underline darker sides of human activity as expressed in Olympic Games. 
An additional intention for this work is to enrich the field of acousmatic repertoire in respect to themes as well as to broaden it since it is be the first time in the history of the field that a work with a theme regarding the Olympic Games and its history, and values has been composed.

This set is the result of a 3 day residency at the STEIM studio in October 2018.
The sound material is based exclusively on recordings of STEIM's analog synthesizers collection.

Live set - STEIM 04/10/18 (Excerpt)

For positive organ, one player and four tuners.
The poetry of frequency beating. An almost electronic sound, produced only from the baroque, positive - also known as portative or chest - organ, used mostly for basso continuo. Patterns and alterations of beatings in unison, in chords or in clusters, in multiple layers.

Recorded live in the Royal Conservatorium of The Hague, during the concerts of the Spring Festival 2013. The organ used is a Klop in 440Hz, with 3 registers and split keyboard.
