The Battle of Bannockburn took place on 24th June 1314. King Robert the Bruce of Scotland defeated and humiliated the English King Edward. This victory secured the throne for Robert Bruce (rather than his rival, John Baliol) and independence for Scotland. Although the Scots were outnumbered by 3 to 1, Bruce, through outstanding bravery and amazing tactics, led the Scots to victory.
 The Battle of Bannockburn remains to this day one of the most important victories over the English in all of Scottish history. The 700th year anniversary of the battle will take place in 2014.

Bannockburn

On 14th May 1752, Colin Campbell, the government appointed factor, was shot dead by a marksman near Ballachulish. Campbell was in fact involved in ethnic cleansing. His job was to remove Stewarts from their homes and replace them with Campbells. James Stewart (from the Stewarts of Appin) was arrested for the murder, even though he had a cast iron alibi. The presiding judge, Archibald Campbell, 3rd Duke of Argyll, knew that James Stewart was innocent, but he knew that James knew who did commit the murder. The other Stewart clan members also knew who did it, but neither James nor anyone else spoke up. The real murderer, Donald Stewart, wanted to hand himself in, but was held back from doing so. James was hanged on 8th November 1752 for the murder and was left to rot for many months. When he was eventually cut down, Donald Stewart was told to wash his bones before he was buried. There is still an active campaign continuing today for James Stewart to be pardoned. The shooting became known as “The Appin Murder”.
