after thinking about it, yeah, this does make more sense than sans being in the mettaton role. he's universally beloved sure, but that universal beloving comes from the portrayal of him standing as the hand of justice that opposes the human

How interesting! My money was most certainly set upon Sans in the role of Mettaton–though I suppose Undyne isn't too out there, especially due to the popularity of Edgy Sans AU games. That being said, I wonder who'll take Mettaton's role. Maybe Toriel? She's quite popular, eh? A whole tag was requested by Toby Fox largely due to art of her.

Fanontale is an AU that takes inspiration from Undertale fanon perceptions by using it to influence the roles the beloved characters take, as well as manifesting in-universe, affecting the characters and their stories.
This is not an Undertale AU about "What if Undertale fanon was good", but rather one that seeks to answer the question of "what if fanon perceptions had direct consequences for the lives these characters live?"

Sans takes Undyne's role. He's a laidback stand-up comedian, who's adored by all of the underground for his uplifting sense of humour and his down to earth style. It's really what people need in these trying times. While he typically outranks any other star in popularity by a long shot, with crowds forming when there's even a rumour of him going out in public, it seems his reign has come to an end.

Watch Chara, the fallen a̶n̶g̶e̶l̶ human, have to fight their way out of these perceptions and distortions, and maybe uncover the truest version of themselves along the way.
