It has been all quiet on the Optimo Music front recently while energy has been devoted to the launch of Optimo Trax but do not fear, there are a plethora of scintillating releases in the pipeline for 2014.

First up is a stormtrooper of an EP from The Twins. We first met The Twins when they were hanging out in Glasgow before they were twins and were simply known as Julienne Dessagne. By the time our paths had crossed in various European capital cities they had fully developed their Twin like tendencies. A mutual appreciation was born and out of that came the suggestion that The Twins might make a record for Optimo Music. The resulting three tracks far exceeded our wildest expectations and we are incredibly proud to be presenting this Twins magnum opus to the world. Haunting, forceful, transcendent music with spine tingling vocals this EP has perhaps a tad more dancefloor capability than many Optimo Music releases but is also a record equally capable of giving your ears a lot of loving at home. 

It was hard to pick one track to showcase the EP but this one is the one that has perhaps been tested out on the dance floor the most and always results in people clamouring to know what it is. The kind of track that completely changes the atmosphere in a club and often results in spontaneous cheering, it has been mixed to perfection by The Twins ally, Superpitcher who will be releasing their debut album on his and Rebolledo's Hippie Dance label.

Expect Twins live shows in 2014.

For this week’s episode of the FMB mixtape series, we welcome Julienne Dessagne aka Fantastic Twins; the Berlin-based French artist, producer, live performer and label owner (Microdosing). As usual we fired some questions over to find out a bit about the mix & what she’s been up to recently:

Mainly traveling for my live shows and in between working in the studio on lots of exciting projects – a soundtrack for contemporary dance, adding the last touches to my album, finishing an EP, and a new collaboration with Andrei Rusu (1/2 of the Khidja duo)… amongst other things. 

The mix was recorded in my studio in Berlin. My focus has always been on producing music and performing live shows rather than DJing so I have learnt to find my own way of making mixes which isn’t exactly the standard DJ approach. I use mainly Ableton and some outboard effect units. After selecting the music and digitalising vinyls when needed, I put the tracks in a session and do quite a lot of editing, add some layers of my own recorded material or vocals here and there, process some bits through external effects, etc. My mix is ultimately an instinctive assembling of all that and some happy accidents. The idea behind the mix is hopefully to create emotion for the listeners. I personally don’t enjoy mixes that sound like a straight motorway from start to finish. I much prefer to be taken through highs, lows and unexpected turns. I approach mixes in a very similar way to my live sets. For this particular mix, I liked the idea of starting things on what sounds like the fading end of something else. And building anew from there, in full circle.

Some upcoming live shows this weekend in Paris, Prague, a Mexican tour in December, an endless list of projects to finish in the studio, and I’m also looking forward to diving into the visual / art direction research for my new album which will hopefully be released next year.

FMB Mixtape 198 by Fantastic Twins

"46cm Hole In Her Cell” is a collection of tracks drawn from Fantastic Twins’ experimentation when performing live.
This new EP features material she created using her modular euro-rack system, sampler and sequencers, vocal cut-ups, some analogue synths and digital effects.

I see my live set as a laboratory of ideas, multiple sounds and sequences that combine into a different puzzle every time I play. Most of that material eventually vanishes into thin air as new sonic moods arise. Very often the music I play live doesn't get formed for release like this, as I find a lot of joy sharing it with an audience, only present in that moment of the performance.
This EP is an attempt to catch some of these pieces of music, and project these moments, before they have evaporated. It felt like running after fugitives, outlaws bound to escape. Perilous, risky and adrenaline-heavy. - Fantastic Twins

Fantastic Twins, the ongoing project of Julienne Dessagne, is a sonic exploration of dual characters born from one distinct perspective. A producer, songwriter, and acclaimed live performer, Dessagne has spent the last decade sculpting a unique world.

On an ambitious new album entitled ‘Two Is Not a Number’, Dessagne immerses herself more fully than ever in the concept that inspired her artist name, exploring the entwined lives and fates of her imaginary twins, their schizophrenic dreams, small dramas, and big tragedies - a metaphor for our own psyche, our inner conflicts, and our relationship to others and otherness.

These musings on the psychological, emotional, biological, and metaphysical qualities of Twins are expressed with assured clarity, using a palate of icy deep techno, eerie atmospheric soundtracks, tranced-out dark wave, and synth pop-noir. Whether through airborne dancefloor ascension, diamond hard rhythms, electronic thundercracks, or empathy drenched vocals and the palpable sense of unease, this standout album brings Dessagne’s powerful, affecting art into sharp focus.

'I Was First' takes listeners to the Fantastic Twins’ origin, a vocal transmission from within a sonic womb, as our protagonists prepare to emerge. 'Sisters at Odds' sees our siblings emerge incongruous and freshly awoken to life’s absurdities in slow-motion. Suspensefully, the percussive heartbeat of Land of 'Pleasure Hi Fi' wrings tension from numerology, blossoming into a scorched industrial ballet, a mirage of multiplicity.

Following the gothic connection of 'Master & Disciple', 'Silver Moon Dial' incants a trance-like state that captures the physical energy of Dessagne’s live show, as Fantastic Twins take advantage of ‘putting the moon on speed dial.’ Euphoria soon splinters into tragedy with 'Twins Can’t Love', extracting unexpected melody and melancholy in brittle, IDM tinged electronics, beautifully tangled with Dessagne’s longing intonations.

'From Above' sees Dessagne’s vocals once again shift into a new form for a haunting interpretation of something approaching a ballad, echoing around a chamber from which the Twins have seemingly disappeared. Ultimately 'All of This is Resolved', both in title and form, within this album’s cathartic yet uneasy conclusion. Dessagne sends the siblings home at last... But what will we find if we follow?

Optimo Music is delighted to release a first album by Fantastic Twins (formerly known as The Twins). We’ll let them tell you the story behind this inspired and beguiling record - 

Obakodomo (Au Balcon Du Monde) is a soundtrack I created for a piece of contemporary dance, performed by two dancers for a young audience from the age of 4. It is the story of an imaginary journey in Antartica where two explorers go on an adventure. They encounter a colony of penguins and will progressively learn to understand their habits and respect their environment. Essentially, Au Balcon Du Monde is a metaphor of how to exist next to each other, how to share a territory, how to learn to live together and share resources. 

The scenography and stage accessories were designed in a minimalistic and non-obvious form to leave all the space for imagination. The penguins were made of translucent material to provide light effects and were programmed to move in a swaying motion, allowing interaction with the dancers and the music. LED system could be wireless piloted. 

With the soundtrack, I wanted to create an atmosphere that would immediately transport the children into this terra nova - a poetical space, like a cold sphere, where the strange meets the frightening and the playful. Translating the immense vs the small, the far-off vs the near, the collective vs the individual, the strange vs the familiar or the cold vs the heat. My intention was to follow the thread of the story in a narrative, yet non-caricatural way. Music for children doesn’t have to be “childish”. Children love to be scared or even just challenged. They love to love and react instantly to what they hear through their emotions. Ultimately, the soundtrack aims to provide different levels of “reading” so that it becomes something more universal. So we, adults, just have to accept the invitation.

The fourth AF Trax release is a three track EP from our long time ally The Fantastic Twins, who has the following to say about her EP - 

This EP is a small collection of works I crafted over the past couple of years in the process of working on my live show. I have been performing versions of these tracks countless times and yet never played them twice the same way. To me, they have been material in constant motion, so shaping them into a “finished” form was a risky challenge. Something I was also wary of - would it mean they would become set in stone? Would it mean I’d have to somehow “rationalise" the music - via the mind - as opposed to letting it run into the wildness of its physical live experiences? 

Whilst editing these tracks into a format that could be released, I realised that instead of shaping them into the mould my mind first intended to give them, I could in fact use the power they revealed each time I performed them to an audience and inject some of that energy - as much as it is possible to capture and recreate it in the studio - back into this EP. Then of course, it meant letting go on things I usually like to control more, and better. 

But isn’t it the power of music to let it take you where you didn’t plan to go? And how incomplete would the music be if our inspiration didn’t feed off the collective experience of dancing to music together? I’ve lost myself (and my twins) many times throughout the process - not only on German soil - I have sometimes landed in the wrong place, but I may have found one answer yet in the form of another question. Why are we here if we can’t dance?

That reminds me of the words of Pina Bausch “Dance, dance or we are lost”. Lost in our internal struggles as individuals (or imaginary twins). Lost in a society where our relation to the other is often marked by fear, power or violence. We feel the need to resist. Yet nowadays, taking a political stance as an artist is too often being instrumentalised as another tactics or accessory to gather more popularity, reducing the political message to nothing else but a branding attempt. Isn’t it anyway the power of capitalism to assimilate everything, even contradictory or once-upon-a-time subversive voices? All to end up on a “Rave” or “Feminist” H&M t-shirt. Slogans that have been emptied of their initial force and substance, now replaced by their commercial value. I strongly doubt that more empty words poured in vain on social media will help us much. But, like Pina Bausch, like JD Twitch, I have always firmly believed in dancing as a physical, social and fundamental act that leads us to share a common space with others and embrace otherness. Standing together, dancing together when everything else forces us to divide. 

May the music on this EP be, I hope, a possible answer to its own title.

Microdosing will provide you with sonic healing weapons on regular basis and at irregular dosage. Those doses will favour psychedelic social techniques against self help tyranny, creation over soma, provoking over numbing, our outer-selves over our inner-selves.

Fantastic Twins reverses the common narcissistic discourse (when surface meets void). The bill is high when one artificially connects to nature. Never forget that pigs will always like mud and wasps will always sting. 

It’s only after a third hit that DMT kicks into your system. Close your eyelids and meet Naum Gabo’s ‘Raze’, where sound, geometry and colour spell F R E E D O M, psychedelia as an anarchic art form. You are in your own center, a place so often famed yet so rarely visited. 

Coming down, Smagghe & Cross will drag you into the black hole where flowers don’t grow. ‘Song For Noddy’ ties the rope around your neck, better live dying than die trying. Fantastic Twins’ voice is just a medusa calling in for more victims. As Current 93’s David Tibet once sung “This ain’t the summer of Love. This is the night we ride”.

We at Microdosing will make Opportunity’s famous last words fully ours. Some would see these as an epitaph on a black screen, we embrace them as a reclaimed fragility. Are we grains of sand wandering in space, hoping for a goal? No. We are the cosmos, the cosmos is us, unafraid of the
end, unafraid of the void.

Before the rise of the infinite silence, Microdosing brings you new guiding lights, white sun or black hole being a simple permutation of the kinetic rainbow.

Oceanic’s “Parallel Lines Of Stripes” is a meandering mantra, an synthesised Moebius ring, a mission to your heart, that furthest star in the sky.

Gilb’R’s “Cosmogonie” simply reminds us of the profound relation between spatial systems and the holy act of birth (cosmo, world and gon, conceive). The universe is a body, your body is your universe.

Lucas Croon’s “Threshold Stimulus” is the soundtrack of a never ending voyage, the man is on a trip to the core sanctum. Imagine Space as a reverberation room cladded with bakelite. Losing yourself in delay repeats sometimes is the shortest way.

Neuzeitliche Bodenbeläge & Sam Irl’s “Faeden” is another hymn to the umbilical chords joining us to the outer world, a black monolith of kraut acid, a pagan dance as portal to a destination only you can choose.

Microdosing will be back soon with more enablers, helping to turn your petty struggles into a search for a meaning of life.
