"Drawing on real-life details from the early days of the American space program, “Number 85” tells the story of one remarkable NASA employee, a chimpanzee named Enos. While the idea of a chimp astronaut may inspire images of cuteness, the swirling synths and sadness-tinged vocals hint at a darker story of fear and lack of control, much in the same way as Alphaville’s “Forever Young.” The NASA employed ape had, of course, little say in the matter of becoming an astronaut, and there is a particular resonance with modern life and the difficulty of choice in our lives: We are all, one way or another, riding a rocket."

“Just Lovers” is about the type of romance a teenager might experience on summer vacation 1988. The music evokes a rushed exuberance, while the lyrics hint toward the ephemeral love that two people experience when they know their time together has an expiration date. Young love always has two major drawbacks: it’s probably not forever, and it’s probably going to hurt. “Just Lovers” addresses these themes, as well as the keen sense that you might want more, even though you know you can’t have it:
Pray eternity won’t ever come for me/I wanna stick around for the summer/ See this moment through/ And feel the weight of two/ And assume we’re more than just lovers
I wrote the lyrics with long-time writing partner, James Walsh. I tracked most of the instrumentation at my home studio in Brooklyn, NY. Brian Stanley played the driving, picked bass line, tracking his part in a hotel room somewhere in Eastern Europe. Brian plays with L.A. based band The Years, as well as American singer-songwriter, LP. Michael McInnis mixed the tracks at Michael McInnis Productions in Portland, Maine.

Just Lovers

As a songwriter, my creative process exists on a spectrum. Often, songs require endless hours of fine-tuning, but sometimes a song pops out effortlessly. “Hard to Quit” is one of those songs that popped right out.

The timing probably helped. Aside from the strings, the Mellotron, and a few vocal patches, I wrote and recorded nearly everything in one afternoon after splitting up with my boyfriend of over two years. It was my first queer relationship, and first times always leave a mark. I cried while writing many of the lyrics for “Hard to Quit,” so the writing process was very therapeutic for me. And even though I wrote the song in the aftermath of a break-up, I wouldn’t consider the song sad. In fact, some lines are meant to come off as humorous, because I felt like the song needed to be funny. It reflects more of who I am. Afterward, I could have gone back and strengthened the words a bit, made it more poetic and less rough, but I liked how raw and juvenile the song sounded. There’s an honesty to emotional rawness that I tried to capture.

Fantazmz is the name Singer/Songwriter David Gagne uses to transmit his brand of nostalgia-inducing synth-pop throughout the multiverse.

In 2017 David began developing a sound inspired by his passionate journey with various musical genres. At this time he was revisiting a collection of his older works with more traditional folk and rock characteristics. After completing an album of his past songwriting ideas, David scrapped that album, to follow his creative impulse to write something new. He wrote and released Pentamorous, a collection of Synthwave/Electro pop songs that has served as the bedrock of Fantazmz. From this, a new album has emerged and is scheduled for release Summer 2019.

Other Works by David Gagne include, EastWave Radio and Post Provost. David also serves as Producer and Guitarist for Brooklyn based band HoloMovment.
