‘Better’ paints a poignant, painful, but soulful picture of two people falling in and out of love. The song follows a young man allowing his insecurities to eat away at a steadily declining relationship, in which he converses and confesses his inner thoughts and feelings with himself as a result of his own infidelity. With a modern contemporary R&B sound, Diedrick weaves his smooth, deep and soft vocal tones throughout the song creating a warm yet soft vibe.



Producer and songwriter J Warner’s expert knowledge of songwriting - he’s worked with the likes of Stormzy, SG Lewis, Snoh Aalegra, Mahalia and Joy Crookes to name a few - really shines through on this fervent record. The self-deprecation lingers heavily in the lyricism of the song, complementing such beautiful melodies and vocals that the intensity of the lyrics almost goes unnoticed. ‘You know better / Cause you’re better than me’ and ‘I’d rather hear you scream at me / Then endure the silence’ perfectly encompass the contradictions and conflicts that come with toxic love. ‘We’ve both been love blind / heartbreak was the first crime / and the last time’.

Growing up on a diet of musical influences from Celine Dion and Mariah Carey to Mario and Usher, soul is non-negotiable in the formula of Diedrick’s rich ballad. With a beautiful baritone voice to express these hard-hitting realisations and regret forcefully tug at the heartstrings, the young musician finds a way to make you feel heard and understood, effortlessly.

The story of Better is visually sound too; accompanied by a nostalgic music video directed and shot by an all-female team spearheaded by director Claryn Chong. Chopping between the gravity of what was and what is, viewers are left pondering on the what if - the perfect ingredients for a bittersweet coming-of-age love tale.
