Fareeq el Atrash - 'Al Mawjeh el Tarsha

A one hour story made especially for recordat #0031 by @checkpoint303, aired first on May 15th, 2021 as part of the Sonic Liberation Front on @radioalhara, an initiative for Palestine by a group of audio platforms and sound artists who came together to unify their sound for Palestine and protest against the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people.

Using site recordings predominantly from Palestine and the Arab world, Checkpoint 303 constructs soundscapes that weave cinematic audio with experimental sound processing and complex rhythms. Through its compositions, collected sounds and noise, Checkpoint 303 spreads a message of peace and a call for the respect of human rights. Contrasting with the mainstream media's exclusive depiction of violence and suffering in the middle-east, CP-303's sound collages also report on the heroic hope that subsists in the region as well as the seemingly banal but ever so meaningful little things that embody a daily search for normality in a state of emergency.

This is the 31st session of a series of sessions Recordat is hosting on Radio Alhara every other Sunday.

'Meet Me in Beirut' is Hadi Zeidan's 4th solo album.
Featuring eight tracks and a bonus cut, the album is a musical examination of scenes lived or imagined by the artist in his home city Beirut.

Compositions span from kraut-inspired patterns to garage rock, bellydance noise and a synth maqam solo, in a quest to emancipate Zeidan's work from the normative genres.

PURP BAXV - Diamante Purpura

New from the Another Music imprint is a collection of twisted beats from London-based producer, Beatoven. Beatoven’s musical credits include Diverted, a breakbeat outfit known for their long-running monthly live band residency at Cargo, and a three-piece electronica project called LAskA. His music has seen him tour across countries such as Australia, Spain, Russia, Hungary and the US.

On ‘Tangled’, his first release on Another Music, Beatoven plays with both hard and soft textures. This is music made out of tough beats and gauzy melody. This is music to fill your headphones on a bright spring day.

“I guess I would describe my sound as weighty beat-led music with deep bass, intricate rhythms and interwoven textures and synth lines all writhing around in a sea of uncomfortable anticipation.”

The glitch comes fast and heavy in the tracks ‘Tangled,’, ‘A Silent and White’, ‘Falstaf’, and ‘Ground Born’, before falling away to reveal a soft centre on ‘So Cold’. The track features the vocal stylings of Amy Hiller, a long time collaborator who also works with the producer on the LAskA project. The other notable vocal contribution on the E.P. is from Palestinian MC Boikutt (Tashweesh/Ramallah Underground), on the brash ‘Falstaf’.
