Safari IV

Bucky Skank is my hobby. I've loved Jamaican and Jamaican inspired / influenced music for nearly my whole musical life. I don't consider myself an expert in any way but over the years I have amassed quite a lot of this music and it is one of a very few forms of music I can listen to all day without getting bored.

I have played about a half dozen full sets of this music and it has been like learning how to dj all over again. All those sets had a slightly shambolic edge to them as I found my feet but have been wonderful, if nerve wracking fun as I scrambled in the dark to find the right 7" to play next. It's definitely not something I'd like to do all the time but doing it one or two times a year is a true joy, so a big thanks to those who have come along and danced. 

There is also the Bucky Skank label, again very much a hobby which releases a couple of 12"s each year (the first one now sold out, the second one due shortly).

Anyway, here's a two hour mix featuring some of what I played at this year's Bucky Skank in Glasgow. Half of it was recorded on the night and half after the fact, at home. Hopefully the joins aren't too noticeable. A tiny handful of the tracks were on the mix I put up a couple of years ago (The Upsetters' "Bucky Skank" will of course appear in every Bucky Skank set I do and bookends this mix albeit in different versions). if you are looking for totally obscure, ultra rare Jamaican music, this is probably not for you but if you want to hear some of the myriad sounds that have come out of that small island or that it has inspired, hopefully it will be enjoyable; plenty of hits and lots of personal favourites from across 50 years (1964 - 2014), ranging from Barrington Levy, Bim Sherman, Prince Far I and Tenor Saw to Kahn, Cutty Ranks and Lady Saw.

The mix is "augmented" with my dub siren, some space echo and Maschine being used to trigger some additional sounds and samples.

The mix is a little over two hours long, is a downloadable 256kbps mp3 and is 230mb.

International Feel's founder Mark Barrott and the loveable Mr Gerd Janson and his Tuff City partner Philip Lauer were enjoying a meal at Barrot's Ibizan hideaway. During said meal Mark somehow agreed to gift his unused Studio Electronics ´Boomstar 303´ synth. The Tuff City guys then thought it would be nice to repay the loan with a remix for Mark, which eventually turned into a full collaboration and this resulting EP. 

Keep an eye out for when it hits shelves on Nov 10th.

Especial welcomes Junior Fairplay to the roster with diverse EP of music for the feet and mind.    Moving forward but looking back is part of our mandate and this release opitmises that outlook.   A forward looking, snapshot back to a moment in British (rave) culture history is explored and reborn with typical Fairplay results.

Strange happenings are going on down at Scrutton Street, EC1.    With release after release cementing the names of those based or working out of the studio bunker, a desire for pushing the boundaries of electronic music is primary with little concern for what’s hip. 

If anyone can Tim can and here with his newly birthed pseudonym comes Junior Fairplay.   With a one-sided release and remix to his name on Crimes Of The Future, offering a glimpse of what’s in store, How Do You Like Me Now? gives it straight.   

Pioneering while nodding back to the British techno of early Black Dog, Reload, Stasis and of course, the seminal “Selected Works” clearly inspires, but so too does one of those musical moments where genres clash, tear and stretch as something new is being born.   

It all starts with the uplifting House anthem of Classic Version, eschewing the oft-tasted horror stylings and aims direct for that 4am MDMA airfield rush, before the EP drops, locks and spins on it’s axis, with 3 pure breaks cuts to overload the senses and say, now is the time!  

A voyage to another side to the mythical lost chord via a moment in time where open fields, abandoned warehouses, the kick of 4/4 house, hip hop breaks and the dub of sound system culture merged but for a short while.   Not house, not rave or jungle.   A proto sound born of blood, sweat and Rage.    


B2. Wave Men

After several months of healthy creative outbursts, locked up in the studio, rocking their guts out for the new album recordings, Rat and José got a little tempted to have a little party. And then another one and one more and one more and…
Well, let´s just say that José´s day job came in handy again, his old connections in the drug dealing business boosted up the evenings. Or how should we put it more gently?: It's been more drugs than sex and rock n'roll for Rat Salad lately. And who could blame them? If you were to be consuming every possible kind of opiate, spiced with ditto hallucinogens for a couple of months, with an additional diet purely consisting of dairy-products and muffins, you'd be pretty sedated too I guess? Not to even mention getting it up, or playing a friggin´ guitar?

Well, during those hazy couple of months, our two heroes at least managed to record this mix before they went into rehab. It was made during one of their most narc-o-ed-out parties, that was held in their home-studio. A smoky old industrial hall down by the docks. The whole menu was served. From uppers and downers to the more mind-expanding dishes. José and Rat took turns by the turntables, all depending on who was the most fucked-up to handle the task. There were quite a bit of freakish dancing going on but mostly during the first part of the set…but after a while the entire crowd were sunk to the floor, tripping out to whatever visions appearing in the concrete ceiling. 

This mix actually reflects this diverse intake of substances. You will experience everything from suicide-esque coke-mania and gritty heroin-punk to cosmic krautrock and space rock to tripped-out psychedelia and hippie-dreams. An enchanting trip through the far out lands of narcotic rock.

So fire up that doobie, drop that tab. Get baked. Get toasted. Tune in an trip out!

Chris Coco has been working as a DJ since the acid house explosion of the late 80s.

He has edited DJ magazine, worked for BBC Radio 1 on the afterhours show The Blue Room. He has made artist albums for Warp and Distinctive Records. He has made compilations for Playboy, Ministry of Sound, EMI Classical and Trojan Records. His music has appeared on many compilations including the big ones, Cafe Del Mar and Hotel Costes. His music has been featured Sex and the City, Nip Tuck, House and many other TV shows.

He currently broadcasts and syndicates a weekly electronic music radio show called Melodica and runs his label, Melodica Recordings, out of his studio/office in London.

His music style has developed from those original house beginnings and draws on those years of experience. His club/festival/party sets are mainly proper house featuring the best of the current releases and a selection of classics with a little slo mo disco and a few eclectic surprises thrown in. His sunset/beach sets are more laid back and eclectic, and are also something special.

Farfara are a three-piece originating from Istanbul, who have been playing together since their early teenage years. A host of bedroom recordings, live shows and an unquenchable thirst for improvisation has seen the band develop from their early days of shoegaze and ambient rock to a more psychedelic kraut-driven sound. Ethereal guitar effects mix with drums, bass and synths to create an all-encompassing, visceral experience.
