In this mixtape I played a lot with some field recordings, and resampling.
It's the first podcast on my channel and I am going a bit away from my usual sound and try something slightly more aggressive, with more darkness to it. 
The track selection is mainly inspired by what I am playing in recent gigs.

Wow what an experience !! 

I was invited to play last week at the amazing Underworld, main stage of Kiez Burn, and ended up playing something very different to my usual sound.

While I am supposed to play right after the burn and open for @elias-dore, due to some typical burner schedule, I arrive to the floor and see a huge crowd, pumped on full energy 155 bpm forest psy trance.. 
So I decided to play differently and go straight to high energy music..

Although that is not my usual sound and atmosphere, I had such an amazing time playing different music, ranging from 135 to 145bpm and got such beautiful feedback from an amazing floor. 
Speechless..

Unsere Nr. 238 kommt heute von einem spannenden, französischen Künstler, den es, wie viele andere, ins globale Zentrum der elektronischen Musik nach Berlin verschlagen hat. Dort machte er sich innerhalb kürzester Zeit mit seinem hypnotischen Downbeat Style einen Namen. Darüber hinaus ist er Mitgründer des aufstrebenden Labels Crepite (https://soundcloud.com/crepitecollective), einer Berlin / Paris Connection, die ohne Witz nur vorzügliche Releases veröffentlichen. 

Die Rede ist von Farn aka Quentin. Einem Musikliebhaber der langsamen Sorte, welcher in seinen Berliner Anfängen rund sieben Jahre her besonders durch uns (Danke an dieser Stelle), Amselcom (https://soundcloud.com/amselcom) und Laut&Luise (https://soundcloud.com/lautundluise) geprägt wurde. Auch die bekannten SOMETHING SLOW (https://soundcloud.com/somethingslow) Events im Beate Uwe (https://soundcloud.com/beateuwe) verzückten und inspirierten ihn in seinem Schaffensdrang. Kein Wunder dass er neben dem DJ’ing dann auch selbst anfing zu produzieren. Ich erinnere mich noch sehr gut an seine beeindruckende Premiere „Levitum“ (https://soundcloud.com/afterhour-sounds/premiere-farn-levitum-original-mix-crepite?in=afterhour-sounds/sets/premiere) bei uns, die mich vollkommen in den Bann zog und immer noch tut. Ich merkte sofort, dieser Kerl hat das gewisse etwas in seinem Sound. Nämlich tiefe, träumerische und gleichzeitig druckvolle Momente. Definitiv ein Qualitätsmerkmal seines Sounds, welcher sich sowohl in den Releases auf Crepite, als auch in seinen Mixen widerspiegelt. 

Kein Wunder, dass mich das für uns aufgenommene Set direkt in den Bann gezogen hat. Der Beat, die Flächen und die leicht düstere Stimmung entführen einen definitiv ohne Umwege aus dem Alltag hin zu einer nebeligen Sommerwiese frühs morgens zum Sonnenaufgang im wunderschönen Grün. Dabei bewegt er sich gekonnt irgendwo zwischen Tanz und Traum, Druck und Leichtigkeit, aber alles mit einer hypnotischen Aura versehen. Für ihn ist Downtempo definitiv keine Chillout Musik mehr, sondern ein Raum des Experimentierens. Nämlich verschiedene Subgenres miteinander zu verbinden und eine große BPM Range an den Tag zu legen. Jeder Hörer und Tänzer soll hierbei nie den Eindruck bekommen, dass er wüsste, was als nächstes folgt. Dies ist ihm sehr wichtig. Was er damit nun konkret meint, könnt ihr in seinem absolut einzigartigen und fesselnden Podcast bei uns hören. Ich sage nur Minute 35…. Ein absoluter Hörgenuss, ohne Übertreibung. Aber hört und entscheidet selber. Für mich definitiv eines dieser Podcasts, welchen ich mir definitiv noch unzählige Male anhören werden. Bestimmt auch in zehn Jahren. Dies bin ich mir sichser. Ganz nebenbei überzeugt die Aufnahme durch eine Playlist der Superlative. Neben einigen, kommenden Releases auf Crepite, haben sich weitere, mir teils unbekannte Dancefloor Weapon’s von anderen Labels und auch einige Stücke aus seinem Klassiker Ordner in den Podcast geschlichen. Ich erahne jetzt schon das ein oder andere „Track ID?“ Kommentar…

Schnallt euch an… Ich kann mich nur wiederholen, aber es erwartet euch eine Reise, die wie gemacht für eine Afterhour ist. Keine Phrase, keine Fake-News, sondern ehrliche Worte eines musikverliebten Spessarters.

Ich danke dir vielmals Quentin für dieses besondere Set. Umwerfend nachttraumtanzbar und erfrischend gut. Chapeu.

Farn presents "Transcendance" Afterhour Sounds Podcast Nr. 238

Few weeks ago, I was invited to play at Opal, in Normandie and the whole event has been an exceptional experience :) 
Opal is a really open-heart place, with so much positive energy going around and a real community sense. Everyone contributes to create magic and to have a special moment. 

I was playing on Saturday night at 11PM, and I knew that the crowd was not very familiar with that type of sound, and that bpm range. Which is something I love when playing abroad :) 

After a long intro to help landing in electronic music after some live concerts, the first part goes quickly to some drivy edits and more progressive sounds to get the crowd going, and buy into that vibe. It then continues to a more edgy and mellow part of the slow spectrum.
The set also reflects well the energy from Opal I guess, warm and playful.

I really enjoy to play in France. It has a quite different vibe compare to Berlin floors, and it is super refreshing ! Thank you <3

Farn // 'Escapade Française' @ Opal 2022

Last week, I was back at Birgit Club in Berlin, for the Burn Night! 

Our Musotopia floor was all set for a full night of alternative/non standard Berlin music, but one day before the event, we got a cancellation from one UK Bass act. 
We decided that I will take the slot, but playing on this floor, I still wanted to try to propose something a bit different and unusual. 
I decided to play a set with a huge bpm range, going constantly up from 80 to 140bpm in 1.5 hours, but still keeping a consistency in terms of sound. 
In my research of having a sound that is more unique and special, this set has been a really fun experiment. 
I was also happily surprised to see that the crowd wasn't completely lost with the bpm rising so fast, and people were on fire.

When exchanging about music, I often hear the belief that there is a strong correlation between the bpm and the energy level. Personally, I really don't think so.. And I think this set is showing it well: no matter the BPM, the energy remains kind of the same -> Deep and dark, with a sliver of freakiness and some psychedelic vibes. 


I hope you will enjoy that slightly unusual set and can feel the fabulous energy from that night with this recording.

I was invited to play at Renate for the easter party organized by Rebellion der Traumer and I had such a great night.
I have been to Rebellion’s event for a long time. For the quality of their music curation but also for the great vibe and crowd that their event always have. Sharing music there was a real gift. 

With my dear Crépite. crew, we took over the red floor for the whole night and it was a big honour to present our music to one of the best crowd in town.  

The music in this set is a bit faster to what I have been playing recently. It explores different sides of the musical spectrum, and a variety of subgenres and BPM, aiming at creating some surprises in my sound in an event where the rest of line up is pretty close to my usual style. I even went for a small minimal techno 20min-interlude in the middle of the set.. <3 

I am super glad to be able to share with you a memory of that night and I hope you will enjoy this set.

Hello friends,

Here is the recording of my set at the Küstenrausch floor at Conscious Madness Festival. 
What a great energy it was ! Thank you so much, I really had a blast with you <3

I played a rather faster set, keeping my usual genre-blending and eclectic selection, this time with a lot of tracks with vocals and a good amount of madness.
I even started the set with an Indie disco track, because why not :) 

This was wonderful weekend in a truly unique and special event! Big thank you Conscious Madness for creating such a special festival and for leaving us the freedom to imagine a space by the lake. 
Co-creating on this stage with @crepitecollective , @beyondcollectiveberlin and @we-kuyen has been a fantastic experience. And big thank you for trusting me with the Saturday closing slot.

Last weekend, this was our debut at Kater Blau for our first Crépite. showcase, and it was a beautiful night. 

This club has been shaping our sound and taste so much and is a place where we have so many good memories. Especially on this Acid Bogen floor. So it was a real big honour this time to be behind the decks and to share our music.

This set from @airka-paris & @farn-berlin is waving between genres. Starting relatively soft, and going quickly to more heavy sounds, before keep exploring the hidden sides of the gems spectrum.

We are very happy to share with you a memory of that night and we hope you will enjoy this set. We felt so much support before, during and after the gig, so we decided to let some of the crowd atmosphere at the end in the recording.

Super happy to share with you this special recording, as it is a faster set than what I usually publish. 

Here is the recording from a night in Humboldthain Club in Berlin where I was invited to play faster music. Going through some Minimal, Psy tech and Deep techno at around 130bpm.
A sound that also defines me and my inspiration a lot, altho the bpm is faster. 
But who said bpm matters anyways?

Playing on a deep playa art car at Burning Man is an unforgettable experience. Starting in the 'town' on a moving art car, going direction deep playa followed by hundreds of bikes around you, to finally arrive in the middle of the desert and see the dance floor filling up. Unique.

This is the reason I wanted to publish this set here, to have a shared memory of that moment. 

When playing abroad, it can be tempting to adapt your selection and to try to fit with the sound the crowd is expecting and used to. I chose to stick to my sound with lot of tracks that I carried with me this whole summer, and altho that set sounds radically different and slower than what you hear at Burning Man and in the USA in general, I received some great feedbacks and I was happy to slowly contribute to the expansion of our cherish sound on this side of the Atlantic.

✔️What are your musical influences? What is your musical background?

I grew up in Paris suburb and it had an impact on my early influences, as I grew up listening mostly to reggae and to french hip hop. These were all my first concerts and ‘in-repeat’ albums, with artists like Lunatic, Salif, Steel pulse or Groundation.
My first closer connection to club music was then with the electronica and minimal house scene in Paris with artists like RPR Soundsystem, Cabanne, Bonobo or Traumprinz . Only later around 2015 I discovered the slower and deeper Berlin sound with firstly artists like Mira, Chris, and then Wide awake or Arutani.
Those are few of my influences throughout the years and artists that have inspired me and had a big impact on the music I am doing now. 

✔️ What makes good “afterhour”?

After hours can have a very unique energy, some sort of magic in the air, a shared energy of kindness and sensitivity. 
At this time, I feel that music becomes an even more important element of the party. People are more open to feel, and to connect deeper with the music.   
It can also be an invitation for the DJ to play a more mental and elegant selection, music with more soul and surprises. 

✔️ Do you have any thoughts you would like to share about your set?

This is a set I played at a label showcase with Crépite., a beautiful summer afternoon at a great outdoor location in East Berlin, the gART.n. 
When I play in a Crépite. showcase, I tend to select music that also represents well the sound from the label as I feel it is important that our signature sound is represented in those events, and that we are the first ambassador. 
This set represents well the brighter side of the Crépite. sound somewhere between elegance, minimalism, deepness and obviously crackling textures :) 
A lot of my favorite tracks of the last few months. 
The set also contains loads of my own field recording samples, which is the direction my DJ sets are taking, an organic hybrid direction with field recordings from nature.

This place, and particularly their Sunday events have been a big inspiration for me since I moved to Berlin almost 10 years ago, and an important place for the slower scene in Berlin.

The linear flow of time folds in on itself, looping and fracturing. What remains is not a clear reflection of the past, but a sensation suspended just beyond reach: elusive, haunting, and quietly insistent.

The night was still dark when I started and the sun was slowly starting to rise, opening to the longest day of the year. I have tried to reflect this gradual light change into my music selection, with the BPM getting slower and the melody brighter progressively with the sun.

For the second year, with my Crepite family, we built a stage in the wood at Crème Brulée festival in France.  A Volière Odyssey

I was invited last weekend to play one last time for this season at the beautiful 'Silent Rixdorf' garden in Neukölln. 
Big thanks to Joni and all the people that makes this garden so special <3

This set contains many tracks I played throughout the whole summer. The evening was such a perfect way to end this season and slowly entering a new cycle.

One day, said the legend, there was a huge forest fire. All of the animals were terrified, grounded, they watched the disaster powerless. Only the small hummingbird did something, to get a few drops of water with its beak to throw on the fire. After a moment, the armadillo, annoyed by this ridiculous agitation, said to him: "Hummingbird! Are you crazy? It is not with a few drops of water that you'll extinguish the fire!" And the hummingbird answered:" I know, but I do my part."

#016: Farn || The Colibri Tale

After a long summer filled with music, open airs and different gatherings, this was my last festival of this very special season. 

It was my 3rd year at Ponyhof, in the wonderful Schloss Schönow, and I am so grateful that I was invited again this year. 
Due to the pandemic, we were gathering only outside in the garden and the whole program had to be adapted. I was playing the sunset slot on Friday evening, after we all reunited in the garden and shared a potluck with friends I haven't seen for a while. This was just perfect <3

Because of the timing, I could start my set with softer tunes to accompany the dusk, and slowly get into groovy and more dancefloor oriented sounds while entering the night. 

This set contains a lot of tracks I carried with me this whole summer.

Farn // Ponyhof 2020

I was invited to the Lusatia Festival, part of a delegation of artists from Kiez Burn  and here is the 30 minutes recording of my part, 2nd story out of the full 3-hour show. 

I shared the stage with my dear Daisy who you can hear spreading her beautiful poems all along the performance. 
This was also an occasion for me to go out of my usual DJ comfort zone! 
Costumes, dance, spoken word,.. all this filmed by 10 cameras ! 

With Kiez Burn artists we wanted to create a true representation of the musical spectrum of Kiez Burn, as well as a representation of the other aspects that make our home burn such a beautiful place: Inclusiveness, ceremony & ritual, radical self-expression, immediacy, among many more.

Track selection is a very interesting exercice when preparing 30 minutes performance.. 
The 6 tracks I chose are all very close to my heart, and all created by artists that I consider some of the best in the scene.

Lusatia teamed up with Birdhouse to create a special festival edition with the mission to draw attention to the situation caused by Covid-19. 
The 36-hour production was filmed in June on Wilde Möhre's festival site in Drebkau. 
They invited 5 festivals to participate: 3000Grad, Bucht der Träumer, Wilde Möhre, Moyn Moyn and Kiez Burn.

While that story is being told, you can see the organic melodies resonating, hear the visuals in your head. Everything seems sharp and detailed, all elements are purposely defined and slowly, your soul is drifting away.
You are engaged in a lucid dream where the irrational is more than welcome.
You start exploring the feelings created by the deepness of the infinite musical spectrum. Everything is limpid.
