By popular demand Far Out is about to re-issue the beautiful and strictly limited deluxe heavy weight vinyl edition of ‘Visions of Dawn’. With Andy Votel’s stunning psychedelic designs dripping from the cover the original ‘lost’ Brazilian acid-folk album is an essential addition to record collections. 

Understated yet powerful this previously unreleased project by three Brazilian music legends has been rescued and released by Joe Davis’ Far Out Recordings. Led by the sharp lyrics and gorgeous, expressive voice and guitar of Joyce the trio is completed by the expert musicianship of her close friends Nana Vasconcelos (percussion) and Mauricio Maestro (electric bass, vocals, guitar and producer) who were both crucial in creating this masterpiece. These beautiful, hazy recordings, which took place among the charming artistic 1970s Paris scene, offer a unique chance to sit in on the original jamming sessions of tracks that later became Brazilian cult classics.
 
“These pictures were taken in 1976 when my partner Mauricio Maestro and I (left)had recently arrived in Paris. We recorded an album there with our friend Nana Vasconcelos (Right), who then lived in France. We were ready for new adventures.  ‘Visions of Dawn’ - in the language of Barack Obama - is taken from the Suite of our 1976 disc. For the album to be more psychedelic would be impossible. This is not a Joyce album this is a work of three heads.” Joyce, 2009  Mauricio, Joyce and Nana became friends as part of Milton Nascimento’s Clube De Esquina scene and his legendary ‘Clube De Esquina’ albums.

The three were also part of Sagrada Familia - the great Luiz Eça band – while Nana and Joyce played together in legendary folk-prog band A Tribo.  Having arranged for Brazil’s top artists from an early age Mauricio Maestro lent his masterful bass playing to Joyce’s classic early albums. Later a founding member of Boca Livre - one of the most successful groups ever to emerge from Brazil - Mauricio produced ‘Visions of Dawn’ and his incredible electric bass and vocals are crucial to the sessions. Nana Vasconcelos has released more than thirty albums over an epic forty year career. Vasconcelos is a vocalist and berimbau player of immense quality and here displays his unsurpassed Latin jazz percussion skills, which adds playful samba momentum to this project. Joyce recorded her first album at the age of nineteen and alongside Tropicalia artists of the time she infused conservative Brazilian music with the spirit of 60s counter-culture, creating bossa nova with a feminist edge that gave Brazilian women their voice. Joyce is now one of the most respected artists in Brazil with her compositions interpreted by Brazilian greats Milton Nasciemento, Elis Regina, Gal Costa and Gilberto Gil.   

Here Joyce’s tender psychedelic vocals (‘Clareana’, ‘Jardim Dos Deuses’, ‘Chegada’) result in a dreamy set that’s given a strong edge when scatting and letting her notes playfully jump around (‘Suite’, ‘Banana’, ‘Metralhadeira’). Creativity flows out from behind Joyce’s Paris boudoir drapes for 35 glorious minutes. Stand out tracks ‘Banana’ and ‘Clareana’ became big Brazilian hits for Joyce on her hugely successful solo albums, which followed on from this recording.  ‘Clareana’ is a beautiful lullaby in homage to her daughters Clara Moreno (Far Out) and Ana, while ‘Banana’ is a slice of pure joy. Ending with the orgasmic ‘Chegada’ this is an album like nothing you’ve ever heard.  

‘Visions of Dawn’ is a legendary lost treasure encapsulating the special freedom and beauty of Joyce, Nana and Mauricio’s music that has finally been rescued and set free after 33 years.

I don't remember the process of making those tracks, but I remember that i wasnt trying to make it sound like anything else. All tracks were made in my last chapters of Kleve, a small town that taught me a lot about time. 

This is not a techno, house, or any familiar sound type of album. Its a story of feeling, from beginning to end, that i was only able to explain with sounds. Its an album that I have been gatekeeping for a while, and I never stopped listening to it since it was made in 2024. If you're curious about what sounds hit my spots, feel free to enjoy to get your mind bent with this melodic journey.

Far Out Recordings was founded in 1994 by London DJ and record producer Joe Davis. His longstanding and insatiable passion for Brazilian music, fuelled by his initial love of the jazz, funk and soul ubiquitous on the Rare Groove scene in 1980s London, took him to Brazil first as a teenager. It was there that his enthusiasm for record-collecting led him to some of his musical heroes and the eventual formation of musical bonds and close friendships. Joe’s early discoveries led to him becoming the UK’s foremost authority on Brazilian music, much of it little-known here before his enthusiastic endorsements began to ring out across the music scene. This led to the inevitable, and the keen young music fan and DJ with an entrepreneurial flair founded Far Out Recordings.

The label’s aim from the start has been to bring the sound of Brazil to the world – to showcase the history and culture of a land bursting with creativity and energy – from the classic to the cutting edge. There have been numerous releases from both new and established Brazilian artists including legends such as Azymuth, Joyce, Marcos Valle, Arthur Verocai, The Ipanemas, Sabrina Malheiros, Clara Moreno and Binario, to name a few. 

Far Out also releases music from musicians and producers around the world who share the label’s appreciation for Brazilian music and culture. Alongside Brazilian music, the label is also well known for its longstanding association with underground dance music, having collaborated with some of the most acclaimed and accomplished electronic producers of our times. This had led to a rich plethora of pioneering and innovative dance and beats music, forging a future for the oft-neglected role of Brazil and its rhythms in the complex dance music diaspora of the UK and US, with 12" remixes and original productions from the likes of Theo Parrish, Mark Pritchard, 4hero, Dego, Andres, Marcellus Pittman, Kirk Degiorgio, Nicola Conte, A.D. Bourke, Henry Wu and Rick Willhite among many others.

Joe's crate-digging mentality has also been the driving force behind another crucial aspect of Far Out's work - unearthing forgotten masterpieces and once impossible to find records. This has led to reissues from the likes of Milton Nascimento and Roberto Quartin’s catalogue of lost gems, resulting in some of the finest Brazilian reissues you’re likely to find. While this remains a relatively small percentage of the label's output, every release is brought to you with the utmost love and care, ensuring painstaking perfection in the realms of sound, aesthetic and physicality.

Many of the artists on the Far Out roster regularly tour worldwide, playing across Europe, the USA and the Far East.
