New Zealander Julien Dyne is a multi-instrumentalist with a long and impressive history of collaborative, live and solo musicianship. He is best known for his solo work as BBE and having worked with the likes of Theo Parrish, Steve Spacek, Andreya Triana and Lord Echo. In addition to this - having remixed the likes of Marcel Vogel, Ghostwave and Leroy Burgess (alongside Frank Booker) - Dyne has also accumulated a number of accolades over the course of a 10-year career including but not exclusive to being hotly tipped by both Moodymann and Gilles Peterson.

Dyne’s new project for 2018 is the 11-track LP, Teal, on Miles Cleret’s legendary Soundway Records. The album, a masterpiece of future soul and afro-percussive house, is more uptempo than what we’re used to from Julien, and it’s a welcome change of pace. The project practically oozes soul while demonstrating Julien’s skills as a multi-instrumentalist and visionary producer. Included are collaborations with fellow New Zealander Mara TK, long term band-mate Ladi6, Fat Freddy’s Drop’s trumpeter Toby Laing, Australian vocalist Tim Guy, and Jazz luminaries Jonathan Crayford and Jon Bell.

While it’s hard not to discuss each track in excruciating detail, we’ll take a look at the second track on the album, “YouYou.” Julien’s synth-work is on display from the jump, as big reverbed hits ring out before the percs start knockin’. This track is a certified vibe-bringer, and if we stripped most of the instrumental away, the bassline alone would cause a ruckus. Playful arpeggios and Julien’s masterful use of delay add so much movement to the track, making it impossible for listeners to get bored. Most impressively, “YouYou” feels like an organized live jam. What more could you want?

As a whole, this is a body of work fit for the dancefloor and for home listening. Double threats like this shouldn’t be missed, so grab the double vinyl and add it to your already impressive collection of tunes. New French label Cosmocities moves into it's 2nd release after the eclectic compilation Cosmocities Records Vol 1 (3 x Vinyl) which featured the likes of Leif, Segue, DJ Maboku, Jaime Read, Inner Science & Jitwam. This time we introduce to you a collaboration between Inkswel & Stan Smith.

A meeting of creative minds formed on mutual respect for each others output, Stan ‘Steam’ Smith and Inkswel connect as ‘Active Ingredients’. Inkswel an electronic music futurist gliding the boundaries between Hip Hop, House Music and Modern Beat culture and Stan Smith an MC who honed his skills in the golden era but has always looked forward with past works produced by Daz-I-Kue (Bugz in The Attic) and Soulparlor. The ‘Middle’ is a refreshing perspective, something that came natural, a collection of songs the team did together over a period of 6 months of sending each other vibes back and forth from Adelaide to Atlanta. With outerwordly cover art by the infamous Tokio Aoyama and remixes from broken beat legend Kaidi Tatham and Soul Of Sydney veteran Edseven, the ‘Middle’ encapsulates the forward thinking evolution of the Hip Hop inspired generation.

Far Out Recordings is delighted to present the debut single from transatlantic pop retroists Limoncello.

In 2017, NYC producer/guitarist Rich Bennett and Paris based Italian Argentine singer/songwriter Mari Rosa started sharing tunes with each other across the pond. Basking in the sounds of Lô Borges, Elis Regina, Steely Dan, and a playlist of early 80s roller rink disco, felt like a form of solace amidst the tense and changing culture around the world. It wasn’t long before the pair decided to write and record some tunes of their own, which in their own words created “a sound that will make you want to lace up your rollerskates”

Sung in Portuguese, the breezy lounge-funk stepper ‘Music Aqui’ cooks up blissful Brazilian beach boogie vibes, and the Spanish sung post-disco love jam ‘Com Tu Amor’ feels uncannily like an early 80s holy grail that’s never been sold on Discogs, it’s difficult to believe it was recorded only last year.

Brand new from Brazil. "Batuque é Reza Forte" showcases the beautiful warmth and energy of Brazil's best kept secret, singer, composer, producer and radio presenter, Arícia Mess. This soulful samba features the voice and a little composing assistance from the legendary  Brazilian singer and composer, Dona Onete, aka  "Queen of Carimbó", and on guitar, Aleh Ferreira, frontman of legendary Brazilian funk band Banda Black Rio. Taken from forthcoming album, 'Versos do Mundo'.

About "Batuque é reza forte", Arícia says: "I have a radio program on internet, I spent the last three years travelling in Europe singing, doing shows and recording interviews in Berlin, Paris, Portugal and London. When I was in London I met Dona Onete for one interview, but she fooled me into it (LOL). She started talking about something else, about my work as a composer, she started singing melodies, saying that she was doing it for me! That is the recording that you hear at the beginning of the song. I ask her: "are you composing this song now?". She replies: "that’s for you!" Then I scream! So, there was no interview, and that's how Batuque is a Strong Prayer was born. I took the parts when she sings and used her voice in the recording (with the freshness of the moment of composition); the rest of the song I composed later while traveling through England. The recording of that moment, when she sings and improvises extracts of the song is what makes Batuque is a strong prayer a jewel."

"Queen of psyco-quilombolas, radical batuques...Afro-shock-chic", Brazilian with righteous black pride, Arícia sings in praise of the natural forces of womanhood, notably the Afro-Brazilian woman. In her own unique way, she recreates the links between Africa and Brazil. Aricia has a peculiar yet powerful, refined and captivating voice.

Far Out Recordings was founded in 1994 by London DJ and record producer Joe Davis. His longstanding and insatiable passion for Brazilian music, fuelled by his initial love of the jazz, funk and soul ubiquitous on the Rare Groove scene in 1980s London, took him to Brazil first as a teenager. It was there that his enthusiasm for record-collecting led him to some of his musical heroes and the eventual formation of musical bonds and close friendships. Joe’s early discoveries led to him becoming the UK’s foremost authority on Brazilian music, much of it little-known here before his enthusiastic endorsements began to ring out across the music scene. This led to the inevitable, and the keen young music fan and DJ with an entrepreneurial flair founded Far Out Recordings.

The label’s aim from the start has been to bring the sound of Brazil to the world – to showcase the history and culture of a land bursting with creativity and energy – from the classic to the cutting edge. There have been numerous releases from both new and established Brazilian artists including legends such as Azymuth, Joyce, Marcos Valle, Arthur Verocai, The Ipanemas, Sabrina Malheiros, Clara Moreno and Binario, to name a few. 

Far Out also releases music from musicians and producers around the world who share the label’s appreciation for Brazilian music and culture. Alongside Brazilian music, the label is also well known for its longstanding association with underground dance music, having collaborated with some of the most acclaimed and accomplished electronic producers of our times. Joe's crate-digging mentality has also been the driving force behind another crucial aspect of Far Out's work - unearthing forgotten masterpieces and once impossible to find records. This has led to reissues from the likes of Milton Nascimento and Roberto Quartin’s catalogue of lost gems, resulting in some of the finest Brazilian reissues you’re likely to find. While this remains a relatively small percentage of the label's output, every release is brought to you with the utmost love and care, ensuring painstaking perfection in the realms of sound, aesthetic and physicality.

Many of the artists on the Far Out roster regularly tour worldwide, playing across Europe, the USA and the Far East. Look out for them in your town, spreading the joy, the warmth and the restless creativity of Brazilian music and all that Far Out seeks to represent. “After more than twenty years of Far Out, we are only just beginning to realise our ambitions” surmises Joe. “We are still learning about production, recording and music, always.. and we are fortunate to be surrounded by the most exciting group of musicians and producers who are making consistently brilliant music.
