@fastatwork is thrilled to welcome Miami-grown multidisciplinary duo @INVT305 to our FAST_CAST mix series. The duo specialize in electronic music and fashion design, and their sound represents a compelling fusion of jungle, techno, UKG, dubstep and various forms of Latin bass music, like Dembow, Cumbia, and Reggaeton. This mix has it all, and is an excerpt from INVT's debut LA performance - an exclusive DJ set at Fast At Work on October 1st, 2022.

Eugenia cut her teeth playing local clubs and throwing DIY events in the San Francisco and East Bay. Her energetic mixing style can be defined as bright, tender, and a highly dynamic, jumping across many genres of dance music wrapped in a lush atmosphere -- with her signature touch of sass. Eugenia is now based in Boston, where she plays with local queer collective Boudoir. Fresh from her sets at HÖR Berlin, Fast at Work in Los Angeles and Boiler Room in Boston, she continues to blossom further and curate her own sound.

This mix is from the second hour of Ayesha's mind-bending set at Fast At Work on March 31 2023. Strap in!

Next up we have a mix from one of LA's brightest DJ community members, Max Ellington (@berrmax). Max is an LA-based DJ with roots in Ann Arbor, MI. Through his VPN Radio show, Surrealchemistry, he has embarked on a mission to explore the power of deep and psychadelic dance music. He's also a resident DJ at the New Palm event series. Some words from Max about the mix: 

"I used this mix as an assignment to break out of a lower tempo zone I've been vibing on lately and grab some faster + most importantly weirder records from the shelf. I tried to find a balance between speed and intensity--moves to higher tempos eventually accompanied by pillowy synths and dubby basslines.. the feeling of accelerating towards a soft landing!"

FAST_CAST 009: Max Ellington

Ringing in the next edition of the FAST_CAST mix series is London-via-NYC DJ @john_x. Currently based in East London, John has spent over a decade in both New York and London scenes, supporting artist communities, DJing and throwing grassroots parties. Some words from John about his mix:

“I tend to favor a sound that is equal parts driving, but also emotive and melodic, in nature. In this instance, I pulled together a collection of tracks that I feel have a certain overarching cinematic quality about them, despite stylistic or genre differences.”

Ariana Gray Bé aka @agraybe is a Los Angeles-based, Cleveland-rooted DJ, singer, dancer, and scientist. An ever-evolving music sharer and tastemaker, Ari is currently a @newpalm resident DJ, organizer for Made to Move LA, and host of the quarterly radio show, Cloud Studies: Music for Gazing. She has also performed, produced, and hosted workshops with the Feminist Synth Lab community. With a DJ style based in versatility, Ari loves to create ebbs and flows of energy and emotion through textured groove and sonic expression.

Certified rave queen and ultimate life of the party @fun2bjane has entered the chat, and she's delivered a stellar mix for FAST_CAST. Find yourself at one of fun2bjane’s sets and you're bound to genre-bounce in between fun, sassy, upbeat house and techno, climbing to trance and breaks; always incorporating an iconic pop vocal or two. A nod to the nostalgia of early-2000s pop-princesses, fun2bjane is quickly becoming a local staple in the Los Angeles circuit.

With deep roots that stretch from ambrosial Kerala to the golden coast of California, CHA CHA’s (@cha-cha-pillai) sound is inspired by purling polyrhythms from cultures beyond the West. Their devotion to tabla, djing, and modular synthesis, guides them through universal sonic spaces.

Mother and sound engineer of Corduroy Garden Soundsystem, CHA CHA organizes hi-fidelity techno-forward experiences in Los Angeles underground. They have worked with crews and curators such as New Palm, Pranks!, Printshop, Vitamin1k, FeM Synth Lab, Acid Camp and United Selector Network.

"With this mix I intend to highlight my everlasting love for cheeky, freaky productions and wormhole bass lines while exploring the mesmerizing technicalities of drum traditions from around the world. The group accepted this music as scripture, and coined it “Soft Fascination,” – naming group member Carré as their chosen matriarch. Through the title hymn “Soft Fascination,” Carré preached a proto vision of a classic dubstep bassline and tender pads. With “Cute Mad,” Carré magically induced a sense of positivity and bubbly bass. And with the third offering, “Glowing,” she pushed her audience closer to understanding simplicity and space. Finally, in an effort to expand their gospel to the furthest realms of their musical world, she recruited Priori and James Bangura to create their own missions, rooted in the original offerings of the alien helicopter’s capsule disc. While Priori expertly rearranged “Soft Fascination” into a shiny mind-melter, James Bangura expanded on the lightness of “Glowing,” creating his own lucid dreamscape of deep melancholia.

Deep within the humdrum of the freeway buzz and eternal traffic of dystopian Los Angeles, there exists an unstoppable sonic gathering of minds, determined to spread a gospel believing that higher BPMs are not necessarily synonymous with harsh escapist mentalities and homogenous vibes. Lately however, as the belief system and community members have musically evolved, there has been some debate about the viability and true existence of this mantra. Is “Fast Not Hard” a sustainable ethos, guiding us towards the ultimate truth?

Just as the issue began to climax, seemingly out of nowhere, a helicopter emerged, containing a capsule from the future (or possibly aliens). Within this capsule was physical, musical, fundamental proof of the durability of their belief system – a bible of sorts, with all the thoughts and debates and beliefs and ideals of the group members mechanically infused into a shiny black disc of three original musical offerings. Upon digesting the capsule’s creed, the group accepted the music as scripture, and coined it “Soft Fascination,” – an emotional reflection of their fast-not-hard form of fundamentalism – and named group member Carré as their first chosen matriarch.

Next up we have a proper journey of a mix from NYC-based DJ Reid Golden. Inspired by sci-fi soundscapes and world-building, his DJ sets take you on an intentional ride. While he gravitates towards electro and other psychedelic sounds, he makes it known that all genres are fair game. Formerly of Denver's staple party crew Send/Receive, he now resides in New York City as a devoted patron of the metropolis' chugging club scene.

Introducing Dreamrdreamr to the FAST_CAST universe! With a variety of releases under her belt @dreamrdreamr productions showcase a fusion of early melodic rave and with her own personal nostalgic memories of sound. On the dancefloor, Dreamrdreamr will play with sound in a unique way to create mesmerising blends of genres from House, Breaks, Techno, and Jungle with undertones of dreamlike states and euphoria.

"Keeping in mind the labels ethos of fast not hard I have chosen to move uptempo in the 140-160 range. I have tapped into some of my favourite tracks that I have been listening too recently plus some forthcoming and new selects. Berlin-based Turkish-born DJ NENE H has become a powerhouse of Berlin's evolving underground identity–blazing a trail for SWANA, Muslim, queer, and female representation. Whether she's sprinkling trap into a peak-time techno set, or obliterating Berghain in her bridal gown–just when you think you've boxed Beste in, she throws you a curveball that hits you square in the face.

“Chop chop chop” – as the distant sound of a rhythmic reckoning grows closer and closer, we as rave disciples in our purest form can be reminded of both the beginning of this story, as well as its current flourishing state. We recall that past scripture speaks of the birth of our beloved helicopter, which contained a sacred capsule from the future (or possibly aliens). While this capsule exists as physical, musical, fundamental proof of the durability of our “FAST NOT HARD” belief system, we know that all systems must morph into new forms and individualized movements.

With this in mind, we praise the emergence of the HOVER CAPSULE – the first of many sub-discs that expand upon the fast-not-hard gospel through a divinely anointed group of master apostles, each with their own distinctly resonant vision of musical ascendance and serenity. On the A side, three separate offerings point to an originalist form of heli-dogma (chop, chop, chop, indeed!), led by first chosen FAW matriarch Carré and her elected counterpart, the legendary phonic guru Addison Groove. Joining them in spreading this up-tempo vision of sonic prayer are rising duo Baalti, and London underground priest Adam Curtain, each delivering a firm yet fluttery hymn of audible togetherness. On the B, the deeper potential of higher tempos displays in its purest and most tangible form. While Ruby May Moon & Emanuel showcase an offering chock full of emotional, poetic intensity, Introspekt churns and chops it up a notch, infusing dissonance with her signature two-step religiosity. Data Plan & 11:68PM round things out, en(capsule)ating the true musical connotation of an ethos that continues to expand and spread – well, hover.

As they landed from an extended hover - Fast At Work found themselves drawn to a new, singular sonic flow. With a future forward vision of higher-deeper tempos, the crew realized that often the most meaningful iterations can be found in the most inconspicuous places - “not even noticed,” some might say. Within these subtle crevices, a rising duo emerged to carry this torch forward, expertly crafting four original offerings. While the title contribution echoes a sermon of oozing bassline flows and siren signals, “Drip Advise” mesmerizes with its spiraling melodies and a deluge of percussion. The B-side hosts the acid-tinged “Creamavity,” as well as “Anxious,” which synthesizes the full pilgrimage into a polished musical definition. To wrap their heli-disc, the mystical duo prescribes a set of two reshapes: Wisdom Teeth’s K-Lone opts for strong foundational grooves and deep airy textures, while Maara crafts an oceanic odyssey – over 10 minutes of timeworn atmospherics and sensorial sensibilities.

Each track was born from sampling its predecessor, creating a recursive dialogue that guided the creative flow. A commitment to a tension-building groove in ‘Up Too Late’, the warped dub throughlines of ‘Tricky One’, the intricate, delicate uptempo delight that is ‘Exit Plan,’ and the bridge between all four tracks ‘Don’t Keep Me In Suspense’ — each reflect different moments in this journey. An expert in textural exploration, the Dutch DJ and producer Konduku (@kondukukonduku) brought out the true hypnotic potential of the title track. Their influences ripple outward, yet the sound remains inherently theirs—fluid, unbound by singular genre or label.
