2026 wraps up with a major arrest: roi* has finally been detained and prosecuted in the Court of Riddim. As one of the industry's most skilled instigators, roi* is known as a highly elusive artist who always has a new trick up his sleeve. While agents successfully handcuffed him at Club Studio Time's Riddim XXL in October, he quickly fled over international waters to his home country of France. It wasn't until weeks later that our Private Investigators were able to secure the lock-down and bring him into custody.

Mix recorded in 2013 on dying tape deck intended to be listened to on tiny boombox in a kitchen

original notes:


1. This mix is aurally centered around Olivier Messiaen's Vingt Regards sur l'enfant Jesus.  Messiaen expresses Christian spirituality in a way that I find appealing; it's often foreboding, bottom heavy and light on top.  The excerpt from Vingt Regards that I included is one of the lighter parts, I kind of wish I had included one of the darker movements too. 
The part of of Vingt Regards that is actually titled "Noel" (that would be Christmas en francais) is pretty sinister sounding. I'd encourage you to listen to the whole thing if you haven't before, especially if you have to deal with any kind of traditional european Christmas.  


2. Of the composers on this mix, Pierre Boulez and Gerard Grisey both studied under Olivier Messiaen; Horatiu Radulescu chilled with him in Paris for a bit too AND your's truly is a 2nd generation student of Messiaen by way of 4 lessons under some guy in Paris whose name I don't remember; I was too busy faking how much French I could understand to learn much. Xenakis studied with Messiaen a tiny bit too maybe according to Wikipedia - there's a funny Xenakis piece for trombone and tenor where the guy is just kind of wailing along making trombone sounds. I almost put it on here, but in the end........I forgot to.  


3. Much of the music presented here is crudely excerpted from pieces that are quite long and their length is structurally extremely relevant.  OOOOPS! :}~~ hahahahaha 


4. I listen to this mix through a small boombox in the kitchen, so I left the tape hiss on for myself.  Feel free to remove it, free country.
