Faster Horses @ Ismus, Fold (15/10/22)

For Twice Infinity’s second solo release, the London and Geneva-based DJ and producer GFX – one of the most active newcomers of the past years – makes his vinyl debut with the aptly named Vibing The Groove EP. His three original tracks span a wide array of playful, groovy, punching and driving techno that perfectly showcase GFX’s musical vision for the near future and mark a preliminary goal in his search for a unique musical expression since his release debut in 2020.

The B-side accompanies two remixes by equally exciting members of the next generation of producers; while the approach by Cuban techno activist Hioll is more to the point and made straight up for peak time sets, Manchester-based trance wunderkind Faster Horses explores his not so well known passion for funky and stepping contemporary techno.

having the luxury of DJing full time means I end up with a lot of spare time, and I've definitely fallen victim to procrastination (see the endless scroll). 

so recently I've been trying to force some sort of busyness, and I'm really enjoying these ambient sessions at the moment. It's always a gamble, I either feel it or I don't, and when I don't that's ok, I just get up and go clean or something.

However generally when I do, it REALLY clicks, and that's how all these ambient pieces get made. Always done in a few hours, in one session, usually during periods of heightened emotions. 

Today I felt super sad. The changes in my life have really caught up with me recently. It only recently occurred to me that I never really got any time to process what was going on around me. I went into lockdown a child, was forced to become an adult in isolation, then the pandemic ended, I moved to manchester, became a touring DJ and got into a serious relationship. Maybe some people can handle this stuff fine, but as someone who's spent their whole life dealing with a pretty tough anxiety disorder it's finally caught up with me, and I'm only now processing wtf is going on, and it's a little bit scary. 

I'm not saying I don't love it, because I do. But I can't help feeling a bit of nostalgia for simpler times, hence the track name. There was this really dreamy phase of my 19th year, where I'd just moved to Manchester, just met my girlfriend, had the most amazing friends around me, (I still do tbf) was so excited for what was to come, and looking back I really miss that feeling. I feel so burnt out these days. The hyper-socialisation of this scene has really taken it's toll on my head.

I'll figure it out, I usually do. In the mean time, you guys get to enjoy these ambient pieces inspired by my lack of knowing what the fuck is going on.

Faster Horses at Glitch Berlin RSO 2024

A test recording of the liveset I wrote under my pathfinder project, which was used to soundtrack the walk in for Azyr's all night long set at the BEC arena in south Manchester.

Focusing on downtempo / ambient sounds in order to create a peaceful environment before the carnage was unleashed, and also to soundtrack the beginning of the attendees descent into stimulation and euphoria.

Recorded with a Digitakt, Laptop, Polymoog pedal, some old Akai midi controller and a lot of patience.

I hope it brings you some peace :)

the first in a series of more experimental pieces i'm going to slowly release under my pathfinder alias over the next few months. 

drawing inspiration from the peace and nostalgia I found in early sci-fi movies, along with the cosmos itself. 

I made this track today to help me feel better after a difficult week, hopefully you can find some peace within it too :)

creatively this year’s been a lil tough - it almost feels at times like you’re expected to just be full artist mode 24/7. when you’re not touring, you’re in the studio, or posting on socials, but i’m a 23 year old who’s also learning how to navigate the world as a human being, not a DJ, and it’s kind of hard to balance both sometimes. I think the job is so consuming that everything else sort of goes out the window at times, and it’s left me feeling hella burnt out this year. My favourite thing in the world is to make music, but there’s been so much going on that i’ve really struggled to do so. Don’t get me wrong, i’m pretty content with how much i’ve put out this year, but it’s tough when i’m also just trying to be a normal lad at times, navigating relationships, and my own mental health, and i’m constantly reminded of how great all my peers are doing via social media, with their endless collabs, and huge releases. 

But towards the end of the year, i made the decision to stop giving a fuck about this stuff, and start making music for me again - and this has really felt so good. I’ve always put emotion into my music, I use it as a creative outlet for how i’m feeling at the time, and the last two years maybe i’ve not done this as much - instead trying to make stuff that’s commercially viable. But this is ridiculous, and i’m glad i’ve remembered that. I make music for me, and if i lose everything, i’ll still be able to sit down and make a track that i like, and a lot of people wouldn’t be able to say that.
