On November 12th, singer/songwriter Ab & beat-smith 14KT will release the collaboration album, “Saturn Return.” Five years in the making, the progressive soul album was created during a transitory period of their lives.

While on the surface the album seems to be about a story of a man and woman, it’s also about growing up and reexamining choices to have a better future. Fittingly called Saturn Return after the astrological transit that everyone experiences between ages 27-30, this collaboration between Ab and 14KT show two artists that combine their years of musical experience and personal angst to create a soulful, galactic journey that everyone can relate to.

The first single from the album is a co-produced funk record titled “Lover’s Galaxy” that is reminiscent of legends “Zapp & Roger” due to Ab’s use of the vocoder on top off 14KT’s rhythmic drum pulse. “Lover’s Galaxy” is the introduction to the holy matrimony of 14KT’s hard-hitting drums and euphoric atmosphere coupled with Ab’s melodic and soulful approach to instrumentation.

“Lover’s Galaxy” is also the beginning of the story of “Ab” and “Lalah”, two fictional characters that are caught in a whirlwind romance throughout the entire Saturn Return album. On this record we meet Ab as he’s attempting to court Lalah and encouraging her to “let her guard down.” The invitation is as much for Lalah as it is for the listener that is beginning this journey into a rare soul album with a definitive purpose.

About Ab:

Aaron Abernathy, professionally known as Ab, is a multi-talented musician -- singer, songwriter, producer, and entertainer. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Ab joined the ranks of artists like Donny Hathaway and Roberta Flack as a graduate from the prestigious music program at Howard University, where he sharpened his vocal abilities and musicianship. With outstanding talents as both a keyboard player and a vocalist, he has collaborated and acted as musical director for global touring acts Black Milk and Slum Village as well as collaborated with Grammy-nominated artists including Jack White, The Foreign Exchange, and Eric Roberson.

Kendall Tucker, professionally known as 14KT, is an extraordinary producer/DJ hailing from Ypsilanti, Michigan. As a two-time winner of Red Bull's Big Tune national beat battle competition, 14KT has produced for the likes of Mayer Hawthorne, Bun B, Jay Electronica, and Aloe Blacc. James Dewitt Yancey, better known under the name Jaydee or J-Dilla left us on february 10th 2006 at the age of 33. This american producer and composer has worked with a lot of artists such as Busta Rhymes, Common, Slum Village, A Tribe called Quest or Madlib. Through his creation, he in- fluenced many artists and musicians across the world which is not limited to the hip hop scene. Recognize by his peers for the imprint he has left in the musical landscape, this avant-garde is today considered like being simply a genius, a virtuoso, a precursor.
For the 6th year anniversary of his death, the Food for ya Soul collective (soundcloud.com/foodforyasoul), the silkscreen print Do the Right Print studio (dotherightprint.ch) & the label Feelin Music (feelinmusic.ch) came together around a common project in memory of J-Dilla. The Do The Dilla concept is born.
The idea is to bring together different artists to work and perpetuate J-Dilla’s art in order to give the audience a new visions of Dilla’s creations. A selection of beatmakers from across the world, as well as FFYS, DTRP & Feelin Music members worked for free to create a record containing Jaydee’s classics remixed.
The album is in line (and will be given away to the audience) with a live event called «Do The Dilla» which will take place on february 11th 2012 at Le Romandie in Lausanne with guests like Brussels own DJ Lefto from the famous jazz label Blue Note, Fatoosan from the Supafly collective along with Chief, founder of Feelin’ Music and of course the Helvetico- Belgian group Food for ya Soul in full force with Ngoc Lan, DJ Chikano, Mr Comb & Boo. Like last year, the event will be hosted by Parisian Gyver Hypman.

From deep musical origins in Detroit, rapper/singer/songwriter Illa J has been slowly navigating his way through the oft-turbulent waters of Hip-Hop since the tender age of 13, when the young John Yancey aka Illa J wrote his first rhyme alongside his brother, the late great J Dilla. After his brother’s passing in ‘06, he began teaching himself piano, bass and taking vocal lessons while finding himself touring the world and recording a slew of Dilla-related projects, notably being an active member of Slum Village until 2014. His first solo album, '08s Yancey Boys and the Frank Nitt 2013 collaborative album Sunset BLVD were both released on seminal label Delicious Vinyl. Feeling the need for a change creatively as well as geographically, in 2012 John moved to the future music hotbed that is Montreal ultimately making the connection with Canadian producers Nick Wisdom & AstroLogical aka Potatohead People (whose acclaimed Bastard Jazz debut album Big Luxury in Spring 2015 featured Illa J on two hit singles). The success of their initial collaborations inspired the team to dive into the studio and embark on Illa J's new self-titled solo album, and present an entirely fresh sound of his own.
 
The album Illa J, produced without any samples by Potatohead People alongside a few groundbreaking co-producers, showcases a more mature and at-ease Illa J who is equally comfortable on top of an electronic boogie-inspired beat (“Universe”) as he is getting grimey over a trunk rattling G-Funk joint (the Kaytranada co-produced “Strippers”). On tracks like the sparse, Rhodes driven “Cannonball” (co-produced by Montreal’s Noo Bap), and the early 90s Spiritual / Acid Jazz inspired “Sunflower”, Illa flexes his muscles through both song and rhyme. And of course being true to his roots, the classic Detroit boom-bap sound is ever present on joints like “French Kiss”, “Perfect Game” (quite possibly Rap’s only ode to bowling), and “Never Left”, a touching tribute to his brother and a call-out to abusers of Dilla's legacy.  Vancouver mainstay MC Moka Only contributes invaluably to the cohesive sound of the album as well, providing signature smoothed-out vocal choruses to tracks like “She Burned My Art”, “All Good Pt. 2” and “Who Got It” (co-produced by Mosaic). Dropping Fall 2015 on Bastard Jazz Recordings, Illa J is a brilliantly-produced, diverse, and long overdue solo effort from Yancey.
