The rebirth of Live At The Matterhorn the 2001 album that captured the essence of Fat Freddy’s Drop jam origins. Finally available on heavyweight vinyl. Originally released on CD in 2001, the recording was made when Freddys was honing its sound and chops in the Wellington underground music scene, and taken from a mini disc feed from the desk. The stage was literally the back garden of Wellington’s den of iniquity The Matterhorn just down the road from Ghuznee HQ. The audience consisted of a random collection of 30 people most of whom from memory were hospitality workers having a drink after work. Legend.
Having started as a few musician mates playing along to instrumental B-side records dropped by DJ MU aka Fitchie, by 2001 Freddys was a solid six piece who liked nothing better than to jam. Freddys distinctive hi-tek soul qualities shine through led by the velvet vocals of singer Joe Dukie aka Dallas Tamaira. It’s Fulla Flash aka Warren Maxwell on saxophone, the fore runner to Chopper Reeds. Trombonist Hopepa aka Joe Lindsay is yet to join the band.

‘Live At The Matterhorn’ went on to sell Platinum in New Zealand and while it pre-dates the bands record breaking ‘Based On A True Story’ studio album it's a touchstone for those wanting to experience Freddys early jams, the source for where Freddys story began.

Formed in 1999 in Wellington, New Zealand our sound draws inspiration from almost every part of the black music lexicon. Soul drenched vocals and jazz harmonies collide with tape delays and echo chambers, underpinned by a rhythm section as comfortable laying down a throbbing, techy soundscape as they are a swampy blues stomp.
