The funky and raw “All Over The World” is the debut single off Declaime & Madlib’s collaborative album, ‘In The Beginning (Vol. 1),’ which unearths and compiles tracks from the duo’s work together in the mid-’90s.

Longtime fans of both artists already know that these two go way back with a slew of collaborations, like ‘Illmindmuzik’ (1999), ‘Andsoitisaid’ (2001), ‘A Lil’ Light’ (2003) and ‘Expressions’ (2012), all under Declaime’s Dudley Perkins moniker. But with ‘In The Beginning,’ we’re hearing the roots of it all from these gifted, multi-talented artists who lived across the street from another as kids and whose fathers were friends.

“Madlib was on that musical genius stuff way back then … [but] we both moved and lost contact,” Declaime explains. It wasn’t until years later when Madlib formed The Lootpack that the two reconnected, with the end result being tracks like “All Over the World,” which features another longtime collaborator, MED, on the opening verse.

As Declaime explains, slappers like “All Over the World” existed on various mixtapes and B-sides throughout the years, but got “lost in the sauce for nearly two and a half decades.” But no more, because we’re hearing musical history with the release of this single and the remainder of In The Beginning when it drops.

Eternia showcases her incredible, two-decade-long career with a hard-hitting new mixtape, ‘Journey to FREE: A Retrospective,’ mixed by living legend DJ Eclipse.

All three are produced by Rel McCoy, the artist behind all the production on their upcoming album, FREE.  The mix is blended in a way that feels seamless and timeless, while displaying Eternia’s growth as an artist.

“It’s crazy to think that my equipment collection and beat making process started back in high school with just an 8 second Gemini sampler and a Sony Walkman. It was a super basic set up. Back then I used whatever I could get my hands on. Finding different samples, looping them up, running the layers back through the Walkman. Adding more layers and repeating that process until I had a beat. It worked.

My process is a lot different now but in some ways it’s the same. I still do a lot of layering. I use a combination of hardware and software. Sometimes I start with a sample. Sometime I start with drums. It depends on my mood and the genre. Sometime I use a kit. Other times I will sample and layer drums, run them through another piece of equipment like the SP-12 or 404 to dirty them up, then dump them back into Ableton.

I really don’t have a set way of doing things musically. I like to experiment with different technics and styles. I like my music to have a certain sound. Most of the time I let the process happen naturally.”

10 years after Blu and Exile released their magnum opus Below the Heavens, the California duo have reunited to release 14 tracks from the original 2007 sessions. In the Beginning: Before the Heavens contains previously heard songs and unreleased gems – the best of the best chosen from over 40 songs in the vault. Their third collaboration follows 2012’s Give Me My Flowers While I Can Still Smell Them, and is slated for an October release. 

In The Beginning: Before the Heavens is made of up songs that are raw and untouched, keeping the authenticity of Blu and Exile’s creativity at the time. The album has guest appearances from familiar names like Dr. Oop, Donel Smokes, Aloe Blacc, and Blame One. While “Soul Provider,” “Another Day,” and “Party of Two” appeared on Blu’s Lifted EP, the majority of these songs showcase Blu rapping at his peak, maintaining his underground attitude as he dishes on reaching star status (“Constellations”), getting radio play (“On the Radio”), or opposing views in a problem-ridden world (“You’re Gonna Die Someday”). Exile, meanwhile, builds a golden hip-hop era feel with head-nodding samples and DJ scratches. 

In addition to releasing In The Beginning: Before the Heavens for their fans, Blu and Exile are continuing their celebration of Below the Heavens with a West Coast anniversary tour. After such a huge turnout for the duo’s Below the Heavens anniversary show at the Regent Theatre in L.A. in July, they decided to take the live experience on the road with Dag Savage, Choosey, and Cashus King.

“I started listening to Hip Hop in the 90’s. My interest grew slowly
until it became a collection of records, CDs and taped VHS. This
then evolved into experiments, sampling and chopping WAVs on free
versions of WaveLab. In 2003 this became an MPC 2000XL. I was
living in Los Angeles at the time so I had started going to shows
and hanging out with people who shared similar interests. We all
began to gather and learn together. Records became beats which
became freestyle sessions, songs, laughter and much coughing.
After several years I returned to Tokyo and it’s been 10 years since
I have been back.

I still make beats the same way. Going off of feeling I would get when
I hear a record. The selection of sounds has changed slightly in
accordance with my current environment. Still mostly sample-based
but adding new and old tools have become part of my process. Just
continuing to create music my body and spirit needs to feel good.”
