Last January - The Twilight Sad

Northern Meadow, taken from the debut LP of Kyoto born Rikuto Fujimoto, is a pastoral that aims to paint a picture of a morning breeze blowing through an Irish meadow. Ireland being somewhere that Rikuto would summer with his brother. The melody is haunting but light, and accompanied by the intimate hum of the room where it was recorded. The effect like the crackle of old vinyl, or a shellac 78. The music of Ethiopian nun, Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru, is a good reference point.

Rikuto Fujimoto - Northern Meadow

Ava Rasti is an Iranian-born artist, creating and composing out of the country’s capital Tehran. Both a pianist and bass guitarist, in her late teens Rasti founded the post- punk girl group ‘The Finches’. However, since 2020 she has worked solo, experimenting on the interface between ambient, modern classical and drone. Rasti’s interest in storytelling led her to soundtrack the movie, “Double Life”. In 2023, following a series of sonically evolving singles, she self-released the long-players, “Ginestra” and “The Living Room”. FatCat Records’ 130701 post-classical imprint has signed Rasti’s latest set, the forthcoming LP named “The River”.

The Berlin-based band Lawns were formed in the fall of 2020 by three ex-Londoners, Ben Lubin, Joe Green, and Tobias Humble. While influenced by UK post-punk, the bulk of the listening material that they cite consists of US “post-hardcore”. Listing artists like as Blonde Redhead, Death Grips, Deerhoof, Unwound, and Yo La Tengo as key sources of inspiration. Ben confirms, “We like good noisy stuff… I think that’s in our blood.” They all grew up watching videos of Fugazi, Jesus Lizard, Shellac and The Minutemen, and these forces of nature certainly inform Lawns’ incendiary live shows.

The Worrier is a pummelling, pounding paean to paranoia, and the absolute shit, which unchecked, fills our heads. From unpaid bills to imagined physical ills. Fuelled by mainstream and social media. Something like a sonic taser shock it’s the soundtrack to a potential nervous breakdown. Like the rest of the album it expresses, externalises an internal darkness, in a ritual of frenzied release. Its arrangement is like a series of seizures.

LAWNS - The Worrier

Singer-songwriter Vashti Bunyan today announces Lookaftering - Expanded Edition, a reissue of her legendary second album, out on 7 February 2025 via Fat Cat Records. 

Marking the occasion of 20 years since the original release, and coinciding with Vashti’s 80th birthday, the new expanded edition features the original studio album along with a second LP / disc of demos, an alternate take, and a live performance version. This edition also comes with reflective sleeve notes from Vashti, producer Max Richter and Devendra Banhart, as well as a 16-page lyric booklet featuring a collection of paintings by Vashti's daughter Whyn Lewis  – paintings that they both say have closely, and coincidentally, reflected the lyrics of the album. 

Originally recorded between 2001 and 2005, the unreleased demos were created at Vashti’s home on her accompanying electric and acoustic guitar along with a host of experimental instrumentation from synths, accordion, piano, strings, pipe organ, harmonium and recorders. The collection of demos offers a more stripped back sound compared to the finished album, and the live version of Lately recorded at an early “comeback” gig in LA in 2006, orchestrated as on the record, is absolutely pitch perfect.
 
Listening to the demos and the final versions side-by-side while reading the sleeve notes is a wonderful experience, learning and hearing how the songs and the long-player evolved, with Vashti and Max Richter (who produced and played on the album), explaining how all of the artists involved (Devendra Banhart, Johanna Newson, Adem Ilhan, Robert Kirby and members of the band Vetiver), touched by Vashti’s original 1970 album, Just Another Diamond Day, jumped at the opportunity to be there. Max Richter recalls, “It felt like a community project; a family of people coming together”.

Devendra Banhart said: “Lookaftering is a quiet prayer for a world left behind, a remembrance of a world that could have been but never was, a Lookforwarding to a world that may yet still be... As ethereal and haunted as these eleven songs may be, they are also rooted in the earthly magic of wisdom born from experience. Something so rare and honest it’s nearly otherworldly in its total human-ness.”

Speaking of the reissue, Vashti said: “the beautiful photograph of Max in the studio playing wine glasses with his young daughter’s violin bow, brings it all back to me - how very fortunate I have been.”

Fernando Moresi-Haberman is a guitarist based in Barcelona, though he was born and raised in Buenos Aires. His discovery and subsequent immersion in the works of John Fahey, Robbie Basho, and William Tyler led him to begin working on his first EP titled Estudios (Études). 
These songs were birthed out of his desire to create a language-free space in which spontaneous sounds and formal elements of composition combine and take precedent over the spoken, or sung, word. Unrelenting in his recording habits, he grabs everything in one take, a method which sometimes drives him mad but has yielded this recording, which he sincerely hopes you will enjoy.

We are excited to announce the first new signing of 2016 to our 130701 imprint, in the form of Polish cellist Resina. The alias of Warsaw-based Karolina Rec, Resina was signed after sending us a hugely impressive demo last year. 

Born in 1982, Karolina graduated from the Music Academy in Gdansk and the University of Gdansk. Active in Poland's independent music scene since the late '00s, she was co-founder / collaborator of some of Poland's most influential alternative bands, has featured on numerous album releases and soundtracks (including the Oscar-nominated 'Rabbit a la Berlin'), and is the author of a dozen music productions for theatre. A compulsive live artist, her style is primarily characterized by personal language of improvisation and alternative approach to melodyHer self-titled debut album is a result of experiments with cello and simple electronic tools - sometimes close to the form of song; sometimes based more on powerful, intuitive impressions but always marked by the desire to use non-obvious characteristics of the instrument.

Resina will play at 130701 showcases at Tallinn Music Week on April 1st and at The Brighton Festival on May 10th. A debut solo album is set for release on 130701 later this year.

Resina is the alias of Karolina Rec, a cellist/ composer based in Warsaw, who signed to 130701 having sent in this album as a hugely impressive demo late last year. A very accomplished performer with a background in Polish underground music, this eponymous album is her solo debut and sees a rich, atmospheric re-imagining of a Polish music rooted in a feeling for indigenous nature / landscape and realised via an intuitive, experimental approach to playing.

A fantastic debut release, ‘Resina’ is an immersive and deeply enchanting album, which unveils a unique and striking new talent.

Eighteen months on from his last new release, Vancouver-based singer / composer Ian William Craig returns with an (album-length) EP that collects together eleven new tracks. Entitled 'Thresholder', the record sees Craig return towards the smudged and scoured beauty of his 2016 opus, 'Centres'.

Recorded, produced and mastered by Ian William Craig himself, the origins of these tracks span a period from 'A Turn of Breath' to 'Centres'. Some were recorded at Ian's old studio on Vancouver's UBC campus, some at home, and one even recorded on tour in a giant secret underground cistern in Sweden. 

'Thresholder' will be released on 130701 on November 2nd.

Breton has announced the release of a brand new single ‘Population
Density’, due for release on 5th November 2012 on FatCat Records.
Recorded between festivals over the summer at the band’s creative HQ The
Lab, the band road tested it for the first time at the Route Du Rock festival
in France last month in front of 7,000 people – it was one of the highlights of the
set.There are two additional tracks on the single – ‘Governing Correctly’,
taken from the band’s debut much laude album ‘Other People’s Problems’
and a dub remix of ‘Governing Correctly from Ed Banger head honcho Busy
P.

The band have been playing festivals all over Europe throughout the summer
and have just embarked on their first headline tour of the States, Canada and

A wonderfully immersive suite of five stunning new tracks, ‘Shifts’ expands upon Swedish-Iranian pianist / composer Shida Shahabi’s debut album and confirms her as a genuine new force in contemporary piano music.  

A year on from her debut, ‘Shifts’ sees Shida continue to mine her beloved old JG Malmsjö upright piano as a source of warmth and character. Without radically departing from the ‘Homes’ blueprint, this time around her palette is expanded, with the opening three tracks seeing the prominent addition of cello, provided by Linnea Olsson. The timbre and tone of Olsson’s cello perfectly complements and adds emotional resonance to Shida’s own playing, with the two interlocking beautifully.  

From the opening bars of first track ‘Futō’, the mechanics of the piano are again clearly audible, with a wonderfully visceral recording revealing intimate acoustic details and imperfections - the hiss / fuzz of tape machinery, the creaking and clanking of the piano’s pedals, hammers and keys. Recorded by Shida and Elias Krantz in various Stockholm locations, the record was mixed by Hampus Norén and mastered at Calyx by Francesco Donadello (Jóhann Jóhannsson, Modeselektor & Tom Yorke, A winged Victory for the Sullen, Dustin O'Halloran, Lubomyr Melnyk, Hauchka, etc). 

'Shifts' is released on 130701 on 8th November on vinyl and digital formats. The EP will be released in Scandinavia via the Sing A Song Fighter label.

Hibou is the moniker of Peter Michel who formerly toured North America and Europe as the drummer of indie outfit Craft Spells. At only 19, he already has a year-long touring experience and two songs under his belt, one of which is the new demo track of the week.

Here are a few words on Glow by Peter: 

"Glow was inspired by the way my life seemed to be darkly growing and spreading in directions I wasn't familiar with. I wanted the song to sound as though it had a sharp pulse, but was also ominous and dreary."
