October 2013 will see the reissue of 26-year old American composer Peter Broderick's 2008 debut album Float. Returning to his home in Oregon, where his musical journey began, Peter completes the circle with the release of Float 2013. Remastered by the gifted hands of Nils Frahm, Float 2013 will also include two additional bonus tracks with each album download and will be reissued on CD, vinyl, digital and even on a limited edition cassette via Erased Tapes. The album release will also be accompanied by Float 2013 Addendum, a 7” single featuring ‘Something Has Changed’ re-arranged as a duet for violin and viola, with the new title ‘Something Has Remained’.

Brought up in a musical household in Oregon, Peter quickly became a popular session musician for the likes of M. Ward in the Portland area. Later discovered by the Danish band Efterklang he joined their live band and spent the next six years based in Europe where he collaborated with many like-minded contemporaries. Through relentless touring, multiple album recordings and film scores Peter has established himself as a solo artist, known for his innate gift as a musical medium to picking up any instrument, turning his musings into poignant songs.

Having previously released ‘Ten Duets‘ on cassette tape, Peter is a big fan of this format and is excited to be taking part in Cassette Store Day on September 7th 2013. Float 2013 will be available in store in a hand numbered limited edition of purple cassettes in bespoke packaging. ’A dialogue was started with Robert, about the idea of one day giving Float a second chance. And a bit later I found myself in the studio of my dear friend Nils, remastering these songs which on one hand felt so far away, but on the other felt right at the core of my musical heart, the foundation of my aspirations as a musician. And what Nils did to the sound, how he worked his magic as he always does, filled me with the conviction that this project had not previously reached its potential. In so many ways I've found myself coming around the circle, back to the place I started, only perhaps the circle itself has moved. But the dream is the same. Steinway artist, Chad Lawson, decided Chopin needed a new introduction.  Along with violinist Judy Kang (Lady Gaga, Ryuichi Sakamoto) and cellist Rubin Kodheli (Kanye West, Norah Jones), Lawson has arranged ten Chopin works into a minimalist landscape.

It's a risk editing the "poet of the piano" but one that Chopin would be proud of.  

Taking 10 Chopin works, Lawson decided to scale the works down to a minimalist setting.  "I knew even if bare-bones, Chopin's works could still be as spellbinding as the original compositions we are so familiar with." says the pianist.

"First up is an outtake from the new record; Terminal 5. I'm not sure why it wasn't included on the record. If it was 100% down to me, it would've been included but we're a democracy. It's not about the venue in New York, it's about Terminal 5 at Heathrow... meeting my girlfriend Tsouni from the plane. It's very literal ha. Very much about her. I'm not very comfortable writing lyrics like this but I really meant this. 

Talking of literal lyricists, here's Sun Kil Moon, the truly peerless Townes Van Zandt and then BARR. Then the podcast takes a trip into some other influences; Dischord Records and Lungfish. I don't know whether those things come through. I don't care really. We're just doing our thing."

It's all people who one way or another are stretching things. I love music that's rooted in strong melodies or rhythms, but I love it even more when these are eaten away at, undermined and pulled apart.  Hopefully this is a mix that takes you on a journey and shows how broad 130701's scope might be.

Dave Howell - 24 tracks for HC (130701 Mixtape For Headphone Commute)

My aim here is to give a listener a new look at the classical music. Whilst much music from that time is boring and excessive but through years my interest was to gather some compositions that are hundreds of years old but that sound really contemporary. For example, there are two compositions from Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov that were written in the 19th century but sound like a soundtrack for a good 2016 movie. There are also two of my personal reworks of classical compositions by Georges Bizet and Edward Grieg, to make them modern-day in a weird and subtle way. I have included a number of beautiful contributions from XX and XXI century composers including Arvo Part and Daniel Bjarnason as well as the orchestral rendition of Aphex Twin and two pieces from modern Russian composers — Pavel Karmanov and Valery Gavrilin.

Here's a little mix I did today from some fine music that was lying around.

You must name the tracks and artists and the first one to get it right will receive a proper bundle of vinyl from Brownswood records and from the basement - some old and new in there....but I don't think you'll get it so I might as well throw in a copy of Donald Byrd's Kofi if I can find my second one!
