The interlude of Carnivals w/ Friends has Father Rhyme briefly explain how the album came to be. He attributes the album’s existence to his decision to go to a different high school than all of his middle school friends to pursue his dream of working in entertainment.

The title refers to Father Rhyme’s proclaimed inability to “go Hollywood” on his middle school friends and forget where he came from. The interlude is formatted like an answer to an interview question.

As with all of the spoken parts on Carnivals w/ Friends, this was intentionally recorded using the Voice Memos app on an iPhone 7.

Body: Unfit for Hollywood

Considered “Minimalist Trap” by its lyric writer and its producer, “A Possible Virtue” dives deep into the darker side of Father Rhyme’s mind as he takes the listener through his rougher experiences, including making his first album. The title suggests that he believes the doubt in himself that he experiences is a good thing in moderation. Even though the song talks a lot about feeling weak, it also talks about feeling stronger in light of these doubts and learning from each moment.

The main themes deal with anxiety, social responsibility, toxic relationships, and internal battles with identity, and the fading of the vocals at the end of the song presumably represents a constant struggle to silence these overbearing thoughts so that he can keep living.

While the lyrics for the song were influenced by Father Rhyme’s own life, it’s clear that it was dedicated to overthinkers and made to be a catharsis for him and the listener.

A Possible Virtue

Heavily influenced by the work of JPEGMAFIA, “By the Hinge,” written and performed by Carnivals w/ Friends’s producer, olias, represents a violent and doubting stream of consciousness, breaking up the flow of the album to acknowledge the darker side of being with friends and being with yourself.

This abstract song sets up the theme and the instruments for the next, more structured one, “A Possible Virtue.”

“Acoustic Family” is about the importance of strong bonds, and suggests that many of the world’s atrocities could become nonexistent if every person had a support system. The song also gives more of a glimpse into Father Rhyme’s personal life, including how his upbringing makes him long for peace and an allusion to divorce.

"Tiny Rainbow Friendship Ghost" both admires and criticizes social media, especially Snapchat. Father Rhyme talks about how the popular app's group chat function brought him and his friends together, but also explores the changing culture that runs parallel to social media's evolution. The song addresses how social media has brought different aspects of entertainment under one umbrella and become a weapon to be used for good and evil.

Given the song's four word, unorthodox title and it's underlying theme of coming together, it appears to have been inspired by N.E.R.D's "Lightning Fire Magic Prayer".

"Intro: Prompted" introduces the theme of *Carnivals w/ Friends* as Father Rhyme describes the lead up to writing a college essay for the fourth time.  He is initially averse to the assignment, but finds inspiration when he thinks about his life since 2016, the year that he met his best friends. It is formatted as a short story with written dialogue, switching between that and an internal monologue at the end.

Nate Williams, aka Father Rhyme, is a young rap artist from New Jersey looking to share his story and vision for a better, more unified world through his music. Though his first single, Hibiscus Leaves, wasn't released until 2019, he had been performing music since 2016 at his high school's shows. He would be on vocals for all genres, ranging from songs by Rage Against the Machine to The Ink Spots.
