"Exercise #3 (Building)" is from the beautiful new CFCF release 'Exercises' out April 24th on Paper Bag Records.

For his new EP 'Exercises', out in April on Paper Bag Records, Montreal's CFCF shows a different side of his pallette with a series of subdued piano and synth based pieces. Pulling from influences like Philip Glass, Ryuichi Sakamoto and David Borden, among others, and using institutional architecture and 70s Canadiana as a framework, the EP has a distinctly 20th century feel. Opener "1 (Entry)" lures us in with a melancholy bed of synths, while standout "3 (Building)"'s rolling piano melodies build to a cathartic crescendo. The lone vocal piece, "5 (September)", is a cover of the opener to David Sylvian's 'Secrets of the Beehive' album, refitted with 2-step percussion and wintry pads. This is a change of pace for CFCF to be sure, but no less cinematic and evocative than his 2009 debut 'Continent', though where that record evoked long stretches of neon road and epic rainforests, 'Exercises' is all snowy walkways and long corridors, endless escalators ascending to desolate concrete plateaus. Each track feels like an exploration of lost memories, studies in nostalgia, exercises in spatial remembrance.

Originally crafted as an anonymous concept project, Shah Marg was later revealed to be the work of Monster Rally (Ted Feighan) who describes the music as "blown out funk", taking inspiration from early 70s rock, psychedelia, and the sounds of India and the Middle East. Originally released in 2012, the Desert EP was recorded shortly after a trip through India and is inspired by the chaos, beauty and street noise of its cities and rural areas. The 7" version, featuring the first 4 tracks of the EP, is limited to 300 individually numbered copies and comes in a stamped, die-cut jacket. A new digital only bonus track was added during the vinyl mastering process.

Morningbell is one of the more prolific, inventive, and fiercely independent bands in the country. With six albums and four EPs over nine years (including an album released only on custom-made USB cards, a choose-your-own-adventure album, and 2009’s universally lauded Sincerely, Severely), Morningbell has gone more places with their music than most bands do in an entire career. They are constantly stretching themselves musically and creatively in a way that very few bands do.

The band hails from Gainesville, Florida—a hotbed of musical creativity (see Hundred Waters, Levek, Hot Water Music, etc)—and consists of brothers Travis and Eric Atria, Stacie Atria (married to Eric), and drummer Chris Hillman.

Boa Noite is the band’s 6th studio album. It was written, recorded, mixed, and produced by the band in their home studio. It draws influences from romantic classical music, African field recordings, Hungarian folk music, the poems of Jorge Luis Borges, “The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam,” “Finnegan’s Wake,” “Ulysses,” Chopin’s polonaises, classic hip-hop, Charles Mingus, Paul Simon, Curtis Mayfield, Kurt Vonnegut, and the compositions of Claude Debussy, Frederick Delius, John Cage and Arvo Part.

With Boa Noite, the band wanted orchestral backing. Without access to an orchestra, however, they pieced one together during half a dozen sessions with multiple classical musicians. The result is a grand, sweeping, ambitious album with songs that often contain upwards of 150 tracks of instruments.

Morningbell has always rejected label backing (although they ran their own label, Orange Records, between 2005 and 2011), yet by the power of their music and hard work, they performed at Bonnaroo and SXSW, toured the country many times over, were featured in a film that debuted at SXSW, and appeared on MTV’s “The Real World,” GQ.com, and in hundreds of blogs and magazines from their hometown to Greece.

The band are now on the verge of releasing a new anticipated album, Uncanny Valley, out on June 17th, their first output since previous albums Dystopia and The Crystal Axis. This EP is the first taste of their new material, which sounds uniquely Midnight Juggernauts. Situated at a self-styled nexus between genre and era, their new output may be described as warm-hearted cold wave, interstellar harmony's, early 1950's house, steeped in the darkness of dusty Giallo soundtracks, audio spomeniks at once futuristic and rustic, a bold musical future envisaged through a soundtrack to a forgotten Eastern Bloc Tarkovsky film, sifting through the ruins of LPs past.
