Working under the name Craft Spells, Stockton, Calif.'s Justin Vallesteros makes music for bedsitters who dream about being social. Though often addressed to a love interest either real or imagined, Idle Labor is above all a lonely album that rarely betrays its origin as a solo project. Sonically it recalls Wild Nothing it the way it mines a large swath of 1980s synth pop, but its clear emotional tenor gives it a distinguishing perspective and personality.
Idle Labor exists in a time frame best described by the title of its ebullient centerpiece-- "After the Moment". These are sketches of romantic problems and solutions with the wounds still fresh and the thoughts uncensored. Taken as a whole, it could be read as a narrative following Vallesteros from heartbreak to infatuation and back, a few months' worth of romantic uncertainty boiled down to a taut and hooky album.
In a maundering yearn somewhere between Jens Lekman and Ian Curtis, Vallesteros introduces himself as a lovelorn melodramatist over sunstroked, near-Balearic pop. But as the narrative begins to hint at physical contact, the music works in lockstep, and Vallestreros builds tracks more as a dance producer than a singer-songwriter. And that's where he hits his stride-- while his vocals remain a central fixture, the post-punk mordancy is softened by locomotive arrangements that stack synth pads, ringing guitar, and primitive drum programming.
"Party Talk" starts a mid-album mini-suite with Vallesteros as a nebbishy Woody Allen character trying to decode a mutual romantic connection from casual conversation. But he leaps forward during the upbeat "From the Morning Heat", and by the fantastic morning-after celebration "After the Moment", something has apparently clicked; Vallesteros repeats the chorus as if he knows it's the best he's written.
The emotional high is predictably short-lived, and even within its brief half-hour runtime, more than a few of the melodies take detours and left turns. "The Fog Rose High" has the feel of a gothier Beach Fossils, while the anodyne dream-pop scruff of "You Should Close the Door" could have been a Radio Dept. B-side. But as with so many bedroom auteurs' debuts, it's tough to separate the creation from the creator, and Idle Labor shows the promise of a precocious songwriter who isn't claiming to have anything totally figured out just yet.

Husband Material started life as many bands seem to these days. Boy/Girl in bedroom starts making music on a laptop, music gets too big for bedroom and too big for laptop. Real life humans join to perform bedroom songs and that’s usually where it ends. In the case of this band their songs kept growing sonically while the rooms they played started to get bigger and the bedroom became a distant memory. 
Self -described as “Anorak Pop for the masses” Husband Material’s songs are instantly accessible, danceable and thought provoking in equal measures. Made up of friends and lovers, frontman Richard Board recruited fellow band members, Charlotte Desborough, Zac Harris and George Rothman to start playing his synth heavy songs he’d recorded during the Winter of 2013. 

Testing the water in spring this year the band posted a first track and calling card which soon clocked up thousands of hits and the attention of the blog masses. Later a debut single arrived via acclaimed Bristol indie ‘Art is Hard’ and soon sold out. Talk Too Much goes one step beyond previously heard tracks with their boldest production and biggest chorus yet. If you like your indie-pop with a futurist 80s sheen then Husband Material ARE your new favorite band. Talk Too Much is backed with What Did I Do Wrong and arrives on hyper limited square picture disc via Super Fan 99 this November.

Muted Colours

Newcastle dream pop outfit Seeing Hands have announced the upcoming release of their debut single ‘I Knew You’. Recorded in their hometown, the track is the first in a series of releases planned over the next twelve months and sparks immediate comparisons to the likes of The War On Drugs and Wild Nothing.

Comprising of Kev Curran (vocals, guitar), Nick Hodgson (lead guitar), Jon Varty (bass) and Liam Guillan (drums), the quartet’s jangly guitars and dreamy vocals have already earned them airplay on Radio X and their profile is sure to be enhanced further following this first single release.

Produced by Jack Boyle and John Elliott (Loft Studios, Newcastle), Seeing Hands’ ‘I Knew You’ is released on 5th August and will be available to purchase on iTunes and Spotify.

I Knew You

You can’t deny that there is something sorrowful behind the Bergen-based, lo-fi dream/psych pop trio Chain Wallet, and you can’t hide that their music suits the environment wherein it was created. It may be a cliché that it always rains in the band’s hometown, but when you play songs like «Faded Fight», it’s not difficult imagine the mist hanging heavily over their indie dystopian vision of Bergen. 

Even though feelings of nostalgia and melancholy lurk in the Scandinavian shadows, it’s not difficult to find indie-pop gold in its purest form, glittering below the heavy layers of synth and reverb.

The band say this about the song: In a blog, someone called our lyrics «nonsensical», and the mantra «can't you see – we're not making any sense at all» is a comment on this careless remark. It is not a love song but a portrayal of a romantic failure. It is perhaps the record’s most to-the-point pop song, with an uplifting chorus that is a stark contrast to the romantic failure. The main character has begun reaching for the moon, and we are giving the couple in the song two more weeks, maybe.

«Muted Colours», the first single from their forthcoming debut album, recieved more than 90.000 plays in just two weeks, and right now everything is pointing upwards for Chain Wallet. «Faded Fight» is available digitally from August 17, and their self titled album will be released on October 7.
