West Midlands trio blckshdw flip Sampha into the next dimension and Sheffield’s Utah get knee-deep in the swamp. We also have a gorgeous re-interpretation of Erikah Badou’s classic On and On from Nomis; then for the house heads there’s the skippy percussion of Latcha and the faultless grooves of Spike O’Connell. Established in 1997, The Fat! Club encompasses a blog, the much loved Fat! Records, London clubbing legend Chew The Fat!, artist agency TFA Bookings and a management arm.
This historic commitment to UK underground music and culture has seen Chew The Fat! host arenas at festivals across the UK and Europe, monthly parties around the globe and seven consecutive summer residencies at We Love… Sundays, at the world famous Space in Ibiza.

Hailing from the hedonistic mecca of Maidstone, Spike O’Connell is another promising young act we’ve been keeping tabs on in the vibrant Kent scene of late. Touching on elements of Chicago here, but with an unmistakeably UK groove, Never Hold Me Down will get any party started right!

MORE ABOUT PRESS: Press (aka Greg Kennedy) is a Producer & DJ bursting onto the dance scene. Learning his craft by going to raves and festivals around London with his homemade press pass – PRESS knows how to make a track for the festival tent, packed warehouse, or city club.
 
After getting traction with some remixes and some sets at off-the-record house parties around London, PRESS Music got the attention from BBC Introducing with his first official release, The Angel EP.  Inspired by 70’s disco, old-school UK Garage, and pumping rave tunes – the unique EP has been supported by international DJs and radio stations.
 
After a stint studying and working around Europe, PRESS head was turned and his tracks & shows have taken on some new life – inspired by wild raves and playing sets in some of Europe’s hottest techno scenes, including Copenhagen, Berlin and Milan – Greg is is piling up new tracks full of original inspiration. Distinctive tracks and sets inspired by the UK dance scene with touches of harder-hitting electronic/techno.
 
With a passion for discovering new inspirations and a talent for unique, diverse music production PRESS’ forthcoming creations and rowdy sets are sure to lift the roof of venues worldwide.

From Cosmic Cabo Verde to synth-reggae at the Horn of Africa.

Frankfurt-based label Analog Africa is easily one of the most noteworthy labels rescuing and reissuing Afro sounds.

In 2015, the label gave us an exceptional anthology of Afro-Cuban pioneer Amara Touré, not to mention a compilation of tracks plucked straight from the dance floors of ’70s Senegal. Last year, they blew our human minds with some of the most extraterrestrial synth music we’ve ever heard on Space Echo.

This year, the label turns ten. To celebrate label boss Samy Ben Redjeb and his DJ partner Pedo Knopp have recorded a special mix which we’re delighted to share here.

“What is special about this mix is the fact that all the songs, except one, will be released on Analog Africa in 2017,” says Samy. “They have all been handpicked by myself and mixed in real time, without loops or any other kind of gimmicks by Pedo.”

It’s a synth-ridden journey from reggae in the Horn of African to Cosmic sounds of Cabo Verde, wavey soca-boogie monsters and other proto-electronic Afro jams.

SEAN & DEV's "SPLIFFLAM" from their 2010 "ALL ROADS LEAD TO THE FUTURE" progresses into new forms with Sub Philo Music's next release "SPLIFFLAM ~ THE REMIXES." Featuring friends from all over the world, along with some choice Seattle talent; the Artists all generously flex their muscles and give us something differently recollective to think about.

First out of the gate is the Alaskan native that Seattle is now lucky enough to call their own, ASTRONOMAR. His remix starts things out on the right foot: solid, yet wobbly. It takes the sounds in a different direction entirely and that direction feels on point. Classic minded with an experimental spirit - this retake is bound to drive boogie floors deep, deep crazy.

Next up is Sub Philo's head dude THRILLS bringing it old school house style. Adding a latin-y shake to the rhythm section and pushing the ol' sounds to a brand spanking new place. Psychedelic echos and percussion that won't let anyone off easy - this track takes you somewhere you want to go again and again. Lucky enough you know right where to find it. Another keeper from the SPMG honcho.

Going across the pond to Glasgow, U.K. - we meet up with the uber-talented JACE SYNTAX and his epic acidic journey to places aural, mental, and spiritual. For awhile now Jace has been on the radar of many top DJs as he releases track after great track for labels like Mark Ambrose's Crayon, UK's Mutate, Detroit's Soiree, and many others - this remix is no exception to the pattern set. Close your eyes and take the ride because the journey is the worthy destination.

From Scotland, we move to the SE of the U.S. as South Carolina's CULTURE PROPHET puts their spin on SPLIFFLAM and boy does it got flavor. Putting all the classic sounds of the original into a gentle blender and turning it into something very special - This is electro done right. Solid and playful, with just enough soul to know they mean it for keeps. We all profit from music like this.

Fearing this might get too northern hemisphere-centric, we fly down to NULL OBJECT's neighborhood in Lilyfield, Austrailia. Here the magic wizard of live analogue gear shows us how it's done. Created and recorded entirely live - using gear most producer's only wish they could get their hands on, we find out what we have been missing if we have not yet devoted ourselves to checking out every experimental nuance this singular producer puts up for our perusal.

Finally heading back to SEAN & DEV's home in the Pacific Northwest, Seattle's KID SMPL does us some dark post-dubstep as only he can. Atmospheric and moody: he pushes the envelope to places most fear to go. Testing the boundaries of rhythm, texture and groove - he makes the track familiar and alien at the same time. As he should.

The old idiom says variety is the spice of life. If so, this EP stands as 6 stars; but don't worry, it will always remain palatable as there is something here for everyone. And for many they will find an all you can eat buffet where you will continually discover something appetizing. Eat up. It's good for you. And by the way - rumor has it the wonderful original Sean & Dev track SPLIFFLAM will be released gratis to whet your appetite of this smorgasbord of brimming groove.

The city of Belém, in the Northern state of Pará in Brazil, has long been a hotbed of culture and musical innovation. Enveloped by the mystical wonder of the Amazonian forest and overlooking the vastness of the Atlantic Ocean, Belém consists of a diverse culture as vibrant and broad as the Amazon itself. Amerindians, Europeans, Africans - and the myriad combinations between these people - would mingle, and ingeniously pioneer musical genres such as Carimbó, Samba-De-Cacete, Siriá, Bois-Bumbás and bambiá. Although left in the margins of history, these exotic and mysteriously different sounds would thrive in a parallel universe of their own.

Perched on a peninsula between the Bay of Guajará and the Guamá river, sculpted by water into ports, small deltas and peripheral areas, Belém had connected city dwellers with those deeper within the forest providing fertile ground for the development of a popular culture mirroring the mighty waters surrounding it. Through the continuous flow of culture, language and tradition, various rhythms were gathered here and transformed into new musical forms that were simultaneously traditional and modern.

Historically marginalized African religions like Umbanda, Candomblé and the Tambor de Mina, which had reached this side of the Atlantic through slaves from West Africa – especially from the Kingdom of Dahomey, currently the Republic of Benin – left an indelible stamp on the identity of Pará´s music. They would give birth to Lundun, Banguê and Carimbó, styles later modernised by Verequete, Orlando Pereira, Mestre Cupijó and Pinduca to great effect. The success of these pioneers would create a solid foundation for a myriad of modern bands in urban areas.

Known as the “Caribbean Port,” Belem had been receiving signal from radio stations from Colombia, Surinam, Guyana and the Caribbean islands - notably Cuba and the Dominican republic - since the 1940s. By the early 1960s, Disc jockeys breathlessly exchanged Caribbean records to add these frenetic, island sounds to liven up revelers. The competition was fierce as to who would be the first to bring unheard hits from these countries. The craze eventually reached local bands’ repertoires, and Belém’s suburbs got overtaken by merengue, leading to the creation of modern sounds such as Lambada and Guitarrada.

Another important aspect in understanding how the musical tradition spread in Belém, are the aparelhagem sonora: the sound system culture of Pará. Beginning as simple gramophones connected to loudspeakers tied to light posts or trees, these sound systems livened up neighbourhood parties and family gatherings. The equipment evolved from amateur models into sophisticated versions, perfected over time through the wisdom of handymen. Today’s aparelhagens draw immense crowds, packing clubs with thousands of revelers in Belém’s peripheral neighbourhoods or inland towns in Pará.

With bustling night clubs providing the best sound systems and erotic live shows, gossip about the whereabouts of legendary bands, singers turned into movie stars, supreme craftiness, and the creativity of a class of musicians that didn’t hesitate to take a gamble, Jambú is an exhilarating, cinematic ride into the beauty and heart of what makes Pará’s little corner of the Amazon tick. The hip swaying, frantic percussion and big band brass of the mixture of carimbó with siriá, the mystical melodies of Amazonian drums, the hypnotizing cadence of the choirs, and the deep, musical reverence to Afro-Brazilian religions, provided the soundtrack for sweltering nights in the city’s club district.

The music and tales found in Jambú are stories of resilience, triumph against all odds, and, most importantly, of a city in the borders of the Amazon who has always known how to throw a damn good party.
