Introducing: Deep Barrels, a new online mix series by Studio Aurora  🌐🍷🔊

It's finally time to bring to light a project that has been stuck as a work in progress for almost 5 years. Before I even had an idea for Alimentari Aurora, my desire to connect the dots between all my friends was to create a party that merged eclectic sounds, wine, and the vibe of a Sunday day party. Then the pandemic hit, and that early enthusiasm was shelved. But the vision never disappeared—it just waited for the right outlet.

Now, with Alimentari Aurora nearing its 5-year anniversary, and after countless beautiful Aurora sessions with Fault Radio (who now shares a roof with us at Studio Aurora), it feels like the perfect moment to bring that vision to life.

Deep Barrels is an online mix series featuring old and new friends from around the world who can’t physically play at Studio Aurora, whose sound, spirit, and sensibility fit right in. To launch the series, I reached out to someone I first connected with years ago via Instagram, only to find out we shared a constellation of mutual friends. One of those rare friendships that feels instantly real.

Meet Enrica Borsatto aka Sandra Mason: 

Venetian-born digger now based in Rome, Enrica's sets weave deep psychedelia and offbeat melodies into rich, transportive experiences. I first came across her selections through friends Ani Phoebe and the duo Frinda di Lanco/Henna Stein. Enrica runs the “Cocktail Naïf” YouTube channel, a hidden gem of obscure and forgotten music, and she’s also the mind behind "Horny Music for Ambient People" (with Marco Caizzi) and contributor to the trippy “Yoga & Droga” series with LKSMN (Pietro Rianna)—both on the ever-eclectic Radio Raheem (Milan). She is also half of the ambient duo Fondazione, formed together with author Francesco Pacifico. Her selections move fluidly between clubs and independent spaces, with regular appearances at Fanfulla, Magick Bar, and across Rome’s underground circuit.

I asked Enrica to open the Deep Barrels series, and she sent a 3-hour live B2B with Marco Ragni—recorded in Italy last January.

Marco Ragni is an Italian DJ and producer with deep roots in the scene: a longtime resident at Serendipity Club, for several years part of the duo Plants Army Revolver and now active as one half of the Absira project with Spanish artist ABSIS. His sound blends ambient, downtempo, tribal, bass, and techno through a lens of psychedelic rhythms and hypnotic textures. His path has also included running the now-closed record store Mondo Musique in Foligno, contributing to Berlin’s Melantónia Collective, and being one of the minds behind Sintesi Festival.

This is the most brainiac and soulful mix I could have hoped for—an ideal opening statement for the Deep Barrels spirit.

An Italian deep cut for Deep Barrels #2, Andrea Passenger: dear friend, OG "Boogie Nights" resident and Jazz:Re:Found co-conspirator, and a passionate lover of all shades of black music and intense grooves.

He’s the founder and manager of Dora Exp and Icon Of Desire record labels and has played alongside luminaries such as Nicky Siano, Theo Parrish, Gilles Peterson, stomping respected underground nights like Backwards in Ireland or Corsica Studios in London and The Room in Tokyo.

We recently saw each other at Piedicavallo Festival in Italy and I instantly asked him to join the Deep Barrels series. Of course, he delivered a puntastic mix blending boogie, acid chuggers, electronica and more; a true reflection of the crate digger he is.

ANDREA PASSENGER
Turin, Italy

One of Italy’s best kept secrets, Andrea Passenger is a passionate lover of all shades of black music, with an uncommon sensitivity for particular and intense grooves. 
His style and taste brought him to play alongside luminaries such as Nicky Siano, Theo Parrish, Gilles Peterson and to rock floors in Japan, Germany, Spain, Netherland, UK, Portugal, Denmark, from respected underground nights like Backwards in Ireland to high-revered spots like Corsica Studios in London and The Room in Tokyo. He’s also playing in duo with trombone extraordinaire Gianluca Petrella. 

He represents Jazz:Re:Found Festival sound as resident DJ, after being the resident of the 'Boogie Nights' parties that paved the way to the well-known Italian boutique festival. He also runs his own club night ‘Aquario’ and the ‘Better Days’ events dedicated to explore the intersections between clubbing and community building.

He’s founder and manager of Dora Exp and Icon Of Desire record labels. His productions are released on several labels around Europe and US and his dj friendly edits and reworks on Light Touches Records, Right Tempo, Just What The World Needs, are favorites of DJ’s DJs like Mark Grusane, Coco Maria, Red Greg, Cami Layé Okun and Darryn Jones.

Despite the irresistible dancefloor call, his selections are in demand on radio stations of the likes of Soho Radio, Rinse FM and Universal Rhythms UK, and online formats such as 180gr, where he can express the full range of his favorite sounds and styles.

Born in Tokyo, DJ KENSEI (@dj_kensei) is a DJ, producer and beat-maker. Based on hip hop from the middle of 80’s to the present as a starting point, he has been doing DJ, sound control and music selection with various point of view at all time. He also releases plenty of CLASSIC works and official DJ mixes from many of music labels both in domestic and abroad. He actively collaborates with musicians in live performance and also releases a lot of tracks with uniqueness and full of originality which is created by musician’s live performance and DJ’s playing.

A primary figure in Canadian dance music, Overland (@jodieoverland) is a force to be reckoned with. Her lengthy DJ experience mean her sets are always a surprise, brimming with a wealth of knowledge in acid, industrial and Detroit techno. Her recent venture into production has been fruitful, with releases on labels such as Naive, run by Portuguese powerhouse Violet, as well as Helpful Music, curated by How To Dress Well. Though small in stature, her sound is powerful, using classic rave era synths to create cutting-edge dance floor hits. These feats are just the beginning of what’s to come for this bright young Canadian.
