Ritual Lines

Live recording of a collective performance on December 12th, 2017 at bb15 (Linz, Austria). This performance was part of a workshop at bb15 where participants built an Arduino-based synthesizer. During the two-day workshop participants designed, soldered and programmed a sound-device, after which we collectively came up with a semi-structured, improvised performance.

CWP (Collective Workshop Performance)

Recording of a live performance of 'Arched', a composition that I developed during a two week Artist in Residence at bb15 (Linz, Austria). The score of 'Arched' was drawn on the arches of the space in which it was performed (as can be seen in the image). The instruments used to perform this piece are custom built. Arched

The sound installation refers to a popular party phenomenon in ski resorts entitled après ski. A meaningless music at 120 bpm, twirling rave trumpets, ski boots, lots of alcohol and frisky DJ’s are the ingredients for this post skiing celebration. The recorded announcements and animations of an après ski DJ in Flachau (a popular ski resort in Austria) were used for the Après Après sound installation. Shouting and cheering such as “put your hands up in the air”, “zike zake zike zake“, “louder“, and so forth are the basic elements of the sound collages.
Installed under a motorway bridge the atmosphere clearly contrasts the party mood of après ski events. In such divergent situation the animations turn into something absurd. Who is this man cheering for? Himself, the employees of the ski resort, the tourists? A call and response animation that animates itself as far as it will go.

The piece is finished once all the ropes have been stored.

I made multiple recordings of this performance event every Sunday afternoon between swimming training and water polo, each with its own unique style. Then one week the same procedure of winding up the lanes was carried out but with no sonic accompaniment – someone had oiled the storage reel.

Since 2004, Clemens Mairhofer, Lucas Norer and Sebastian Six work together in the artist collective FAXEN.

Acoustic experiments in connection with items of everyday life, sculptural assemblages and the physical element of sound are the main aspects of the group’s musical and visual compositions. The works of the artist group FAXEN deal with moments where noise becomes music and the difference between hearing and active listening is explored.
