As an introduction to our exploration of British reggae, we explore the foundational sub-genre of lovers rock, with three guests who have intimate knowledge of the sound and its political resonance.

Sandra Cross, Dr Denise Noble, and Dr Lisa Palmer discuss the gendered and "erotic politics" of the genre, and the spaces in which the music was played - at a time in Britain when young Black men and women were forming a distinct cultural identity.

This episode is a tribute to the Ranking Miss P (Margaret Anderson), who was one of the first female Black DJs in UK Pirate radio who inspired many women and was a huge influence to reggae's development in Britain. After the pirate radio days, Miss P went on to work closely with the BBC over the years, as a radio host, and as collaborator on documentaries.

A sound installation composed by artist Micaela O'Herlihy in 2007 for an exhibit at Paper Boat Gallery in Milwaukee, WI titled "The New Witch"
For the exhibit O'Herlihy sifted through 60 films featuring witches and pulled the audio then collaged them together into this 11:35 minute sound piece.
