As a congregation, we take God's command in Leviticus 23:2-3 seriously and begin the Shabbat, as do many in the Jewish community, with a Friday evening or Erev Shabbat service. We begin with worship at 7:30, followed by teaching on a part of the Torah portion for the week. (The first five books of the Holy Scriptures–Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy–are known as the Torah. These scriptures are divided into 52 weekly “portions” beginning with Genesis 1:1 and ending with Deuteronomy 34:12; one being read each week for a year.)
