Ectomorph occupy a unique and strange place within Detroit Techno history. Founded in 1994 as an inspired reaction to DBX, Basic Channel, Rob Hood, Sähkö, and Drexciya, they released their first 12" singles in 1995 as an attempt to make Detroit music for Detroit itself, rather than exclusively for export.

The mystique of their early singles led to mythic status and a strong underground cult following, which they have continued to develop through releases on their own Interdimensional Transmissions label. Their live shows are legendary for their ability to fluidly incorporate improvisational techniques into synthesized music (and for the sheer amount of hardware that they bring to the stage). The Ectomorph show is all analog, no computers or samplers or even drum machines: all sounds come from the modulars and the mountains of Moogs.

Ectomorph (now officially comprised of BMG & Erika) reconvened in 2016 to write new music, which led to a series of live shows where the new material was tested via performance and allowed to evolve in form. To capture the energy of these performances, the new material was recorded in the studio totally live, multitracked for further engineering, but with no editing whatsoever. This music, to borrow a phrase from Derrick May, is what it is. The entire album was recorded live in one or two takes in the Interdimensional Laboratories in Detroit. This is the sound of the idea that is Ectomorph, presented in its natural and organic format, live and improvisational.

Interdimensional Transmissions (or IT) is a Detroit-based label founded by BMG (Brendan M Gillen) in 1995, with its first release the debut record by Ectomorph. The label has come to represent the left-hand path within Detroit Techno, Electro, post-disco, etc. IT often takes a wide musical lens and incorporates history as a way to find something both pure and new. IT is collaborative in nature, and functions as a dialogue between label partners BMG, Erika, & Amber. IT parties have also gained a cult status internationally, with their recurring No Way Back events becoming the focal point of a sort of post-rave cultural phenomenon and the annual after party highlight of Detroit's Memorial Day weekend.

FUSE09 - Matti Turunen (Morphology)

The 9th edition of our FUSE series comes courtesy of Matti Turunen, one half of Finnish Electro legends; Morphology. Separated from his partner in crime Michael Diekmann through lockdown, Matti took himself away from his collection of adored synthesisers and drum machines to produce this rare, vinyl only DJ set, recorded exclusively for our FUSE series. The mix consists of some absolute gems in Matti’s collection, with styles ranging from early Chicago and Detroit to sublime, futuristic electronics, some of which come from other respected, underground Finnish labels and artists. 

Devoted to Electro, Morphology have been at large for more than a decade and have made their presence known with releases on labels widely considered by those in the scene as having royal stature, such as Central Processing Unit, Cultivated Electronics, Solar One Music, FireScope, Semantica and more. Being fans of theirs for many years it was an honour for us to bring them to London to play an unforgettable live set at our 16 hour extended rave at FOLD in August 2019. This party has gone down in our history as being one of our most memorable to date and the pair slotted into the lineup perfectly, alongside Regis, Kamikaze Space Programme, DJ Skull, DJ T-1000 aka Alan Oldham, Versalife, as well as front-line Natural Selection and FOLD residents; Kodah, Annie Hall, Voicedrone, Gareth Wild, Cressida and more.

The floodlights remain unshakeably fixed on the Finnish pair’s brilliance moving into this new decade. Their next EP “Qualia” comes courtesy of Exalt Records and will be released in July 2020.

Barcelona based Carlos Sicrock, known to some simply as "Pasta" or "Carlitos", is a perfect example of how the Spanish and Catalonian cultures seem to produce such passionate Electro producers. Perhaps you could say it's a bit of a balance between having been right in the middle of the expansion of the sound through the 80's and 90's as many of the old school and new school artists of international fame have visited the region, not to mention the sound has always had its share of popularity with its people. But also that in some ways they have also been "cut off" from the true epicenters of this music, making them perfect spectators of the sound and culture.

With New York, Los Angeles, Miami and London being hotbeds for this sound and where the majority of the pioneers originated from, to some degree it could be said that aspiring artists and lovers of the sound in Spain and Catalonia couldn't help but observe in amazement as Electro grew to become such a global phenomenon, going on to influence music in general in so many ways, and giving them in particular a sense of curiosity and appreciation for the music that is evident in the productions to come from the region year after year.

Carlos remembers growing up in a large family that was very musically diverse, offering a broad enough palette of listening that everything from the sounds of James Brown to Pink Floyd, passing through Supertramp and Heavy Metal bands like Judas Priest would give him a very open mind to many styles of music. But none would impact him as much as the emerging sounds of Electro. He recalls, saying that: "I started listening to Electro, and from the first moment I was totally hooked. I remember the first time I heard Cybotron, specifically the "Clear" theme, [also] Hashim, Warp 9, Man Parrish, The Jonzun Crew, and Afrika Bambaataa".

He goes on to explain of a time when Afrika Bambaataa came to play at the Amnesia club in Sant Feliu de Llobregat, Catalonia, and getting a chance to breakdance for him. "When they closed the album, you could break dance for them while they collected the synths and other stuff, they freaked out but I did much more. To think of all the times I had danced to the theme Looking For The Perfect Beat, Planet rock, etc., and now they were the ones congratulating me. It was something of an eternal emotion".

Since then, Carlos Sicrock continues to gain momentum as a devoted Electro artist with a keen sense of how deep this sound can go, and why it's worth every bit of blood, sweat and tears to keep digging.

For now, check out his discography and support this fantastic Catalonian artist! You won't be disappointed. The tunes you will find will bewilder you, and challenge you emotionally and mentally.

Although his habitat is the other side of the ocean and his time is more than the 80s and 90s of Detroit and Chicago, for this occasion he has compiled some of his darkest albums, combining the sound of the new oven in Detroit and the UK with old Martians from the old school, and some songs by the best electro producers in the capital, Ideograma (DJ F) and Zenobit3, two DJs who have influenced him, especially in the discovery of this style. Flavio teaching him that sound on those afternoons at the Recycled Music Center and Zenobit3 at the Red Sonja Beats, at Sirocco. Don't get used to seeing this version of I-94, just enjoy it like there's no tomorrow! Peace!
