This week, I was caught in the city without an internet connection and all I had downloaded on my phone were some very old episodes of The Guestlist. As embarrassing as they were to hear, the music was certified flames. So I figured this week, we’d a have a little trip down memory lane to play some lesser known greats from the early days of The Guestlist, peppered with a few newer bits that are representative of where we’ve come.

Also… there is some Fear of Tigers news today. It’s a tease of a tease of a tease… but, yes there is new music coming, a new album, an accompanying audio diary and more. I talk about it in today’s episode if you’re interested to hear more. Otherwise, hold tight, all will be revealed in the coming days.

Hello Fear of Tigers family,

This is the trailer for the forthcoming Fear of Tigers album, podcast, personal memoir and photo diary “Lo-Fi Belgrade”.

Over the next two months I’ll be releasing a new piece of music every week, alongside a podcast, interviews, found sound and set of images, detailing my journey across Belgrade and wider Serbia.

Lo-Fi Belgrade is the soundtrack to the city I fell in love with and a personal story about a hopeless romantic who found himself alone here.

During the course of this series I’ll walk you through the sounds and sights of the city - you'll hear conversations with some of the people I've met, my jump into the culture and even a little of the language and history.

Let me bear my soul to you... This is going to be my most personal project yet. It’s an album for me, an album for you and a love letter to the city I love. I’ll tell you something of my personal story of how I ended up alone here and I’ll delve in the rich world of 80s music from the Ex-Yu (ex Yugoslavia).

I’ve said it before. This is my most personal project yet. The gloves are off and is no more holding back. Take my hand, join me and I will show you everything.

Some notes on this trailer, the music is not original, it’s a shallow dive into ex-yu 80s gems and the track list is below. I’ll be taking my inspiration from some of these tracks and I will introduce you to many more of these hidden classics along the way. You'll also hear me use the word "ex-yu" along the way, it's a reference to former countries of Yugoslavia - Serbia, Kosovo, Croatia, Slovenia, Macedonia, Bosnia Herzegovina and Montenegro.

Italian For Beginners

I’m Benjamin, a Japanese born, UK based writer, composer and musical director. I’ve written and produced music for movies including The Shallows with Blake Lively and TV shows such as The View. I’ve created and choreographed pieces for Germany’s Next Top Model with Heidi Klum and created original compositions for brands such as Victoria’s Secret, and Avon with Yasmin Le Bon. Elsewhere my compositions and productions have been featured on a number of TV shows such as Love Island USA and movies including Rough Night with Scarlett Johansson. 

As a producer and remixer I’ve worked with and for artists such as Max Richter, Ellie Goulding, LeAnn Rimes and Kylie Minogue. In a previous life I was a DJ and music journalist, spending five years as the Managing Editor of Yahoo! Music UK, creating original content with artists including Calvin Harris and Lily Allen.

As a Musical Director I’ve recently completed a forthcoming movie called Corazon City, set in the city of San Antonio, Texas, working with a diverse range of musicians and creators from the electronic, Latino and urban community.

Outside of music I’m a former fellow of the Museum fur Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg where I built prototypes and concepts for exhibitions and installations. I’ve also worked in the third sector on a range of issues including social mobility, the gender gap and BAME representation. I studied at The University of Westminster in London, completing a Masters Degree in Music Business Management.

I love the push and pull of collaboration and seeing a creative work take shape. My approach is based around listening to my co-creators and giving them space so the work can develop spontaneously. I love the unexpected, unplanned turns a work can take, nurturing it as it gains a momentum and energy of its own. In the words of the playwright Alan Bennett: 

“You don’t put yourself into what you write, you find yourself there.”
