Tonight on Audio Forage, we’re joined by Katharine, a DJ, label co-founder, and long-time champion of underground minimal and sideways house. Since 2000, she’s been shaping dancefloors across Australia with lush, intricate vinyl journeys and an unmistakable groove, weaving mysterious pieces with raw street sounds and twisted funk.

A long-time resident at Naarm/Melbourne’s FiftyFive Bar and Killing Time, she’s also the co-founder of Motion:Theory:Music with Ben Abrahams, and Selekt Sessions; a freshly launched global minimal series with Rupert Wall, showcasing some of the world’s most interesting minimal pioneers.

For her debut on our show, Katharine’s brought us something special. This is a one-hour session recorded for a party by her friend Blana. Older, sick minimal with a straight power vibe, threaded with pieces she loves. She’s been saving it for just the right home, and tonight, that home is here.

On this episode we invited Katharine Abrahams from Motion:Theory (@katharine-motiontheory), sublime sounds and hypnotic funk stimulate her being, compelling her to source, mix and access dimensions too many to mention. A natural curator, the journey is micro, psychedelic, soul-stirring and funky; perfect for vibration appreciation in the dance floor sweet spot.

Flipping records and dancing by the side of dj Ben Abrahams for 18 years, their marriage is firmly rooted between decks and dance floor. Their child Eli has lived 6 years of immersion in the most delectable sound waves. They featured on dancefloors back in 2000, as Ben rocked forests and the infamous Melbourne nightclub Onesixone as the Earthcore resident, until a series of adventures found them inhabiting a church in the Byron Bay hills. Children, animals and wild folk were drawn to their all ages acid-house parties at the local Billinudgel Barn, an ecstatic hoe-down to luscious vinyl amidst the surreal Australian bush. Katharine and Ben played records at the early Splendour in the Grass Festivals before moving to Rainbow Bay, to create the freshest experience on the Gold Coast at the infamous Elsewhere Bar.

Katharine danced to Ben's legendary sets, which consistently went off every Saturday for Motion:Theory:Music, from Elsewhere's conception, for 7 years. Dhe played an early set of warm psychedelic house before Ben, and then moved between heaving dance floor and turntables for the spectacularly crazy early morning hours. No words can describe that scene either, but it's imprinted in many memories. Elsewhere won  'Best Music for a Club in Australia' at the Sydney Bar Music Awards at this time.

They are now in Melbourne, where she has dj'd for Killing Time Bar, Black Market, Quality Project, Faceless, Doesnt Matter, Revolver's Mama Said and Mi Casa. Katharine closed the Garden Stage for A Collective Future in the bush, and had everyone vibrating, elevating and connecting. She has created podcasts for Mesa Recordings from Santa Fe, Art-E from Romania podcast and next, she and Ben create for Bonjour Minimal.

Blurring the line between house and techno, their Motion:Theory parties are renowned for involving others who See:With:Their:Ears. Katharine's selections are unique, and mixing style smooth and bass driven. She will twist you new ways with her flow of astral:house. Not one to hold back, whether djing alone or with Ben, she connects the space with energy designed to spiral you up and out.

Mint4000 - At a certain point it all started to move by itself

Set description: Well... like all my mixes the selection of this mix build by itself or out of the situation (pick&play). So, all in all, it is a pure and honest mix without any pre-selection and or reproduction, like a live afterhours or club mix.

As a medium I use vinyl cause for me it‘s the weapon of choice since I started collecting and play music. I learned to feel comfy with all the advantages and disadvantages, and I‘m really into the specific sound experience (frequencies).
This mix features temporary and contemporary music releases. As a collector I try to buy/select timeless music, music I could play now and even in a few years. Music that moves myself.

Jon Borno - Antiviral [vinyl]

Set description: Starting off with a very subtle breakbeat style track, the set evolves into a spaced-out, spherical journey through the landscape of minimalistic Romanian house music. In the time before the set was recorded, I visited some local record stores in Germany, digging through a lot of very interesting music. After visiting Prague for a week, I came back with lots of new records in my bag and new ideas and experiences in my head. The last place I've visited was GRAM Records in Prague - the drawing by my lovely girlfriend shows the inside of this beautiful place. Listening to my podcast "Romania" on the way home, I decided to record a ro-minimal podcast again. I hope you enjoy the story and the music showcased in this podcast!

About yourself: "Hey, my name is Tobias and I am living in Hannover, which is in the northern part of Germany. When I am not hosting parties, working at festivals or DJ in the local club scene, I try to finish my PhD in mechanical engineering... As the artist Jon Borno, I mainly play a variety of minimalistic, deep and spherical house music, but also use to play some beats and old-school hip hop, as well as minimal techno – from time to time I also dig into old-school house music and funky stuff. The music scene evolving around minimalistic music isn't too big in Hannover, but I always try to find those parties and locations where people really enjoy those minimal journeys. Since I am working on my computer most of the time, I love to play on a physical format. Since I started spinning electronic music, I have collected more than 1200 records and always keep digging for new, interesting and unexpected music and also artists. Building up my sets I always look for a story to tell to the audience, while using subtle transitions and smooth changes of vibe."

Discrete - OverCurrent Mix

Set description: An affinity for the commingling and contrasting sounds and playful experimentation inspired the birth of Savvy Records, a platform Kyle created to fill a distinct niche for the music he loves. Since the label's conception in 2010, it has released singles and albums from such notable artists as Bram Faber, Frankie, René van Munster, S.O.S., Thomas Gwosdz, Thore Pfeiffer, Xavier León, as well as his own productions. His label also hosts the Savvy Records Podcast, an inclusive resource for discovering new and dynamic music for newcomers and more advanced electronica listeners alike.

Following a strong library of solo releases, 'The Midas Touch' is Kyle's first full-length solo album. Kyle Intertwined his love for jazz, disco and soul with a deep-house and techno tinged sensibility. This medley of inspirations was crucial to constructing a sound that is not only exuberant and enigmatic, but also nostalgic and thoughtful. Artist biography: Kyle Yip—also known as Discrete—is an award-winning, internationally recognized, critically acclaimed fine artist based in Toronto. He is known not only for his Juno Award Nominated debut album for best 'Electronic Album of the Year’ from the 45th Annual Juno Awards, but also his international exhibitions in New York, Vancouver and South Korea, features in Exclaim! and IGGY Magazine, host of Metaphysical on Data Transmission Radio, and nominations at the Austin Music Video Festival and the Kinsale Shark Awards International Festival of Creativity for Best Cinematography alongside artists such as Prince and The Chemical Brothers.

Artist biography: Despite the fact that she based in Russia, most of the events with her participation take place abroad.
As a record selector, she has been carefully collecting her vinyl collection for several years, where you can find such labels as: Sleep is commercial, Nervmusic, All Inn Black, Perlon, Amam, etc., releases of which she is willing to share in clubs, on podcast channels and online broadcasts, such as RTS.FM, FM4 and Feeder.ro
An open mind and an independent view allow her to accurately select a compilation for the audience of the country club or podcast where she will perform.
Her musical style in Berlin was jocular called "gangsta style" for a reference to hip-hop in part of the broken sound in her sets, in the stylistic range between breakbeat of the 90s, Romanian hypnotic vibe, micro and minimal house, compositions with an implicit confusing rhythm from friends-producers from Eastern Europe.

Set description: I curated this session specifically for Feeder, using cdjs and turntables, and focusing inward. What resulted is an organic taste of Artro, starting off with crunchy textures, sitar and profound vocals setting the stage for a psychedelic, meditative yet dancy set. With dissonant sounds, tribal hints and a constant flow of groovy baselines and pronounced kicks, it’s sure to make you move.

About Artro
Artist biography: Born in San José, Costa Rica. Artro has been involved in sound for almost 20 years now. As a drummer, Djing and producing his own sounds  and field recordings for different purposes, Artro has been dedicating his time and energy to different forms of art. Based in Costa Rica he works in his studio named Trial Und Error and travels around the globe with different approaches to sound that go from Ambient, breaks, micro, minimal, house, Electro, dub, techno, acid, IDM to name some examples. He's been releasing music since 2012 and is part of Half Seas Over family in San José, Costa Rica.

Artro has different variations to sound when curating events, it depends on the concept, whom he plays with, the people and the place. His music is a passage through different emotions and experiences from every now and then. It has textures full of life and patterns that connect everything, organicity and constant elements that feel as currents of rhythm. All this treated with a fine selection of hand picked records and digital released and unreleased music from friends and himself. Artro has also been experimenting with a live audiovisual performance. Music and his vibe has taken him to cure events, festivals, radio and more in places like Nicaragua, Honduras, Beijing, New York, Panamá, Chengdu, Qingdaoh, Honduras, El Salvador, Houston and all around Costa Rica to name some places.
