The Tail End of The Trip Pt.1 (Ambient/Chilled Electronica)

There was a time in the late 90s before garage was big and before genres were so limited by what bpm they were when there was this thing that happened called 'Big Beat'. A game called Wipeout2097 became a showcase for some of the best of this music, and was the first game to be directly marketed to pillheads coming back from raves and wanting to play games.

This mix isn't only songs from that soundtrack, but also many songs which were adjacent or from acts I was listening to at the time from bands such as The Prodigy, Leftfield, Fluke, Future Sound of London and Squarepusher.

Boutique Big Beat: Crunchy 90s Electronica Mix (Wipeout 2097 inspired)

Okay so this mix is predominantly soul, funk and hip-hop with some added cinematic extras. It's arranged with a sense of sadness as I watch summer fading without really starting. It's kind of introspective and gritty feeling, but with occasional bursts of jubilance and attitude popping through. 

This, in many ways, is synonymous with the domestic political situation in urban America in 1971, with a promising civil rights and freedom movement ultimately ending in wet and muggy disappointment. 

I wanted to make a straightforward party funk mix but I remember how much tone/mood difference there is with funk/soul music. It's not just about mixing bpm and key, there's the entire song feel and vibe to consider, which makes it much more interesting that most other genres as far as mixing goes. I was feeling something much more melancholic and cosy.

Anyway enjoy this, there might be another one.

Goldfinger Mixtape Ep. 1 (09/24) - There Goes Summer (soul, hip-hop, neo-soul, cinematic)

The 'mixtape' format was meant to be a more freeform 'flow of consciousness' vibe, however this episode the vibe is definitely disco! This is something I've wanted to do for a while now, and hearing the DJ Koze edit of 'Operator' just reminded me of what I like about disco despite being a house tune.
