After migrating to the Gold Coast from Sydney for competitive surfing in 2019, Lara slowly became involved in the local underground music scene. The singer-songwriter had recently released several indie pop tracks under the alias ‘Fond of Felix’, however learning to DJ led her to discover a whole new realm of music. ‘Felix’ became her new musical identity, the three face motif representing her versatility and the fluidity of her sound.

Felix’s sets are never bound by a genre, only by groove and feel. With a knack for reading the room and adapting to her surroundings, her sets are a constant ‘on the fly’ journey. Her selections are rhythm-section-forward, featuring deep and percussive beats layered with lush synths and live instruments. Jazz, world, and tribal influences can be heard throughout her extensive range of genres, from trip hop and acid/nu jazz to electronica, deep house and minimal tech, all the way through to breaks, UKG, and jungle.

Based in Coolangatta, felix has played at a range of venues and events in Byron, Gold Coast and Brisbane like S*A*S*H, The End Bar, Soho Bar, The W, Fiume, Justin Lane, Mexicali, Hidden Cherub, Refuge and Dusty’s. In late 2020, felix and her three friends ola jar, Joey Pepperoni and D’jeans founded ‘ravewave’, an underground music event group which has evolved from organising casual beach and carpark raves to now hosting monthly events in established venues. Felix and ola jar also frequently join forces in their b2b breaks/jungle duo ‘no dogs’.

Felix makes a range of mixes utilising both vinyl and digital formats and is constantly expanding her collections. Producing an EP for release is her next step, and she looks forward to sharing her own personal sound with the world.

For Episode 7, listen back to the last hour of myself and Felix playing b2b for the Outerbound party over the weekend just gone, where I think this part perfectly captures the climax of our opening set warming up right before Baldo.

During the 3.5 hour set, we got a chance to play a really fun and memorable set, where we jumped around to a lot of different styles and tempos, with only a few records left in our bags at the end.

S3E12 sees three mixes from @keepcallingmethat which showcases their favourite bass music from artsits such as Mystic State, Teffa and Innamind Recordings.

The first mix contains some fiddle heavy dub, the second mix is tribal 140 jungle and the last mix is dubstep/ alternative bass 🎻 

I have had the absolute pleasure to invite the extremely talented Felix (aka Lara) on the show whose skill in genre switching from Breaks, Bass and Jungle is comparatively more impressive than her knowledge of Australian slang 🧐

Felix (aka Lara) started her musical journey as a singer-song writer producing Indie Summer Bangers alongside her mum in the band ‘Fond of Felix’ which is available on Spotify (I highly recommend you check them out) ;)

These days you can catch Felix spinning digital and vinyl all around the swanky clubs and pubs of Meanjin laying down funky beats for all to hear.

I was lucky enough to catch her all vinyl support set for Dr Banana at Echo and Bounce which was on par with the headliner. Look forward to a fantastic guest mix, lots of silliness, bongos and of course fingerbuns 💫
