Death in Haiti

Fog Horns (LP Vinyl release on Discrepant)

A windmill in the desert of Arizona is screaming while the wind is coming. Those windmills are used to pump water, in order to give water to cattle or wild animals for hunting. The groaning is produced naturally by the central mast on a piece of wood (part of the windmill).

Recorded during a scouting for an upcoming sound art project in Arizona (to be done in 2022).

Squeaking dock on the lagoon, during the night

Une invitation à parcourir l’Altiplano Potosino, région désertique du Mexique au-dessus de San Luis Potosi, à 400 km au nord de Mexico. Sur ces hauts plateaux à 2000 mètres, le désert est loin d’être vide. On entend les habitants des villages et des hameaux, les bergers avec leurs troupeaux de chèvres ou de moutons. On part à dos d’âne ou en calèche pour aller charruer les champs. Entre cactus et arbustes, des vaches cherchent quelques brins d’herbes. De retour au village, on se retrouve tous à l’église et à la fête locale. Les coyotes chantent en écho au train qui traverse l’immensité de ce “désert” mexicain peuplé de vies et de sons.

RESUME:
Mexico City: more than 20 millions people gathered making noise!
A noisy city for most; I would like to transform it in a sonorous city.

The street sellers make the voices of the polyphonic choir, the small bell from the ice cream seller substitutes the triangle from the orchestra, and the hammering of the protesters on the metallic wall are the percussions.

In Mexico City, people shout to be heard, they shout their rage against the cops, they shout at the ‘lucha libre’ fights, they shout together ¡ Viva Mexico ! to feel united, and during a demonstration they also shout ¡Viva Mexico ! People shout in church, they pray together or alone, whispering in the silent night.

The thunder booms: nobody can shout at the storm, and the rain cleans the silent city.  A solo voice after the rain, and the choir resumes gradually. 

People sing to forget and the shouting starts again, louder, so that the others don´t forget.

The water flows under the city, the forgotten lake is mourning; it remembers when the city was an Island… On the top, it is too noisy, underneath, the water keeps in silence the secrets of the past.

INTENTION
Most of the people in the world live in cities. The daily soundscape is in most of the case a continuous sound of traffic, close or distant. Mexico City has a series of sounds added to the background which make the specificity of the city: the cries and sounds of the street sellers are in most part responsible.
In the past, most cities had their own cries (as some classical music can testify, like ‘Les cris de Paris’ from Janequin). In Mexico City, this tradition has persisted until today,  but the government and general opinion is not in favour of them: street sellers are each time further away from the touristic center, advertising campaigns are done to make them disappear from the subway, and police operations block their access to the streets.

I would like to pay tribute to these Criers through a soundscape of Mexico City, that will become a sonorous memory of a time that sooner than later will disappear.

Tourbillon d’hommes et de poussière, Port-au-Prince ne se tait jamais. De l’aube à l’aube, 2 millions d’habitants, de coqs et de chiens déambulent sur des trottoirs invisibles, livrés à eux-mêmes pour effacer les dernières traces du séisme du 12 janvier 2010. Haïti jouk li jou, "jusqu'à ce qu'il fasse jour".

Une balade sonore au ras du sol, enregistrée en binaural par des chiens d’un quartier récemment urbanisé en bordure de Belo Horizonte, au sud-est du Brésil. Les preneurs de son Marmita, Pretinha, Nina, Bob, Frida et Una ont été équipés d'un micro binaural placé au niveau des oreilles. 
Connus sous le noms de “vira-latas” (retourneurs de poubelle), les chiens des rues du Brésil proposent une écoute de leur monde et de leur cohabitation avec les humains. Quand on est chien, on aime fouiller dans les déchets pour dénicher quelque chose à manger, on aboie quand une moto passe, on court après les voitures qui envahissent notre territoire, on se faufile à l'intérieur des maisons et on explore les terrains abandonnés...

Known as “vira-latas” (dump tippers), stray dogs offer their canine listening abilities in conjunction with human cohabitation. As a dog, you love rummaging through dumpsters, looking for something to eat; you bark when a motorcycle passes by; you run after cars invading your territory; you dash in and out of houses; and you explore abandoned fields. This piece offers a ground level sonic walk, binaurally recorded by dogs in a recent urbanized neighborhood close to Belo Horizonte in Southeast Brazil.

Field-Recording in South of France

1 Hour: Thunder and rain in south of France during summer

On the top of the mountain, the wind is howling in the old installation of the ski station of Chacaltaya, Bolivia. The station was the highest in the world, and stops a few years ago, because of the smelting of the ice (du to global warming). 
The teleski cable and tube is still there and the wind sing in it! :-)

Toads during the night in a pound, in Serrinha do Alambri (Brazil)

Les habitants de Tauary, petit village au coeur de la forêt amazonienne, nous emmènent écouter les sons de leur quotidien tout au long d’une journée. De l'aube en forêt à une balade en pirogue, de l'orage à la nuit, des jeux dans le fleuve à la chasse au crocodile... En constant dialogue avec leur entourage, les habitants imitent les cris des animaux (singes, toucans, aras, colibris...) pour faire entendre leur chant. Cette création est aussi disponible en podcast de 10x3 minutes. 

Nous sommes à Tauary, petit village à 600 km à l’ouest de Manaus, au Brésil. Il faut 14 heures en bateau express, 2,5 jours en bateau 'normal' ou 1 heure d'avion pour atteindre Tefé, la petite ville la plus proche. De là il faut prendre une pirogue à moteur - comptez entre 1h30 et 2h selon la saison et le niveau des eaux - pour remonter le Rio Tefé et arriver ici : https://goo.gl/maps/4UPT3UVz5GwbwmNw5
Une vingtaine de familles vivent là (environ 80 personnes), aucune ne se reconnaissant comme “indigène”. Les habitants sont issus d'un mélange de colons et d'indigènes, installés ici à l’époque de l'exploitation du latex. Il y a une école, un poste de santé avec des médicaments de base, un téléphone public (pas d’autres téléphones, pas de connexion, pas d’internet), un terrain de foot et un de volley. La ressource du village est la plantation de manioc, qui se fait ensuite en farine et se vend en ville. Le village s’auto-régule, et chacun ne peut travailler que 2ha à chaque fois. On ne déforeste donc que le nécessaire malgré toute la forêt qui est là, toute proche.

The inhabitants of Tauary, a little village in the heart of the Amazon, invite us to listen to their everyday sounds for a day. From sunrise at the forest up to a canoe ride, throughout a stormy night, from playing in the river up to a crocodile hunting… In constant dialogue with their surroundings, they imitate animal shouts (monkeys, toucans, macaws, hummingbirds) so we can listen to their singing.

Félix Blume is a sound artist and sound engineer. 
His work is focused on listening, it invites us to live sonic experiences that enable a different perception of the surrounding. He uses sound as a basic material in sound pieces, videos, actions and installations. His process is often collaborative, working with communities, using public space as the context within which he explores and presents his works. He is interested in myths and their contemporary interpretation, in human dialogues both with inhabited natural and urban contexts, in what voices can tell beyond words.
