NOSE JOB 1 — MANFREDAS

This month, we take a dip in the Lake of Sweet Dreams and dance with the animals on the shore as we bring you "Afterglow In The Sky - Chapter One” by King So So.

It is not entirely clear if King So So was born on planet Earth or somewhere in the sky. Some biographies claim that King So So grew up with wolves in the deep forests of Siberia but later in his life studied taxidermy at the University of the Sky.

However, as no biography on his life is regarded as neither accurate nor based on first-hand knowledge, it is not even clear if King So So is actually a man. Some lesbian groups (note: especially in South Africa and Australia), claim that King So So is in actual fact, a woman.

Rumour has it that King So So opened the Disco in the Sky after suffering from a severe bout of depression due to loneliness and intense attacks of melancholy.

Some die-hard fans believe that King So So set himself alight in the Disco in the Sky, after an unfortunate event when a disco ball fell on his favourite flamingo, and instantly killed her. Allegedly the Disco in the Sky remains open, and around the world, fans believe that it is the only path to ultimate enlightenment.

Mike Watt was the founder and bassist of the seminal band The Minutemen. He was also in Firehose and is currently the bassist for Iggy Pop and the Stooges. He has played all over the world with everyone from Eddie Vedder, Dave Grohl, Nels Cline of Wilco and of course Cris and Curt Kirkwood. Intro music is Teenagers by the Meat Puppets, outro music is Down With The Bass by Firehose and the episode was recorded by Craig Parker Adams at Winslow-Court Studios.

3: Mike Watt - Part 1

For EDWIN, the Höga Nord folks have conducted a mix that is folky, global and psychedelic. It features music by the Algerian musician, Ahmed Malek, a collaboration between mythical writer, William S. Burroughs, filmmaker, Gus Van Sant, a tune by the Super Djata Band from Bamako, Mali, some experimental ambient from Japan, tuned in by Haruomi Hosono and Tadanori Yokoo as well as tripping African vibes by the 70's band, El Rego Et Ses Commandos.

A real worldwide voyage that we highly recommend: Happy drifting and try to sing along!

The tracklisting follows its predecessor verbatim, however every track is re-contextualized so wildly that we're left with a beautifully obtuse yet complimentary rendering. The personnel employed vary in style and technique drastically, but such is the ethos of Soft Rocks, and furthermore the ESP Institute. At the end of the day, we implore you to shut up and listen.

Paul Dickow AKA Strategy is a musical polymath with a signature sound derived from his immersion in hardware-based electronic music.  He has spent close to two decades traveling freely through house, techno, rave, noise, ambient, and sounds more difficult to categorize.  Strategy’s sound is inimitable because it is literally built by hand - his hands.  Through all of this sonic journeying, including multiple full length releases, a constant has been his love of reggae and dub, yet somehow a proper dub album has never emerged - until now.  

After two much-loved 7” singles on ZamZam - to say nothing of dubwise excursions on Idle Hands, Shockout, Peak Oil, 100% Silk and more - “Dub Mind Paradigm” is the fulfillment of a clear, simple goal.  "I set out to make a full set of dub tracks good enough to make an album -- something that had always eluded me-- and it worked, finally. A simple exercise in seeing if we could launch the capsule to orbit Planet Reggae and make it home again.”  

Reaching Planet Reggae, the album explores analog caverns of dubwise at all tempos, from the 80s to 140, full of the ghosts of ancient and future technologies, glimmering shards of hope among heaps of folly, ruin and rubble.  Music fans with crates deeper than the contemporary will find shades of Wackies, Firehouse, Unity Sound, Burial Mix and more, but only winks and nods… no one sounds like Strategy, and Strategy sounds like no one.

Killer, bassbin-destroying acid-dub pressure on the first of two 7”s on Joachim Nordwall’s newly formed Dub On Arrival label, this one featuring Andreas Tilliander on a fathoms-deep soundsystem inversion sounding like the trippiest Rhythm & Sound excursion.

On the A-side’s ‘Expect Resistance’, he smudges the contours of a 303 and the vapour trail of dub melodica until they resemble a curdled, lysergic reflection of Jamaican dub proper, highlighting its inherent links to house and techno while keeping it completely heady and deep.

On the flip, ‘Respect Existence’ is even slower, more spacious and plasmic, like one of Rhythm & Sound’s drowsiest, a la ‘Roll Off’, but merged with early Plastikman-esque acid for a trippy, psychedelic session.

Basically, decades of echo chamber experience channelled into a brilliant pair of disintegrated acid dubs = pure fire.
