Colossus is a dark jazz fantasy by mtl funk & jazz powerhouse The Liquor Store. Straight from the most convoluted and obscure corners of the septet’s creative minds, here is a conceptual suite of instrumentals designed to entrance with its ever-evolving colour palette of emotions; relentless, cathartic and deeply reflective. 
What if an album was an open question to the universe? a philosophical essay on the meaning of creation? Or just a dope-a** jazz joints ?

Today’s MIMS premiere comes from South London-based 8-piece band Don't Problem. Enormous brass riffs battle with heavy drums, electric guitars and relentless grooves on 'King Kong'. Lifted from their forthcoming album ‘Liminality', due for release in September 2021.

'King Kong' is the collective's third single after 'Whale' and 'CD's Lament’.  The band tell us, “Often our tunes are written collectively, but the journey with King Kong was a bit different as the core of it was originally written by Sam on trumpet. He wrote this as a tribute to Oberon King, an incredible drummer who he and Seb (baritone Sax) used to play with and sadly passed away at a young age. Sam brought along some of the melodic and harmonic structures and then it evolved in the normal ‘Don’t Problem’ style and direction we like to take. Sam specifically called it “King Kong” because Oberon King was a real force of nature when he was on the drums"

In contrast to 'Whale' which was an expression of pure joy, 'King Kong' explores heavier sounds, with dark catchy riffs and explosive melodies. The band also adds to the brass core using electric guitars and the trumpet solo is transformed with synthesized sounds.

MIMS Guest Mix: DENIS KAZAKOV (St. Petersburg, Russia / Sengiley Records)

To close out the year "en beauté", I’m excited to present a guest mix from the legendary Parisian DJ Chabin. He started his career over 40 years ago, and was one of the first French DJ's who played Fusion Jazz, Jazz funk, Heavy Funk and early Hip Hop. For MIMS he put together a  lovely mix of 1H00 including some Hip Hop Samples, Rare Grooves and track for the Jazz Rock Dancers, which is one of his specialities.

As for myself, as usual I selected my favorite recent Jazz digging including the last José James, un unknown EWF cut recently reissued on Vinyl, an extract of the second album of Aldorande, my favorite french fusion Jazz Band and the last Alex Malheiros from Azymuth featuring his Daughter !
